Genetic diversity of 37 carrot (Daucus carota L. subsp. sativus) accessions of various origin was assessed using microsatellite (SSR) markers. The PCR reactions were carried out using primers flanking tandem repeats and the obtained amplified products were visualised in agarose and polyacrylamide gels. After separation in polyacrylamide the number of identified alleles was almost doubled in comparison to the separation in agarose. Principal component analysis was used to display genetic diversity of the collection. Two main groups were distinguished, first one, a very diverse group of accessions from Continental Asia, and the second one of European and originating from them Japanese cultivars. Moreover, the SSR markers revealed genetic distinctness of accessions described by the same name in the gene bank collection.
