The article refers to some phenomena and processes taking place within the area affected by Gdynia. Change in political conditions in 1989 created a new favorable conditions for the management of land traditionally belonging to the suburban area. Traditional ties between the suburban villagers and their employment markets in the cities became looser. Contemporary transformations of rural areas within the zones affected by cities, including Gdynia, take place within many spheres of life and human activity. They affect the multifunctionality of rural areas. In the villages treated with these processes intensity of building, location of economic enterprises, contacts with urban forms of production and service activities increase. These phenomena contribute to blurring the differences in conditions and lifestyles of urban and suburban areas.

Author presents main innovation indicators in selected agglomerations and regions in Poland and Germany. These figures describe gap between regions and the state of knowledge- based economy. At present, less than 2% of Europe's wealth (GDP) is devoted to research, which compares poorly with 2.5% in the USA and more than 3% in Japan. Our goal is to approach 3% of GDP for research. This is an important part of the so-called "Lisbon strategy", which consists of a Partnership between the European Union and Member States to transform Europe in a vibrant knowledge economy, in order to boost economic growth, create more and better jobs and ensure lasting prosperity in Europe.

Cohesive properties of model powdered formulas for children

In the reported study, analyses were carried out to determine the effect of agglomeration and raw material composition on cohesive properties of model powdered formulas for children. Measurements were carried out in a uniaxial shearing test according to a measuring procedure following Jenike’s theory, at four levels of consolidating stress in the range of 4.6÷17.2 kPa. The examined powdered children formula were determined for the following parameters of plastic flow: cohesion, internal friction angle, resistance to uniaxial compression, maximum consolidating stress and flow index. Characteristics of flowability properties of the examined model powdered formula for children demonstrated various cohesive properties of those materials. The flow function described the model formula powders as poorly cohesive and soft flowing whereas agglomerates produced on their basis as cohesive powders, sparingly flowing.

Living conditions, place of residence and surrounding natural as well as atmospheric environment determine human health status and life expectancy. This article presents the specificity of biothermal conditions as illustrated by the selected cities in Poland, with a particular consideration of unfavourable thermal conditions due to excessively high or low air temperature. The present article is a review. In accordance with the tendencies of climate change, it was found that in the cities in Poland, conditions hazardous to health and life due to excessively high temperature and heat stress as well as very strong heat stress, occur with increasing frequency, particularly in the city centre. Additionally, thermal discomfort which is markedly present in the city centre is aggravated and moved to night-time due to urban heat island. According to numerous studies, the incidence of such situations is less frequent in the coastal zone and in the suburban zones.
