There are presented the results of investigations on the effect of dairy cattle maintenance system on the animal health and welfare. The paper is mainly focused on observations on the effect of cowshed bedding on animals' physiological state. Methodic of investigations was based on observing the cow herd in four farms during eight months. The animal maintenance technologies in these farms were different. Prior to investigations, the breeders were interviewed in respect of technical parameters in the buildings for livestock. The results of investigations proved that maintenance system, type of bedding and technical parameters of the livestock building influenced evaluation of cattle health and potential hazards expressed by injuries.
The topicality. The indicators of life quality are undetermined and unstandardized; the problem of determination of a single quantitative meaning of the quality of life remains unsolved. The aim of the research – to describe modern approaches to determining the quality of life and on their basis to propose a comprehensive theoretical model for the explanation of life quality phenomenon and the role of health in its formation. Methods: analysis and synthesis of scientific literature, documentary data; methods of theoretical research (analysis, synthesis, specification, classification, historical method, comparative analysis, system and structural analysis). The results: It has been proved that the quality of life is closely related to the health of human beings and it includes physical, mental and social being, considering the beliefs, expectations and world outlook. Based on the theoretical analysis and synthesis, it proposes the multicomponent structure of the quality of life, taking into account both positive and negative aspects of life, common to people of different sex, age, and state of health. Domains, sub-domains, indicators, and variables were defined as the main components of the model. Physical Component, Mental Component, Social Activity, Material Component, Development and Identity, Environment were assigned to the components of the highest level. The health-related quality of life was separated as the single part of the model. Conclusions and recommendations for further research. The theoretical model based on the principles of consistency, hierarchy, equality, determinism, unity of internal factors and external conditions was developed.
Background. Proper human behaviour is needed to maintain health. Healthy lifestyle patterns develop specifically during childhood and adolescence, a process which helps shape young people, and one which significantly affects various life choices, including those regarding health. The aim of the study was to evaluate the health-related behaviour of young people, and to determine the hierarchical position of health as a symbol of happiness and its interrelations with related symbols. Differences in the postulated sources of happiness were also determined in patients with favourable and adverse health-related behaviour. Material and methods. The study involved 209 high school students. The age of respondents ranged from 17 to 19 (M = 18, SD = 0.48). The study involved 114 girls (representing 54.5% of the group) and 95 boys (45.4%). The variables were measured using two techniques by Juczynski (2009): the Health Behaviour Inventory (IZZ) and Part I of the Personal Value List (measurement of the symbols of happiness). Results. The respondents indicated that good health is positioned third in the hierarchy of the determinants of happiness, slightly lower than a large circle of friends. The respondents regard a successful family life as being the greatest determinant of happiness. Higher ratings for health in the hierarchy of the symbols of personal happiness were associated with more favourable adopted health-related behaviour. Similarly, people with favourable healthrelated behaviour are more likely to choose health as the source of a positive life than those with adverse behaviour. Conclusions. The high position of health in the scope of a happy life is a positive factor in the health-related behaviour of young people.
The objective of this research was to determine the relationship between the time when an infant’s first incisor teething occurred, the infant’s state of health and selected environmental and living conditions. 483 infants participated in this research and their health development was monitored monthly in a local hospital in Wroclaw. The teething of the infants was studied from the time of their birth until the age of 18 months. The descriptions of the infants’ living and environmental conditions and their developmental stages were analysed on the basis of 10 standardised characteristics. The results of this study showed that there were strong relationships between the teething of infants’ incisors, their living conditions and individual progress in health development.
The present study was performed for the period of one year from June 2012 to May 2013 in order to understand the physico-chemical properties of sediments samples collected along the Mahim Creek of Mumbai. The annual average pH value of the creek sediments was recorded as 9.22. It is feared that such conditions may increase the alkalinity of Creek water which according to USEPA will increase the physiological stress of many aquatic species resulting in decreased reproduction, decreased growth, disease, or death thereby reducing the biological diversity of the Creek. The total organic matter in the creek sediments was found to be maximum of 10.30 % with an annual average concentration of 6.29 %. Although organic matter is a primary source of food for benthic organisms and is important in maintaining a viable ecosystem, too much of organic matter deposited in the sediments will be responsible for depletion in dissolved oxygen content of the creek water causing unpleasant odours and may also increase the rate of eutrophication. From the results it appears that as India moves towards stricter regulation of industrial effluents to control water pollution, greater efforts are required to control the discharge of pollutants into the ecosystems.
