Diseases caused by the complex of viruses BaYMV/BaMMV widespread Western Europe have recently become a threat in Poland. There are 17 mapped rym genes resistant to the complex of these viruses. Distribution of rym genes in barley genome allows a deliberate accumulation of these genes in new barley cultivars. The purpose of the study was to determine allelic variation in loci Hv-eIF4E and Rym11 in breeding lines and cultivars of barley for efficient design of breeding program. Screening of 748 genotypes used by Polish breeding companies revealed that economically important gene rym5 is not present in the initial cross components, and 36% of studied genotypes were homozygous for rym4 gene. Frequency of genotypes with allelic composition of reference line ‘Russia’ (rym11) was equal to 16%. Allelic pattern suggesting the presence of rym11 gene was present in the cultivars Bartosz, Carola, Rosita and in the line L02611/1. Simultaneous introduction into modern cultivars of effective combination of resistance genes i.e. selected alleles rym4/rym5 with rym1/rym11 may provide a long-term protection from dynamically changing population of viruses.
