Antimicrobial peptides occupy a prominent place in the production of pharmaceuticals, because of their effective contribution to the protection of the immune system against almost all types of pathogens. These peptides are thoroughly studied by computational methods designed to shed light on their main functions. In this paper, we propose a computational approach, named the Polarity Profile method that represents an improvement to the former Polarity Index method. The Polarity Profile method is very effective in detecting the subgroup of antibacterial peptides called selective cationic amphipathic antibacterial peptides (SCAAP) that show high toxicity towards bacterial membranes and exhibit almost zero toxicity towards mammalian cells. Our study was restricted to the peptides listed in the antimicrobial peptides database (APD2) of December 19, 2012. Performance of the Polarity Profile method is demonstrated through a comparison to the former Polarity Index method by using the same sets of peptides. The efficiency of the Polarity Profile method exceeds 85% taking into account the false positive and/or false negative peptides.
Some surfactants widely used as additives in food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetic formulations are susceptible to peroxidation resulting in accumulation of hydroperoxides (HP). Our investigation was aimed to study the possible influence of different surfactants on the proportionality and reproducibility of the ferrous oxidation-xylenol orange method developed originally for the determination of hydroperoxides. We also attempted to apply this method to determine hydroperoxides produced radiolytically in surfactant molecules. From our preliminary studies we conclude that the method can be applied for determination of hydroperoxides in systems containing non-ionic or anionic surfactants provided careful calibration is performed for each surfactant.
Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) is one of basic steps in life cycle assessment methodology (LCA). This paper presents the application of approach LCA for the rejections of drugs company SAIDAL, in order to determine the environmental impacts relative to this industrial activity, since it is classified among industry leader in the pharmaceutical field in Algeria, and that it takes part largely in the environmental disturbance by generating various categories of impacts. For this purpose, an eco-balance was establish by the collection of the theoretical data to the meadows of the company and of the practical data, resulting from the assay of pharmaceutical liquid.
The aim of the study was to assess addictions among students in the years 2000-2003. One hundred and thirty students were recruited for questionnaire investigations in the year 2000, 128 and 121 participated in the subsequent years. The age range was 19-23 years. In the study period, a slight increase was observed in the percentage of cigarette smoking among male and female students. Alcohol consumption showed a slightly growing tendency in women. A rise was found in the percentage of both men and women drinking tea and of men drinking coffee. The students involved in the study were neither psychoactive drug- nor pharmaceutic-addicts.
