The article presents a case of pituitary adenocarcinoma in a twelve-year old female European cat. This tumor derived from secretary cells of the distalis region of the pituitary gland. Large multiple neoplasm cells were divided by a band of connective tissue. Neoplasm-areas of typical solidum constitution were also observed. Neoplastic cells have various shapes and sizes, pycnotic, round and oval nucleus with one or two peripheral located nucleoli and have dispersed, granular cytoplasm staining with eosin. The neoplasm was characterized by a high mitotic activity and multiple mitotic figures. The pituitary adenocarcinoma spread to intra-cerebella metastases.
The probable role of stem cells has been presented in the development of tumors. It has been stressed that in contrast to immature, capable of proliferation and undifferentiated cells, the mature cells are unable to yield a neoplastic clone. The existence of cell clones or subclones determines the extent of differentiation in tumor cells and, thus, results in the heterogeneity of the tumor. Biological activity of such tumors involves production of several substances which negatively affect the organism of the host.
Discoloration of the feline iris belongs to the group of anomalies of various etiologies. In diagnosis, nevus pigmentosus, hyperpigmentation, heterochromia iridis and neoplasms have to be considered. Uveal neoplasms include diffuse iris melanoma (DIM) and primary iris and ciliary body melanoma as solid tumors. The paper presents a case of an 11-year-old male Persian cat with histologically diagnosed iris and ciliary body epithelial melanoma. The treatment of choice was enucleation. The morphologically and histologically described melanoma comprised characteristics of both uveal melanoma. The tumor consisted of anaplastic, round, hypopigmented cells with pleomorphic nuclei and prominent nucleoli and balloon-cells with hollow-spheres surrounding nuclei. No spindle-like melanocytes typical for eye primary melanoma were observed. The tumor caused a narrowing filtration angle and secondary glaucoma as well as wide choroid infiltration towards optic nerve papilla and retinal detachment. In the described case no metastasis or local recidivation was discerned.
About 29 000 horses at the age of 1—25 years of a body weight from 200 to 800 kg were slaughtered under veterinary inspection at 1990. Pre- and postslaughter examinations showed clinical signs and pathological lesions in 4627 (16.0%) horses. Among others were found natural death, slaughter at agony, partial bleeding, emaciation, purification, purulent foci, hyperemia, neoplastic lesions, abnormal odor, parasites. Neoplasms were found in 133 (0.45%) horses; predominated melanosarcoma, accidentally fibromas were found. As unfit were classified 683 (2.36%) horses.
