The gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis of essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation from the flower of Taraxacum officinale L. revealed the presence of 25 compounds with 1,3-dimethylbenzene, 1,2-dimethylbenzene, 1-ethyl-3-methylbenzene, heneicosane and tricosane as the main components.
Silverthiosulphate which is a potent inhibitor of ethylene action was found to be ineffective in delaying senescence of detached flowers of Iris germanica whereas cycloheximide, a protein synthesis inhibitor, effectively delayed the senescence of these flowers and extended the longevity to 6 days. However, this treatment resulted in suppression of bud opening. When cycloheximide treatment was given at progressive intervals it became less effective in inhibiting bud opening and delaying senescence. Cycloheximide treatment maintained a higher protein content in the perianth tissue of flowers compared to untreated flowers.
In 2008–2010, in the field experiment, the yield and quality of lavender flowers in organic cultivation were tested. The experiment was established in four different locations in Poland. The following features were evaluated: fresh and dried flower yields, seed yield, weight of 1 000 kernels, essential oil content and its composition and microbiological contamination. Lavender flower yield from organic experiments was higher compared with the yield from conventional cultivation. The content of essential oil in organic lavender flowers was lower then that from conventional ones. The content of essential oil and its composition of lavender flowers did not depend on localization. The satisfied yield of lavender seeds was obtained in organic experiments. The investigated lavender raw materials were below the level of standard contamination for raw materials treated with hot water (A) according to European Pharmacopoeia 7.0.
Rhododendron honey is a monofloral honey and it is collected from the flowers of Rhododendron species widely spreading over many countries, mainly in America, Turkey, Indonesia, Australia. It is belived that Rhododendron honey treats several disorders and is used traditionally as an alternative medicine. The determination of the chemical characteristics of the Rhododendron honey is essential for public health. In this research, the physicochemical characteristics of Rhododendron, chestnut and flower honey samples collected from beekeepers in Turkey were determined and compared. Physico-chemical parameters such as moisture, acidity, sucrose, invert sugar, fructose/glucose, conductivity, diastase and hydroxymethylfurfural were analysed in each honey sample. According to the results obtained, no differences were found in physico-chemical properties of Rhododendron, honey samples, except from moisture and acidity compared with those of chestnut and flower honeys. In order to differentiate Rhododendron honeys, new methods should be developed. This honey should be reintroduced to medicine and used in pharmaceutical industry.
The structure of floral nectaries of ivy (Hedera helix) was investigated under light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopes. The nectar of ivy is located on top of the inferior ovary forming a distinct undulating disc between the base of petals and the style. The ivy nectary represents open and persistent nectaries. During consecutive days of anthesis, nectaries change their colour from green to brown. The secretory epidermis is covered with a thick, deeply striated cuticle, and nectar is released by nectarostomata. Epidermal cells exhibited plastids with plastoglobules and a few starch grains as well as vacuoles containing anthocyanins, the content of which increased during the successive days of anthesis and nectar secretion. Multi-layered glandular parenchyma and, underneath, subglandular tissue are located under the epidermis. The nectary was supplied by vascular bundles with phloem and xylem. Numerous chloroplasts were visible in the cytoplasm of the external layers of glandular parenchyma; they were either typical with small starch grains or untypical with circular arrangement of thylakoids. Amyloplasts containing storage starch grains and numerous small vacuoles were present in the cells of deeper layers of the nectar-bearing tissue. Druses, flocculent residue, myelin figures and spherical deposits of unknown origin were visible in the gland parenchyma vacuoles.
The fructification of Chaenomeles japonica Lindl. and Ch. x superba grown in the Botanical Garden in Lublin was investigated in 1999 and 2002-2003. The influence of heterostyly on the degree of fruit setting and considerable morphological differences between fruits were examined. The three form heterostyly influenced the fruit to flowers ratio and fruit weight. Long-styled flowers set significantly more fruit (approx. 70%) and of higher weight (approx. 26 g) in comparison to fruit from midstyled flowers - 50% and 20 g, respectively. The higher yield was obtained from Chaenomeles japonica ~ 1-2 kg. The average yield of Ch. x superba was ~ 0.9 kg. While planting Chaenomeles shrubs for fruit production, attention should be paid to the participation of flower types with the view to eliminating shrubs with the domination of short-styled flowers with degenerated ovary.
The studies concerned the variability in nectar and pollen production in flowers of 75 double-low lines of white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) and a reference cultivar ‘Nakielska’. Also, rates of insect visitation to flowers in 19 lines were investigated. Significant genotypic differences were found in nectar amount, sugar concentration in nectar and total nectar sugar amount. The average nectar amount/10 flowers varied from 2.3 to 24.4 mg, with a mean 14.7 mg for ‘Nakielska’. Nectar concentration for most lines exceeded 20%. The majority (52%) of the lines tested produced more than 2 mg of sugars/10 flowers in nectar. The average amounts of pollen varied from 1.2 to 12.0 mg/10 flowers, with the mean 8.5 mg for ‘Nakielska’. No clear genotypic effect on the amount of pollen/10 flowers was demonstrated. The lines did not differed significantly in their attractiveness to flower visitors. The main foragers were honey bees (93% of all visiting insects). It is concluded that the double-low lines of S. alba are comparable to conventional cultivars in their potential for nectar flow but perform poorer as pollen producers.
