In the two-year field trials the effect of row covering of early potatoes were investigated on the total tuber yield and the yield of ware potatoes. Experiments were performed with cv. Adora at the Přerov on Labem locality in the Czech Republic. Row covering with textile positively influenced the yield of ware potatoes during harvest 67 days after planting (in the variant with the textile removed on 25th day after planting it was 20.1% higher as compared to the variant when the textile was removed on 45th day after planting).
In three-year field trials the effect of row covering with early potatoes on selected factors of tuber quality was evaluated. Experiments were conducted the Přerov on Labem locality in the Czech Republic with Adora and Impala potato cultivars. On the basis of statistical analysis of the results it is evident that row covering with the fleece 60 days after planting positively influenced dry matter content in tubers, but did not affect the content of polyphenols, nitrate and ascorbic acid.
Potassium is the main mineral component of potato tubers. With a high level of potato consumption, the crop also supplies the human organism with magnesium and phosphorus. The content of mineral components in potato tubers may change as an effect of agrotechnical factors. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of the type of cover (perforated polyethylene film, polypropylene fibre) and date of its removal (2 and 3 weeks after plant emergence) on phosphorus and magnesium in tubers of early potato cultivars (Aksamitka, Cykada). The potatoes were harvested 60 days after planting. Accelerated plant growth under covering resulted in the phosphorus content in tubers of cv. Aksamitka being 0.088 g kg1 d.m. higher in comparison with thecontrol, but did not affect the content of magnesium. With perforated film used to cover potato plants, an average content of phosphorus in tubers was by 0.217 g kg1 d.m than when polypropylene fibre cover was applied. The content of magnesium in tubers was on average 0.067 g kg1 d.m. higher under polypropylene fibre cover. Duration of the period when potato plants grew under cover did not significantly affect the phosphorus and magnesium accumulation in tubers.
On medium heavy soil, in 2002-2004, the experiments were carried out to determine the optimum nitrogen fertilization rates for early potato cultivars and the effect of fertilization on yield quality and storage durability of the potato tubers. The highest commercial yield was obtained for Denar cv. (51.7 t·ha⁻¹), the lesser for Felka and Korona cvs. and the least for Gracja cv. (35.1 t·ha⁻¹). The highest requirements in relation to nitrogen fertilization showed Felka and Gracja cultivars, tittle less - Denar and Korona cvs. Most susceptible to the common scab and hust internal spots was Felka potato cultivar whereas the Gracja and Korona cvs. showed the highest number of tubers whit hollow centre. As the nitrogen fertilization rates increased Denar and Korona potato cultivars cumulated increasing amounts of nitrates in the tubers. However, no effect of nitrate fertilization rates on the storage durability of tubers was observed.
