Taking into account the need of arranging and proper organisation of the wood market in Poland, it would be necessary to consider resigning from the traditional methods of market management, which in the present situation lead only to causing conflict between the participants of the market and thereby bring about its stagnation. The accurately described and newly formulated wood market science (German: Holzmarktlehre), being a specialist economic discipline, could become helpful in this scope. After putting all concepts into order and applying modern economics tools, it is likely to become an innovative discipline that will actively support the development of Polish "knowledge-based economy".
Modern economy increasingly depends on effective knowledge management – i.e. acquiring, generating, distributing and applying of knowledge in modern societies and organizations. In such circumstances more and more visible becomes a crisis of real leadership, or even, quite often, lack of leadership. We often observe how formal leaders of different kind, so important until recently, are rapidly losing their position – they continue to be “rulers” but are no longer “leaders”. The main objective of the “leadership” becomes building relations among members of the organization rather than competing for power. Such reinterpretation of modern management paradigm becomes a necessary pillar of development of modern knowledge-based economy.
Sector competitiveness does not constitute a simple sum of factors identified on different levels of economic analysis. It turns out that competitiveness is determined by both measurable and non-measurable factors. A growing influence of behavioural factors inclines to undertake aggregate research attempts of a qualitative nature. The authors of this paper have made an effort to confront the price and non-price factors of competitiveness based on a specific sector of economy, i.e. the round wood market in Poland.
In various countries, the definitions of a "best practice" can differ depending on the law, particular economic and political situation, or cultural and historic difference. Measures leading to the promotion and replication of best practices, for example in the scope of municipal services management in local self-governments, have been implemented in Western Europe successfully. It seems that showing analogous innovation-stimulating actions on the Polish wood market is enough to obtain the desired effects. This article is aimed at proposing implementation of best practices in the field of energy efficiency on the wood market as tools supporting Polish projects in terms of rational generation and utilisation of energy from renewable sources.
This article links to an earlier one published in Intercathedra Volume no. 27-4/2011 which dealt with a rather peculiar crisis of leadership that manifested itself during the recent global financial crisis, by presenting it the context of major theoretical concepts of regional development. In that context the authors had analysed the role of regional leadership in overcoming economic growth barriers. In this article the point of departure is accepting the crucial role of leadership – both in terms of regions (or sub-regions) as well as sectors/branches of economy - in stimulating economic growth and overcoming outcomes of the crisis. It is at the same time a new challenge for those research which are open for using a set of mesoeconomic tools, being at the same time open for experience of other disciplines, including psychology of management and social psychology.
Nanotechnology is expected to be a critical driver of global economic growth and development in this century. Using nanotechnology for production of nanomaterials with unique properties is expected to revolutionize technology and industry. The forest and wood products industry relies on a vast renewable resource base to manufacture a wide range of products that are indispensable in our modern society. By employing nanotechnology to revitalize the forest products industry, we can strengthen one of Polish core manufacturing sector. Poland has a great infrastructure for growing, harvesting and processing wood products, which provides a key employment base in almost every aspect. This infrastructure provides a fundamental strategic advantage that can be used for preserving the global economic competitiveness of this industry. Nanotechnology holds the promise of changing virtually all of the processes by which wood and paper products are now made, transforming the sector from a resource-based to a knowledge-based industry with much greater prospects for long-term stability.
This article is devoted to an analysis of roundwood price changes in the Polish market based on various sources of primary data. In the examined period high similarity of data was observed, regardless of the source of information. Most importantly, similar trends in the scope of roundwood price changes were identified.
