IWN-11 is a new liquid acetylsalicylic acid formulation that was developed by the Institute of Natural Fibres and Medicinal Plants Poznań and Poznań University of Life Sciences for enhancing resistance of crops to biotic and abiotic stresses. Field trials with sugar beet were conducted between 2008 and 2010 on black soil and pseudopodsolic soil. Post emergence application of IWN-11 significantly increased sugar beet root yield but only on pseudopodsolic soil. The best results were obtained when IWN-11 was applied at 2.0 l/ha and at BBCH 18 of sugar beet growth stage.
The scope and directions of research as well as future perspectives in implementing new technologies in plant protection regarding fibrous plants are presented. Nearly 80 years of studies conducted at the Institute of Natural Fibres and Medicinal Plants (INF&MP) reflected dominating trends in this field in Poland and the world. In the first decades of Institute’s work (1930–1960) most studies focused on prevention and mechanical methods of plant protection of fibrous plants against pests. From the early 60-ties until late 70-ties the studies aimed at development of chemical plant protection treatments with the use of herbicides, fungicides, bactericides, insecticides and plant growth regulators. Since the beginning of the 90-ties (20th century) development of eco-friendly treatments the key issue in the research. The applicative research on protecting fibrous plants against weeds and diseases are based on the results of the basic research e.g. on the flax and hemp biology, ontogenesis and morphogenesis, pests and their conglomerations, plant resistance to habitat stress.
The study was aimed at evaluation of resistance of breeding lines of fibrous and oil flax to Fusarium wilt. The studies were conducted under provocation conditions in field experiments. According to the results of long term research the crossings that showed the highest resistance to Fusarium were selected. These were the following genotypes: Nike, Natasja, Viking, Laura, Orszanski 2 , Marina, Ariane, Lazurnyj, Mogilewskij, Orszanskij 3, Fany, Szokinski, Jubilejnyj 2 and Olinette. The selected Polish varieties and all tested breeding lines are characterized with multi-factor resistance, so called horizontal resistance. This resistance is closely correlated with soil and climate conditions prevailing in Poland.
