In Turkey (in Anatolia) the occurrence of 16 recent species of the genus Zonites is confirmed. Five of them — Z. algirus, Z. smyrnensis, Z. casius, Z. rhodius symius and Z. caricus appear on the Greek islands, too, and two another ones are represented there as separate subspecies. Nine of the species known from the Asia Minor were investigated anatomically up to now. A new subgenus (or genus?) Turcozonites, very different in its genital morphology, and two new species Z. (Turcozonites ?) osmanicus and Z. (Turcozonites?) piratarum are described. A big geographical (?) variability of Z. (Turcozonites) megistus is discussed. — In the Appendix the genital organs of Z. (Z.) pergranulatus cycladicus from the Greek island Astypalaia are described and a check-list of all known species of Zonites is given.
Four new species: Gyralina (G.) sattmanni, G. (G.) hausdorfi, Doraegopis subaii and Oxychilus (Riedelius) juliae are described, and Oxychilus (Ortizius) tomlini (SMITH) is redescribed. Notes on some other species of Zonitidae are also includet.
In the East Pontine Mts (NE. Turkey) the occurrence of 27 species of Zonitidae sensu lato (incl. Gastrodontidae and Daudebardiidae) is confirmed. Four new species: Nastia viridula, Oxycbilus (Longiphallus) costatus, O. (Foreartiella) euxinus and O. (Betowskiella) sumelensis are described. For the monotypie genus Nastia gen. n. a new subfamily Nastiinae (in the Gastrodontidae) is established. The subgeneric name Pontoxychilus Riedel, 1970 is synonymized with Betowskiella Riedel, 1966. A zoogeographic analysis of the zonitid fauna of East Pontine Mts is given.
The paper is a review of 79 species and subspecies of the Zonitidae s.l. (i.e. Gastrodontidae, Zonitidae. s. str. and Daudebardiidae) recorded and/or confirmed from Turkey by the author, based on his own field trips and museum materials. Synonymy relevant to the studied area, references to literature containing descriptions and figures of shell and genitalia, taxonomie revisions, etc.; critical remarks on the taxonomical problems, variation, uncertain identifications and uncertain records; list of new localities, with reference to publications summarizing earlier faunistic data and discussion of the known distribution are provided for each species. Distribution of 50 species is illustrated with UTM grid maps. Besides, 5 species probably new to the science and still undescribed are mentioned and briefly characterized; 14 species whose occurrence in Turkey is probable (they are known from adjacent areas) are listed, as well as 6 species earlier recorded from Turkey based on misidentification or regarded by the author as nomina dubia. The paper is based on a critical analysis of literature data and extensive new material. It was preceded by taxonomie revisions and descriptions of new taxa.
The collection mentioned in the title includes nearly 400 species and subspecies, regarded at present as valid, and a few of uncertain status. Over 190 species/subspecies are represented by types, 97 of them by holo- or lectotypes. Besides, types of 33 nominal species and varieties, at present regarded as synonyms, are mentioned. Shell and alcohol-preserved materials, microscope slides of radulae and genitalia, are listed in an abbreviated form for each species. For species that are represented by types respective literature references are cited.
Variation of an abundant shell material and genital variation in 3 anatomically examined populations, as well as systematic position and taxonomic status of an endemic Crimean snail Oxychilus diaphanellus (Krynicki, 1836) have been studied. Based on revision of types, two more names, besides Hyalinia taurica Clessin, 1881, namely H. planaria Clessin, 1883 and H. Zonulata Westerlund, 1886, are synonymized with O. diaphanellus.
The genital organs of Zonites (Z.) osmanicus, Z. (Z.) casius and Z. (Z.) smyrnensis from Turkey (Asia Minor) and Z. (Z.) euboeicus from Euboea I., Greece are described and illustrated. Especially interesting is the structure of genitalia of Z. osmanicus, the only species of Zonites with the musculus retractor penis inserting apically on the flagellum. New distributional data of some species of Zonites are also given.
The paper is a critical review of the zonitid snails sensu lato, recorded from caves and other subterranean habitats of the Western Palaearctic. The group discussed is, quantitatively, the most important component of the land subterranean malacofauna. However, it is often difficult to include particular species in any ecological category proposed within the existing classifications of subterranean fauna. In the review, distribution, type of subterranean occurrence and basic literature are given for each species (or genus). The paper is to a considerable extent based on author's own studies and field observations.
Based on anatomical structure (genitalia, radula), and considering conchological characters, a new monotypic subgenus Iranoxychilus is established for Oxychilus herzi from N Iran.
A new zonitid species, probably belonging to Gyralina (Spelaeopatula), is described based on shell material as G. (S.)? nopcsai. Its exact taxonomic placement requires examination of its anatomical structure, and especially genitalia.
Vitrea vereae n. sp. is described from Bulgaria. It was found in the town of Stara Zagora and in the massif of Sarnena Sredna Gora. Habitat data are provided.
