It have been stated optimal solubilization time of keratin was 4 hours by the boiling temperature of the solution; the solubilization process was of phasic character. The concentration of urea taken to solubilize should amount 60-70% by weight. It have been also observed that the efficiency of solubilization of keratin from feather is related to the ratio of keratin/urea.: The keratin contribution should be maintained on the level of 20-30% by weight as compared to the amount of the urea.

Photoreactivable 5-l3-(p-iodoazidosalicylamide)allylJ-UDP-GlcNAc (5-IASA-UDP- -GlcNAc) was synthesized by a four-step procedure and used for photoaffinity labeling of UDP-GlcNAc-dependent enzymes. Upon iodination with 12SI, the compound was successfully applied to probe a purified UDP-GlcNAc pyrophosphorylase from pig liver. The enzyme was photoinactivated by the probe in the concentration-dependent manner, and was protected by UDP-GlcNAc and, to a lesser extent, by UTP and UDP-GlcCOOH.
