Swedish people highly esteem natural and cultural heritage. Artefacts of art and culture and natural monuments are the most precious assets. Single trees, alleys, stony pastures and such elements of landscape as springs, marshes, lakes and streams are also appreciated. Efforts are made to preserve abandoned household structures: sheds, forges, old tar manufacture facilities, mills, dams and other backwater facilities. Field roads, walls made of stone, boundary stones, sheds used as summer barns and wells are also protected. As maintenance of these structures is arduous, the owners of areas where they are located receive subsidies from the state. A number of countries follow the example of Swedish nature conservation system.
