Thirty three nests were found in 1984-1985 on the 22 km² study plot at altitudes of 500-1380 m a.s.l. Two more nests in adjacent areas were found at 120 m a.s.l., the lowest recorded in Greece. Nest cover was holly oak Quercus coccifera - 45.7%, coppice of young white oak Quercus pubescens -34,3%, abandoned fields -15.2% and common juniper Juniperus communis-6%. Nests were located in areas regularly grazed by goats and sheep, at slopes of 16-48%. An important factor was proximity to running water downhill. Egg laying started from late April to early June, depending on the altitude. Mean clutch size was 16 eggs (12-18) and hatching success 90.8% (70.6-100%). Sixty six percent of the nests were successful. The most important nest predators were Red Fox Vulpes vulpes and Beech Marten Martes foina. A male bird with brood patch was found incubating one of the nests.
