Learning and memory effects of angiotensin II (Ang II) microinjected unilaterally (left or right) and bilaterally into hippocampal CA1 area on the background of the inhibited hippocampal angiotensin 1 receptors type (ATI) of male Wistar rats were studied. It was found that the combination (losartan 100 ^g + Ang II 0.5^g) microinjected bilaterally or into the left CA1 area improved learning and memory in shuttle-box and step through behavioral tests as compared to the respective controls. The effects were more pronounced after injection into the left CA1 area as compared to the right-side. These findings suggest thatAng II infused on the background of the inhibited CA1 hippocampal AT1 receptors ameliorated the cognitive processes. The data show also an asymmetric effect of Ang II on learning and memory processes in the hippocampus. The stronger modulating effect after microinjection of the combination (losartan + Ang II) into the left CA1 hippocampal area suggests a leftward bias in the rat. The results point to a differential distribution of angiotensin II receptors modulating the learning and memory processes in the left and right hippocampal CA1 area.
Installing a secondary decomposing catalyst is an effective method for nitrous oxide emission reduction at a nitric acid production facility. Before the installation of a decomposing catalyst at a nitric acid plant in Devnya, Bulgaria, the N2O concentration in the tail gas was 1,754 mg/Nm3 while after the installation the N2O concentration was 212 mg/Nm3, which is almost 8.3 times lower. For the entire monitoring period a total N2O emission reduction of 7,021 Mg was achieved. Research of the catalyst’s behavior during the production campaign has been done, proving that the achieved reduction level depends on the catalyst’s functional activity and the technological process conditions. Planning the duration of the decomposing catalyst’s efficient operation throughout N2O monitoring data analysis provides effective emission reduction.
Negative impacts from application of fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture have been observed since the mid-20th century, when their use rapidly increased. This led to decrease in the number of species connected to the agricultural landscape. So-called integrated farming practices are currently being introduced that aim to mitigate negative impacts on the environment and to stabilize the numbers of wild flora and fauna. A number of studies have examined the positive influence of integrate and organic farming as modern agricultural practices in a European perspective. The positive impact of these practices is particularly evident in plants and invertebrates studied in Italy, Austria, Germany and the UK, for example. There is little such data from Central and Eastern Europe, however, even as the region has specific environmental conditions due especially to the more moderate impact of agriculture there during the second half of the 20th century. In this study, we compared the numbers of herbal and bird species on crop fields and meadows managed with conventional versus integrated systems in Southern and Central Bohemia, the Czech Republic. Our analysis included also the effects of land parcel size, position within these parcels and presence of other habitat elements (ditch, tree, field roads, dunghill, field margins – boundaries, bushes, fallow area) in the vicinity of study plots. We found that herbal communities were significantly more species-rich on lands with integrated farming and similar results were obtained in the case of birds, except there was a non-significant effect of integrated farming on bird species richness in meadows. In addition, the species richness of plants decreased as land parcel size increased. In conclusion, herbal and bird communities were shown to benefit more distinctively from integrated farming in Central Europe, where this effect is not considered unambiguous due to the higher overall habitat heterogeneity and historically lower burdening of farmland with pesticides and fertilizers. The results support the idea that it makes sense even here to introduce integrated forms of agricultural practice.
The present paper studies the perceived orientation of line patterns with variable elongation, line length, orientation jitter, and presentation time. It evaluates whether the internal noise and sampling efficiency evaluated by equivalent noise paradigm (Pelli 1981) depend on the spatial configuration and temporal characteristics of the stimulation. The evaluated internal noise was compared to the results of double-pass noise estimation. In addition, the eye movements of the participants during active exploration of the line patterns were recorded and analyzed with respect to the stimulus characteristics. The results indicate the presence of late internal noise and show that the internal noise and sampling efficiency strongly depend on the elongation, duration and line length of the patterns. The response time increases with the orientation jitter and with the variability in line length of the patterns. It is longer also near the reference orientation for the low levels of added external noise. These results contradict some of the major assumptions of the variance-summation model and question its applicability in characterizing the perceived orientation of multi-element patterns.
