Currently, there are two sauropod taxa known from the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) Nemegt Formation of Gobi Desert, Mongolia: Nemegtosaurus from the Nemegt locality and Opisthocoelicaudia from the Altan Uul IV locality. Both taxa are represented by not overlapping elements (skull and partial postcranial skeleton respectively), which arises question on their possible synonymy. Five articulated sauropod dorsal vertebrae (PIN 3837/P821, dorsals 6–10) were found in 1949 by the Mongolian Expedition of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR at the Nemegt locality. This specimen is similar to Opisthocoelicaudia in having a strong ventral ridge on dorsal centra, a low neural arch which is anteroposteriorly narrowest at the junction with the centrum and widens dorsally, and lack of hyposphene–hypantrum articulations. PIN 3837/P821 differs from Opisthocoelicaudia by having the less dorsoventrally flattened dorsal centra, a shallow ventral concavity of dorsal centra in lateral view, a vertical posterior centrodiapophyseal lamina (pcdl) in dorsals 8 and 9, a postzygodiapophyseal lamina (podl) that roofs the centrodiapophyseal fossa (pocdf), and strongly developed accessory laminae within the parapophyseal centrodiapophyseal fossa (pacdf). The sauropod femora from Nemegt Formation differ from the femur of Opisthocoelicaudia by the medial condyle extending more distally compared with the lateral condyle. Most likely these femora and PIN 3837/P821 belong to Nemegtosaurus, which would make this taxon distinct from Opisthocoelicaudia by discussed characters of dorsal vertebrae and femur
The late Campanian djadochtatherioid multituberculate Catopsbaatar catopsaloides was originally known from three skulls from Hermiin Tsav in the Gobi Desert (Mongolia). Three more skulls from Hermiin Tsav are now available, associated with parts of the previously unknown postcranial skeleton, which will be described separately. We describe herein the skull and dentition of C. catopsaloides, based on all available material, housed in PIN, PM, and ZPAL collections. The genera Catopsbaatar, Djadochtatherium, and Kryptobaatar share several characters, unknown in Tombaatar, such as very long postorbital processes directed postero−laterally and downwards, parietal ridges extending from the posterior margins of the postorbital processes postero−medially, and nuchal crests with prominent lateral wings, incurved anteriorly in the middle, so that the skull in dorsal view is shorter in the middle than laterally. Catopsbaatar shares with Djadochtatherium a very high and prominent anterior zygomatic ridge, and presence of the masseteric protuberance, but differs from it and from other djadochtatherioid genera in having the orbit situated more posteriorly, the intermediate zygomatic ridge adhering to the anterior ridge, and a smaller trapezoidal (rather than crescent−shaped) p4 without ridges; it differs from Kryptobaatar and Djadochtatherium in having three upper premolars (P2 being lost) and shares this last character with Tombaatar. Catopsbaataris known not only from Hermiin Tsav, but also from Baruungoyot Formation of Khulsan, represented there by a single m2. We demonstrate that the separation of the masseter superficialis into two parts, the origins of which leave scars on the lateral wall of the zygomatic arch surrounded by zygomatic ridges, occurs in all the multituberculates (beginning with Paulchoffatiidae), and is regarded as a multituberculate autapomorphy.

Discovery of Middle Jurassic mammals from Siberia

Mammal remains from the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) Berezovsk Quarry on the south of Krasnoyarsk Territory, West Siberia, Russia are referred to Docodonta indet. (two edentulous fragmentary dentaries) and Mammalia indet. (a single−rooted tooth). The dentaries exemplify a unique combination of plesiomorphic characters found among stem mammals only in Docodonta and Morganucodon: well developed Meckel’s groove, trough for postdentary bones with overhanging medial ridge and a diagonal ridge on the floor separating the “adductor fossa” and angular facet, and well developed and posteroventrally directed pseudangular process with facet for the reflected lamina of angular. Both specimens share with Docodonta the prearticular facet placed ventral to the angular facet and extending posteriorly to the mandibular foramen. This facet is not present in Morganucodon, where the prearticular lies medial to the angular. Medial position of the prearticular in Morganucodon is connected with the compound jaw articulation in this genus, in which a rudimentary articular−quadrate mandibular joint is present medially to the dentary−squamosal joint. In Docodonta indet. from Berezovsk Quarry, Haldanodon and Docodon the position of the prearticular ventral to the angular is connected with the position of the articular complex ventral to the dentary condyle. Such articular complex could not function as a mandibular joint and postdentary bones in Docodonta were used solely for sound transmission. One specimen from Berezovsk Quarry shares with Morganucodon a groove for replacement dental lamina, which was not reported previously for Docodonta. Mammal remains from Berezovsk Quarry are among the oldest occurrences for Docodonta, the first record of Jurassic mammals for Siberia, and only second such record for the whole of Russia.
