Tilia cordata Mill, and Tilia platyphyllos Scop, are two lime species native to Poland. For over 6000 years we can observe disappearance of these two species from Polish woodlands. The main reason of this process was the human activity. Long-lasting anthropogenic pressure together with natural disturbances brought about changes in forest composition that had an adverse effect upon lime. On the other hand for many years T. cordata Mill., T platyphyllos Scop, and their hybrids have been planted in parklands and towns. In consequence of such process forest populations of lime can be of an artificial origin.
