The aim of the research was to obtain "native" referential values for the indicators of the red and white blood cell systems and platelet indicators in the clinically healthy foals of purebred Arabs and Polish cold-blooded breed, in the period from birth till weaning. The morphological examination was performed ex tempore with help of the automatic haematological analyser. The obtained results demonstrate that the majority of haematological indicators of the red blood cell and white blood cell systems of warm-blooded foals, especially in the first 2-3 months of their life, are statistically higher. It can be assumed that within the indicators of the white blood cell system, the statistically important differences between the groups occur rarely, as do mutual (inter- factor) correlative connections or the trends comparable for both groups.
Fiber osteodystrophy (nutritional secondary hyperthyroidism) is an uncommon and poorly investigated disease of horses, connected with diet mistakes and secondary hormonal disturbances. The aim of this study was to asses selected biochemical parameters before and after the treatment of advanced forms of this illness. Horses from the control (healthy) and experimental groups were at the same age and originated from the same area. The affected horses were fed with fodder rich in phosphorus (oats). The horses of the control group were fed with corn mix, carrots, and sugar beets, and had free access to a saline lick. The clinical signs were big head symptoms, painfulness of cranial bones (especially the jaw bone), breathing problems, and joint pain in the extremities. P concentration in blood was statistically significantly lower, Ca and Mg concentrations were within the lowest physiological norms, and there was a significant increase in AST, AP and GGTP activity. After treatment, P concentration in blood increased statistically significantly, and hepatic indicators were slightly improved. The clinical symptoms remained unchanged.
The main aim of this study was to compare selected nonspecific immunity parameters in 14 allergic and 12 healthy horses. Each animal was assessed according to the following parameters: in vitro functional capacity of phagocytic cells using the nitro blue tetrazolium chloride reduction test, both spontaneous (NBT) and zymozan stimulated (NBTs), and ingestion capacity of phagocytic cells using a phagocytic index test (IF) and percentage of phagocytosing neutrophils activity (%KF). Differences were demonstrated between the group of allergic horses, especially with severe allergy symptoms, and healthy horses in NBTs values, with higher values in healthy horses. The values of the phagocytic index were significantly higher in horses with allergy.
