The investigations were carried out on 30 lambs of the Lowland Polish Longwooled breed from a few hours to 13 days of life. The number of erythrocytes (E), haemoglobin concentration (Hb), haematocrit (Ht), number of leukocytes (L), leukogram, plasma immunoglobulin complex (Ig) and total protein (TP) were measured. The highest number of E —11.78 X 10⁶/µl, Ht —48.2% and Hb —14.97 g% was found in the youngest lambs aging 1 day. These values decreased in the subsequent days of life to the lowest mean values noted at the day 13 : E —9.80 X 10⁶/µl, Ht 32.0% and Hb —11.65 g%. The highest number of leukocytes (8.25 X 10³/µl was observed in the first day of life with a tendency to decrease to the lowest mean value of 5.43 X 10³/µl in the day 6 followed by an increasing to 6.95 X 10³/µl on day 13. Lymphocytes composed of 72.4% of lymphocytes in the first day of life increased during the observation period to 83.7% on the day 13. Neutrophils decreased from 26.8% tp 13.3%, respectively. The lowest blood plasma protein concentration (6.6 g%) was observed in the first hours of life only with traces of Ig. In the next following days TP increased to 7.0—8.8 g%, while Ig was in the range of 2.5—2.0. The obtained results point to the influence of short periods of time (days) during 13 days of postnatal life on physiological values of haematologic parameters that should be taken into account at blood examinations of lambs.
