The Roman snail, also called escargot de Bourgogne, is considered a national delicacy in France, and is deeply entrenched in French cuisine and tradition. This results in a constant demand, for its meat, which is not fully met by the domestic production and the French have to import the snails Recently, extensive demand and high prices have led to a dramatic drop in population of the Roman snail in its natural habitat which made exporting countries impose protective regulations. In order to meet the evergrowing demand edible snail breeding is being introduced.
Background: The objective of the study was to assess the effectiveness of a 2-week therapeutic programme consisting of combination therapy and postisometric relaxation and its effect on the mobility of joints and the level of perception of pain in patients with osteoarthritis of hip joints. Material/Methods:The research was carried out on subjects clinically and radiologically diagnosed as patients with osteoarthritis of hip joints. 30 subjects, including 7 men and 23 women (average age of 67.8 yrs), underwent the examinations. The therapy lasted 2 weeks and consisted of 10 treatment sessions. The medical program included a combination therapy and individual exercises, i.e. postisometric relaxation of the hip joint. In the combination therapy conventional TENS and ultrasounds were applied. Moreover, tailored exercises were performed systematically every day at home. Results: The study proved that an individually prepared therapeutic program including postisometric relaxation and combination therapy improves ROM in all planes of hip joins in osteoarthritis. It was also stated that after 2 pain assessment tests (the VAS and Laitinen scales) the therapy was confirmed to be a successful method in pain relief. The researchers also noticed that systematically conducted therapy led to reducing the incidence of pain which is manifested by limitation of pharmacotherapy. Conclusions: The research shows that combination therapy together with postisometric relaxation is an effective form of conservative treatment for degenerative changes in the hip joint.
The analysis presented in this paper aimed to identify trends in the prevalence of the two extremes of body fat disorders over a period of 20 years (1979-1999) and to form a comparative basis for further studies of physical development of the youth of the Pomerania region.The study population consisted of 23,854 boys and girls aged 7 to 18 years attending schools in rural and urban areas in the Pomerania administrative region. An overweight and underweight population was identified based on the body mass index (BMI) according to WHO, CDC and the Mother and Child Institute recommendations. The following threshold values were adopted: BMI≤ 5th centile for underweight, BMI between 5th and 15th centile for slimness, between 85th and 95th centile for overweight, and BMI≥ 95th centile for obesity).The highest percentage of boys with a BMI between the 85th and 95th centile was seen in 1999, with figures of 8.7% among younger boys and 7.9% among older boys. This represented respective increases of 3.2 and 2.2 percentage points over 1979 data. The proportion of overweight boys (7 - 18 years) increased from 5.6% in 1979 to 7.4% in 1989 and 8.4% in 1999. The differences between these percentages (among both younger and older boys) in the study period (1979-1999) were statistically significant. Comparing 1989 and 1999, statistically significant differences were only identified among younger boys, and between 1979 and 1989 differences were statistically significant among older boys and for the entire study population.The 20-year period was marked by increasing prevalence of overweight among the boys and girls. Awareness of the consequences of developmental dysharmonies in the form of over- and underweight demands that these trends be further monitored.
In order to assess the effect of alternating electromagnetic and direct magnetic field on adult Helix aspersa O. F. Müller and their eggs, adults and eggs of H. aspersa maxima Taylor and H. aspersa aspersa O. F. Müller were exposed to such fields with different parameters, and the following life cycle traits were observed: condition of hibernating adults, their survival rate during hibernation and reproduction, egg mass, hatching success, growth rate of hatchlings and body mass of next generation adults. Adults were exposed to sinusoidal, alternating electromagnetic fields of 50 Hz, 100 Hz and 200 μT, and magnetic induction of 50 Hz, as well as a field of 175 μT and 10–1000 Hz (repetition period 80 minutes). Egg batches were exposed to direct magnetic fields of magnetic induction 5 μT and 10 μT and alternating electromagnetic fields of analogous induction and frequency of 50 Hz. The effects varied depending on the parameters of the fields, subspecies and life cycle stage. Adult H. aspersa maxima was more sensitive to the changes in characteristics of electromagnetic field than H. aspersa aspersa, but the two subspecies showed a similar reaction to exposing their eggs to direct or alternating magnetic field. Probably direct field had a greater selection effect compared to alternating field, removing weaker genotypes at embryonic stage; this resulted in a greater mean body mass of the next generation adults. The results are preliminary; further studies, with further modifications of parameters of the fields applied are necessary.
Background: The objective of the study was to assess the efficiency of visualization training based on motivating instructions of a general character in order to increase the knee joint mobility, reduce pain and increase the quadriceps muscle mass of the thigh in patients after the knee joint arthroscopy. Material/Methods: F10 outpatient clinic patients after arthroscopy of the knee joint (average age 35 yrs) were subject to research. Physiotherapeutic treatment comprised an improvement program to increase the range of flexion in the knee joint (full ROM), align limbs circumference and reduce pain. The research group was divided into 2 subgroups. In group I, the control group, improving exercises and physical treatment were applied, while in group II, the experimental one, improvement and physical treatment program was expanded with visualization. The sample selection was random. Results: The research showed that, irrespective of the time after operation, the experimental group felt less pain than the control one, when the latter used classical methods of joint improvement. It was also stated that regardless of the time after operation, the group using visualization achieved greater improvement in the knee flexion than the standard group. The scientists also claimed that the increase in post-operative limb circumference depended on the applied therapeutic method. In the group with a visualization program a linear growth of limb circumference with the passage of time was observed. The experimental group achieved greater improvement in the post-operative leg circumference than the control group. Conclusions: The study shows that visualization may be an effective supplement of a therapeutic procedure; however, deeper evaluation of its efficacy at different stages of patient’s improvement requires further research and observations.
