In her article, the author presents the factors causing occurrence of the phenomenon of consumption servicisation. She discusses the macroeconomic approach to this phenomenon, i. e. the share of services in private consumption of the sector of households, and the micro- economic approach, i. e. the share of expenses on services in households' consumption expenditure, with a particular consideration of changes in the share of expenses on medical services in expenditure on health carried out by Polish households.
In her article, the author discussed the value of medicines sold in retail prices (carrying out relevant additional estimations in case where she had the IMS Health data), including the value of transactions made in the market for hospital services, amount of refunds within the framework of pharmacy market, and population's expenditure on purchasing pharmaceuticals. She also presented the level of monthly per capita expenses on purchasing pharmaceuticals, dynamics of their changes (nominal and real) as well as the share of expenditure on medicines in the expenditure on healthcare and in households' total expenditure, the level of monthly per capita expenses incurred in 2001-2008 by various socio-economic groups of households, the share of monthly expenses on medicines in the expenditure on healthcare of various socio-economic groups of households in 2001-2008 as well as the share of monthly expenses on purchasing pharmaceuticals (medicines) in total expenditure of those households.
In her article, the author is analysing the changes in the pattern of expenditure made by households that occurred in Poland in 1995-2006. The surveys show that over that period there decreased, in total expenditure by Polish households, shares of expenses on foods, clothes and footwear, and — to a minor extent — on education; however, there took place an increase in the share of expenses on use of flats and energy carriers, healthcare, transport and communication as well as — interesting enough — on recreation and culture. In the majority of socioeconomic groups of Polish households, there has been outlined the so-called industrial model of consumption.
The article presents the level of expenditure by various socioeconomic groups of households on healthcare, its share in total expenditure and expenses on drugs and healthcare in 1995-2005. In the period in question, the analysed expenses grew in all the socioeconomic groups of households, though the dynamics of growth was different. The highest expenses on health protection and drugs were in the period in question in case of households and retired people and pensioners. This occurred in result of higher incidence of chronic diseases requiring a systematic, lengthy and costly treatment.
The value of transactions made in the Polish pharmaceutical market (both the hospital and pharmacy market) in 2001–2010 was systematically growing; the growth trend was also specific for the share of private financing of expenses on medicines (the decreasing share of refunding medicines). Among medicines there are distinguished medicines sold by prescription (Rx) and those sold over the counter (OTC); they are characterised by a different set of demand’s determinants. In both cases important is advertising; in case of Rx medicines, it is addressed exclusively to physicians, and in case of OTC drugs — to all potential purchasers. In the surveys on accessibility of healthcare, respondents pay attention, inter alia, to the cases of lack of funds on purchase of medicines; they make attempts to borrow from the family, buy only some medicines or — following pharmacist’s advice — buy cheaper medicines.
