In their article, the authors undertook an attempt to examine the socio-economic differentiation of the service sector in the European Union in 2008. There was used for that purpose the Hellwig development gauge. In result of grouping, there were received 4 typological classes. For the set up typological classes, there was carried out an analysis of the socio-economic indices. It was demonstrated that between individual countries there occurred significant spreads in the level of economic development and the service sector was characterised by a great differentiation between individual states as regards employment and gross value added. The authors pointed out to the progressing servicisation of the economy, i.e. an increase of the role of services both in the employment structure and in creation of gross value added.
