The examinations comprised all the mares and stallions of the stud K in the period from January 1989 to February 1991. Mares aged 6—12 months to 12 years were divided into 13 groups (from A to M). Serological tests were performed three times (I, II, III) at intervals of 1 years. The percentage of mares with neutralizing antibodies against EAV was 53.3, 67.5 and 48.5 (consecutive years). The titers of the antibodies ranged from 4 to ≥ 512. In the course of examinations the titers were 64—128, 32—64 and 16—32. In 24 of 27 fresh cases of infections between the first and second examination the appearance of specific antibodies was observed at week 3 after covering by a stallion with antibodies against EAV. In the same period there was noticed also a significant per cent of infections in 6—12 old mares of the group A (50%) and L (27.7%) being in contact with the mares covered by an infected stallion. After elimination of that stallion from the stud the number of new infections decreased markedly and only two cases were found in that time (between the second and third examination). The findings indicate that the primary transmission of EAV in the stud K took place through the genital tract due to infection by the infected stallion, and the secondary — by the respiratory tract.
The examinations concerned 26 dead foals sent for the diagnostic purposes from the English thoroughbred and halfbred studs located in the Silesia district. From the samples of 14 foals EVA was isolated in cell cultures. The results of gross, histopathological and bacteriological studies were described. Eight foals were below 14 days and the others between 2 and 4 months. Necropsy of the foals showed a variety of gross lesions due to the secondary bacterial infection. There were found inflammatory changes in the alimentary tract (in 3 animals), purulent pneumonia (in 4 animals) then contagious equine metritis, septicaemia, generalized pyemia and chronic ossificant myocarditis. In three foals no secondary infection was observed. As it was shown in the study, EVA in foals was frequently complicated by secondary bacterial infection making diagnosis difficult.
The results of autopsy finding, histopathological and virological examinations of 44 spontaneously aborted fetuses of breed mares are described. In cultures of rabbit kidney cells (RK-13) from the specimens of the spleen, liver and lungs of 18 fetuses Equine arteritis virus (EAV) was isolated. In 11 cases subictericus cases, transudation in body cavities, haemorrhages in serous membranes and haemostasis in mesenteric vessels was observed. Histopathological examinations of the fetuses revealed atrophy of lymphatic tissue in the spleen and mesenterial lymph nodes. Changes characteristic of EVA were seen in arterioles of muscular type of 6 fetuses but they were poorly pronounced. Some cells of tunica adventitia were congested and hyaline changes and disintegratio of mediacites of tunica intima was also visible. Small inflammatory infiltrations in the arterioles were observed only in two examined fetuses.
