The studies, which have been earned out in the Research Institute of Medicinal Plants in Poznań for more than 20 years have shown that most of herbs is highly contaminated by saprophytic aerobic bacteria, among which arc spores of aerobic bacilli, as well as by moulds. Moreover, herbal plants are also in a high degree contaminated by the Enterobacteriaceae bacilli. As a result an urgent necessity of setting up the adequate pharmacopeal requirements has arisen. According to the mentioned above project of microbiological requirements, herbs have been divided into 3 groups. The raw materials of the 1st group are assigned for preparing granulates, tablets, dragées, capsules, aqueous extract, infusions, decoctions, macerations and preparations for external use. They can not have more than 10.000 of aerobic bacteria, 100 yeasts as well as 100 bacilli from the Enterobacteriaceae family in 1 g. Besides, they have to be free of S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and Salmonella. The raw materials of (lie Und group may be used for alcoholic preparations, isolated compounds, complexes, concentrates, oil preparations, essential oils and for gaining herbs of the 1st group after decreasing their microbiological contaminations by means of chemical and physical methods. Tli ose raw materials should not contain more than 1.000.000 of aerobic bacteria and 10.000 of yeasts and moulds in 1 g. The lllid group consists of herbs, which microbiological contaminations is higher in comparison with the plants of the Und group. They are designed only for receiving herbs of the 1st group after decreasing their contaminations by chemical and physical methods, as well as after checking on the presence of aflatoxins.
