Introduction. Nutritional habits and physical activity are fundamental for a healthy lifestyle. The aim of the paper is to present differences in the area of important pillars of health taking into account youth’s gender. Material and methods. The research was conducted on Polish high school students in Riga, Latvia. The diagnostic survey method was used with International Physical Activity Questionnaire - IPAQ’s short version and the Health Behaviour Questionnaire. Results. There are major differences in health behaviour between girls and boys, including willingness to lose and gain weight, various motives for exercising to gain or lose body weight and the fear of weight gain. The field of physical activity regarding greater activity and participation in intensive exercises was dominated by boys. Conclusions. The school process of eating habits education and physical activity should be modified.
Introduction. Self-treatment, defined as application of drugs without prescription without consulting your doctor has become a common phenomenon. Easy access to this group of pharmaceutical. advertising campaigns and lack of awareness of adverse effects as a result of incorrect application makes drugs without prescription the medications which have become our first choice. The aim of the study is to assess the problem of the use of over the counter (OTC) drugs by young people living in the Silesian Voivodeship. Material and methods. The study included 180 persons from the Silesian voivodeship at the age of 18-30. The research tool was an author’s, anonymous questionnaire. The questions included within it concerned, among others: frequency, form and side effects of drugs applied without prescription. Results. Despite the fact that the majority of respondents (57%) assess their health state as good, the overwhelming number of people (91%) report applying medications without a prescription. The most popular OTC pharmaceutical products include painkillers and vitamins. One in five respondents (20%) admits that he or she consumes more medication than it is recommended in the package leaflet. Conclusions. Very good and good health state declared by the respondents does not exclude accepting their medication without prescription. In case of treatment of intermittent or mild symptoms, the use of medications without a prescription – saves patient’s time and unburdens health care system. This phenomenon, however, is a challenge for the public health sector. Actions must be undertaken which are aimed at raising consumers-patients’ awareness regarding the dangers posed by improper use of OTC drugs.
The aim of the work was to define the differences between boys selected for football training and their peers at the beginning stage of different team sports training, as well as those that do not practice any sports discipline. The research material consisted of 97 schoolboys at the age of 10 selected to practice team sports, including football, and 39 non-training boys. All boys attended Szczecin primary schools. Apart from the basic anthropometric characteristics, the following motor skills were analyzed: kinesthetic differentiation, reaction speed, movement frequency, spatial orientation, static balance, maximal lactic anaerobic power, maximal nonlactic anaerobic power, fast muscle activation, aerobic endurance and absolute muscle strength. Not all test results are expressed in SI units. Data obtained through the applied method served as the grounds for defining a profile of a “young football player” as the premise to improve the process of preliminary selection for football. Candidates selected for soccer training presented higher level of kinesthetic differentiation than all other examined boys. They also presented higher level of movement frequency than volleyball players and higher level of space orientation than the not-trained boys. Soccer players nevertheless presented lover level of time of reaction than the candidates selected for basketball training. Results of all condition abilities tests obtained by soccer players were statistically significant better than the one obtained by the untrained boys (p ≤ 0.001) and the candidates for volleyball training (p ≤ 0.05, p ≤ 0.001). The greatest differences were noticed in tests of aerobic endurance and maximal non-lactic and lactic anaerobic power.
Background. Appropriate nutrition is one of the most important factors affecting the proper development of man, nutritional status and maintaining good health. Adolescence is a period of development of skills of self-determination and self-realization, also in the case of nutrition. Children and school-age youth are the group most vulnerable to the effects of incorrect nutrition. The way of nutrition during this period determines psychophysical and emotional development, effectiveness in learning process and has influence on health in adulthood. Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the habits and nutrition preferences in secondary school students from Rzeszów and Krosno age 16-19 years and to identify the differences between their eating behaviours. Material and methods. The study involved 300 secondary school students from Rzeszów and Krosno. The research material was the Authors’ questionnaire containing questions examining the eating habits of surveyed students. The statistical analysis was performed using the program StatSoft, Inc. STATISTICA version 12.0. To evaluate the differences between the two examined qualities there was used the Chi2 test of independence. As the statistically significant level there was assumed the level of p ≤ 0.05. Results. In the surveyed group of high school students, more than half (59.66%) ate 4-5 meals a day. Snacking between meals declared 95% of high school students. Between meals the youth most frequently consumed fruits and vegetables (72.99%) and sweets (59.66%). Daily consumption of first breakfast before leaving the home declared more than half (62.33%) of the surveyed youth. Consuming products containing complete protein several times a week was declared by 49%. Whole wheat bread was daily consumed by 10.33% of the respondents, and grain products are daily consumed by 52.66% of the youth. 43.33% every day drank milk and milk products, while fruits and vegetables several times a day were consumed by 59.66% of the surveyed students. Consumption of products of “fast-food” type several times a month was declared by 49.66%, while irregular consumption of meals was declared by 20.33% of high school students. Physical activity was declared by 93.99%, and 3-5 times a week by only 21.66% of the surveyed students. Conclusions. The conducted research shows that eating habits of most of the surveyed secondary school students both from Rzeszów and Krosno are satisfactory. The comparison of dietary habits among secondary school students showed no significant differences. Both groups committed similar errors: sweets snacking between meals, irregular meals and insufficient physical activity. A positive phenomenon was snacking of fruit and vegetables between meals and selection of mineral water and juices as the most frequently consumed beverages.
Polish educational system is evolving together with the changes occurring in the world. However, in many cases, the pace of this evolution does not guarantee full equipping the graduate with the knowledge needed on the future job market. Certainly there are formed the basic skills which will be used by the youth in their future job. The aim of the article is the assessment of the place of geographic education (acquired knowledge and moulded skills) in creating vocational skills of the youth. The results of the research among the pupils of the last year of secondary school are presented in the article.
Aim The aim of this paper is the assessment of eating habits of high school students from grades 2 and 3, including eating habits, self-evaluation of diet and the most common nutrition mistakes committed by the members of the studied group. Materials and methodology The study involved 333 high school students between the age of 17 and 19. The group consisted of 150 girls and 183 boys. Data was collected using an original survey which consisted of questions dealing with diet and respondent’s particulars. The study was anonymous. The results have been subjected to statistical analysis using Pearson’s chi-squared test. The statistical differences recognized as significant were those with probability of p<0.05 Results The majority reaching nearly 40% of respondents declared that they eat 4 meals a day. Over 60% eat breakfast every day. The number of students who declared that they do not eat breakfast at all amounted to 48. Over 55% do not pay attention to their eating habits, whereas 45 students consider them unhealthy. About 60% of respondents declare that they do not drink energy drinks. Within the group of students who consume such drinks the most often declared frequency was 1-2 times a week. The answers, however, vary between the female and the male group (chi-square=82.72121, p≤0,05); 75% of males do not consume energy drinks, among females the percentage amounts to mere 43%. Conclusions The students taking part in the study commit nutrition mistakes which might be a sign of unsufficient level of health education within that field. The nutritional education of the youth should start in primary school and be adapted to the needs and possibilities of the target group. In the face of poor diet, it seems justified to analyze the sources of information on nutrition used by the youth in terms of their credibility.
The investigations aimed at finding the interdependencies between motor fitness and somatic traits, and the degree of environment pollution. The examined material consisted of children and teenagers from the environs of Cracow, grouped in three age categories (1002 girls and 1043 boys), and was classified following the environmental pollution intensity of the locality. Considered were two extreme groups of low and high pollution. The examinations included somatic traits, functional abilities, coordination ability and energetic abilities. The results indicate that functional and motor abilities, especially coordination skills, are a more sensitive index of detrimental effects of pollution than somatic characteristics.
The Legnica-Głogow Copper Mining District has been the site of metal mining for more than 50 years. Intensive environmental actions have, more recently, been aimed at reducing emissions of harmful substances in the region. We compared the blood lead concentrations of children resident in the copper smelting district in southwestern Poland in 1995 and 2007. The sample included 1,405 children, 7-15 years of age, resident in the same communities in the Legnica-Głogow Copper Mining District in 1995 (432 boys, 403 girls) and 2007 (279 boys, 291 girls). Blood samples were drawn (venipuncture) and analyzed for lead levels (Pb-B) with the same protocol in both years (atomic absorption spectrometry in a graphite furnace). Analysis of covariance, with age and age squared as covariates, was used to compare blood lead levels between years, regions (Głogow and Legnica), and genders. The prevalence of children with blood lead levels >6 μg/dl was compared between years, regions, and genders, and was compared with the chi square statistic (χ²). Blood lead level was significantly higher in 1995 (7.52±0.12 μg/dL) compared to 2007 (4.80±0.16 μg/dL), a decline of 2.72±0.19 μg/dL over the 12-year interval. Blood lead levels were higher in boys than in girls in each year, and declined between 1995 and 2007 in each gender, 8.61±0.16 μg/dL and 5.31±0.23 μg/dL, respectively, in boys, and 6.43±0.17 μg/dL and 4.29±0.22 μg/dL, respectively, in girls. Percentages of high blood lead levels (>6 μg/dL) were significantly higher in boys than girls in both years (1995: 77.5% and 51.9%, respectively; 2007: 32.6% and 16.5%, respectively), and declined significantly between 1995 and 2007 in both genders. Blood lead levels decreased over the interval of 12 years in school children resident in the Legnica-Głogow Copper Mining District.

Background. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between eating behaviour, health perception and obesity risk awareness in adolescents. Material and methods. This cross-sectional study was completed with 579 adolescents. Stratified and simple random sampling methods were used in the selection of the high schools, classes and students. The data was collected through the information form, Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire and Perception of Health Scale. Results. The mean score of health perception of the adolescents was 52.34±7.59. There was a positive relationship between total health perception score and emotional eating behaviour score of the adolescents (p=0.003). There was a negative relationship between total health perception score restricted eating behaviour (p=0.029), and external eating behaviour score (p<0.001). The emotional eating behaviour (p=0.007), external eating behaviour (p=0.001) and total eating behaviour score (p<0.001) of the adolescents who believed they had an obesity risk were found to be higher than the adolescents who believed they did not. Conclusions. The adolescents with better health perception are less affected by the environment and are able to restrict their food choices. The adolescents who think that they have an obesity risk consume more food due to their emotional state and external exposure.
Physical activity is one of the most important elements of a healthy lifestyle, and its lack or insufficient amounts can lead to serious health disorders. There are many adult diseases which are associated with the behaviour, lifestyle during puberty, including physical inactivity. It was therefore decided in this study to present the physical activity of young people from six countries in the world in the context of different variables. The following countries: Brazil, Spain, Poland, Czech Republic, Norway and Nepal were selected for comparison. Although all studies used the same standardized research tool, ie. the International Physical Activity Questionnaire IPAQ, in the course of analysis, the authors encountered difficulties with comparability, associated with the usage of various methods and data processing, which could result in different or reduced comparability. Consequently, it was decided not to make a detailed comparative analysis of individual research results and the presentation of the key conclusions brought about selected studies worldwide. Analyses of studies which have been conducted in different cultural contexts, confirm once again the thesis of the decline in physical activity levels with age for both girls and boys. Gender quite substantially differentiated physical efforts in adolescents. Girls at the age of adolescence are less physically active than boys. It was also noted that the increase of sedentary behaviour among children and adolescents and their disastrous consequences have an impact on the health and life in this age group, the studies of sedentary lifestyle have become a very important subject of many studies. Girls are still “more sedentary” than boys. Many authors, in order to ensure the reliability and relevance of their research, complied with the objective instrument eg. accelerometer or metabolic analyzer.
The aim of the study was to assess the consumption frequency of selected groups of products with different fat content among youth and students. The 434 people from Wielkopolska region were investigated. High consumption frequency of poultry as well as milk and cottage cheese with lowered fat content was positive nutritional behaviour of questionnaires. Girls considerably more often than boys paid attention to fat content in everyday diet, what was confirmed by Spearman correlation ranks.
