This work evaluates effects of tablet fertilizers Silvamix, Silvamix Mg and Silvagen on height and diameter growth of a young plantation of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] and European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) after the third year of fertilizer application. The experiment was conducted on one experimental plot in the Low Tatra Mountains. The fertilizers were applied at a rate five tablets (50 g) per each tree, considering not treated trees as the control. The tablets were laid on the ground and thoroughly trodden into soil. ANOVA analysis did not reveal any significant effects of fertilizers on height and diameter growth of Norway spruce trees. The use of Silvagen resulted in significant effects on height growth of larch trees.
It is not clear to what extent trees growing on anthropogenic sites change their growth and biomass allocation to different organs. We assessed the aboveground biomass in a chronosequence of six Scots pine monocultures (between 6 and 20 years old) to examine how precisely the site-specific or control allometric equations may reflect the value of biomass accumulation and allocation in stands growing in harsh site conditions on the overlayer spoil heap made as a result of opencast brown coal mining. The site is characterized by poor edaphic and water conditions and nutrient deficiency. The control equations were developed from Scots pine stands growing on post-agricultural lands in the close vicinity of the spoil heap. We found that equation type significantly influenced results of predicted biomass accumulation for all biomass components studied (although results were only marginally significant for total aboveground biomass, P=0.08). Total aboveground biomass in younger stands (6–9 years old) estimated using site-specific equations was >40% higher and for older stands (17–20 years old) from 7 to 27% lower than estimated using equations developed for the control sites. Our study revealed that under harsh environmental conditions in spoil heaps, biomass of young Scots pine stands significantly differ from values calculated based on control equations developed for more fertile soils with better water conditions in the same region. The control biomass equations may not be suitable to estimate biomass accumulation in stands growing on infertile habitats with poor water conditions, if the control equations are developed for nearby stands but growing under better site conditions.
Treating apple trees and strawberry plants with methyl jasmonate (JA-Me) was investigated to see how the treatment affects the population size of the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch.). Both apple and strawberry were represented by two cultivars: Jester, Close and Aga, Kent, respectively. Each plant was infested with mites one day after being treated with a methyl jasmonate (JA-Me) solution. The negative influence of the JA-Me plant treatment on the growth of the subsequently colonized population of the two-spotted spider mite was observed both for strawberry plants and apple trees. A significant interaction (plant treatment x cultivar), however, was observed in the experiment conducted on apple trees. The population of mites feeding on the cv. Jester was not influenced by the JA-Me treatment. This lack of influence by JA-Me treatment was in contrast to what was found with the cultivar Close.
The same young cropping ‘Regina’ sweet cherry trees were foliar treated with prohexadione-calcium (Pro- Ca) in two consecutive years at a concentration of [ 125, 125 x 2, 250 ]-(A) and [ 250, 375, 500 ]-(B) mg ProCa l-1, respectively. The following year some trees from A-treatments were left untreated to observe carry-over effects (C). None of A-treatments influenced tree trunk, shoot extension and internode growth, whereas B-treatments reduced shoot extension and internode length, simultaneously increasing flower bud density, particularly by 500 mg ProCa l-1. There were no carry-over effects produced by C-trees, except some retardation in shoot extension. None of the treatments influenced the tree cropping level. Fruit diameter was reduced by A-treatments, but fruit shape (L/D ratio) and mass were reduced by treatments B, and such reduction was also exhibited by C-trees (residual effects).
Skład chemiczny formy młodocianej i dojrzałej bluszczu pospolitego (Hedera helix L.) a ukorzenianie sadzonek pędowych.
Assimilation and photosynthetic efficiency (maximal quantum yield) of young oaks were compared in coppice and standard sessile oak stands of comparable age (100 years) under different light intensity categories: under minimum light – ISF < 20%, low light – 20%30% during favourable and drought conditions. Measurements of maximal assimilation rates were performed at a constant temperature of the measurement block (20°C), a CO2 concentration of 400 μmol/l, flow 500 μmol/s and different light intensities: 0, 50, 250, 600, 1200 and 1800 μmol/m2s during three consecutive growing seasons (2012, 2013 and 2014). In every category at least 8 young naturally regenerated seedlings and sprouts of different coppice stools were measured. The quantum yield in optimal conditions in standards was highest in the category of closed canopy, while in coppices in medium light category. During severe drought in 2013 the drop in efficiency of standards was evident in all categories, while in coppices no differences in efficiency were observed between favourable 2012 and 2013 with expressed drought stress, proving the advantage of young coppices over standards in this particular light category. However, the beneficial effects of restoration coppicing are not guaranteed. It is our belief that in time such advantage might decrease; it would be therefore interesting to compare responses in time and define, when response abilities of both studied systems become equal.
Lucerne is a fodder perennial plant from the Fabaceae family grown under field conditions as feed for various groups of animals. This paper is concerned with the effect of electromagnetic stimulation of lucerne seed on the yield, yield parameters, and content of photosynthetic pigments in 1-2- and 5-6- year old lucerne plants. In 2012-2013 a field experiment was conducted with 5-6-year old lucerne, which was initiated in 2008. Another experiment was started in 2012 and conducted on 1-2-year old lucerne. The research material were seeds of hybrid lucerne (Medicago x varia T. Martyn) variety Radius and sowing lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) variety Ulstar. Before sowing the seeds were stimulated with the following combinations of physical factors: C – control (untreated sample), L – laser light with a surface power density of 6 mW cm–2 during 3-fold free fall, F – alternating magnetic field with an induction of 30 mT and exposure time of 30 s; L + F – laser light and magnetic field in the above doses. Electromagnetic stimulation contributed significantly to an increase in the number of shoots per 1 m2 as compared to the control. No significant difference in the weight of a single shoot was observed between the experimental combinations. 5- 6-year old lucerne was characterised by a statistically greater shoot mass as compared with 1-2-year old plants. Statistical analysis showed that the highest yield increase was observed for the samples where seeds were stimulated with laser light and both laser light and magnetic field, relative to the control. The best results concerning concentrations of chlorophyll a and b and carotenoids were observed for alternating magnetic field, where the increase amounted to 9, 11 and 13.0%, respectively, as compared to the control.

Garden orache (Atriplex hortensis L.) belongs to Chenopodiaceae family. Usable parts of this species are the young stems and leaves characterized by a high content of protein. The aim of the study was the estimation of the effect of sowing date (2nd and 3rd 10-days’ period of April, and 1st 10-days’ period of May) on the biological value of garden orache leaves. The experiment was conducted in 2008–2009. Chemical analyses of raw plant material (leaves of garden orache) included determination of the content of dry matter, total sugars, titratable acidity, total ash, crude fibre, total protein, nitrates, L-ascorbic acid, chlorophylls, carotenoids, total polyphenols and antioxidant activity. It was proved that sowing date had a significant effect on the content of dry matter, total ash, total protein, total sugars, L-ascorbic acid and antioxidant activity. On the base of obtained results it was proved that plants of garden orache grown at the latest date of sowing (1st 10-days’ period of May) were characterized by the highest biological value.
In experiments located in Prusy (Kraków voivodship) at Wierzbica (Katowice voivodship) at the end of vegetative growth in the fall 6 empiricaly determined features characterizing young red clever plants grown in pure stand and undersown in spring barley were analysed. These were following features refering to a single plant: fresh and dry weight, the length of tops and roots, diameter of the root crown and number of shoots. Based on these features 4 indirect indicators were constructed. In 1993-1994 total of 420 plants were analysed. For direct and indirect indicators means and standard deviations were callculated taking into account the influence of given year, location and method of sowing. Least squares and phenotypic correlations between investigated features were also evaluated. In 1994 average values for analysed plant features of red clever were higher than in 1993. The effect of location (of the experiment) was not visible. Better plants were formed when red clever was undersown in spring barley than when grown in pure stand (without the cover crop). Alls features measured directly showed very high variability between these features were observed. Correlation between the fresh and dry weight need to be emphasized. Also interactions between years and method of sowing, and between location and method of sowing turned out to be significant.
The morphology of fine roots ( 2 mm diameter) as well as fine and coarse root biomass was investigated in a chronosequence consisting of 6-, 9-, 11-, 15-, 17- and 20-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) stands growing on a reclaimed lignite mine spoil heap. Core method of destructive root sampling was used to establish whether root morphology and biomass varied with stand age in the upper 20 cm of soil. Fine root biomass ranged from 0.78 to 3.11 Mg ha-1, coarse root biomass ranged from 0.82 to 2.74 Mg ha-1, whereas root necromass ranged from 1.03 Mg ha-1 to 2.87 Mg ha-1 in the chronosequence studied. Fine root diameter as well as length, projected area, and surface area expressed per unit area increased significantly with stand age. Moreover, our study revealed that when stand age increases, specific fine root biomass increases, whereas specific root length and area decreases. The results support our hypothesis that stand age has an effect on standing fine root biomass and morphology.
Bacteria Pseudomonas aureofaciens, P. cepacia and P. fluorescens biovar I was tested againts fungus Diplodia mutila on stems of 2-year-old plants of European ash in greenhouse experiments. The interaction of bacteria and fungus was assessed on the base of length of necrotic lesions, caused by D. mutila, extended from point of inoculation. The strongest antagonistic effect was noted in the case of P. aureofaciens
The optimum time of weeding during four months following spring-planting of strawberries cultivar Senga Sengana was evaluated in conditions of Central Poland. Plantations were established every year of investigations, in the last week of March. The most important annual weeds infesteing experimental plots were: Capsella bursa-pastoris, Chenopodium album, Poa annua, Stellaria media and Amaranthus retroflexus. Yielding and growth of young plants were evaluated within four months after establishing the plantation. Weight of aboveground parts and roots of strawberry plants were similar on plots weeded once (4 or 8 weeks after planting) and on plots weeded three times (4, 8, and 12 weeks after planting). Newly planted strawberry plants yielded best on the plots where weeds were controlled once, 4 weeks after establishing the plantation.
This study was conducted in order to determine if inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and soil amendment with compost would enhance the tolerance of fountain grass to high level of salinity and alkalinity found in urban soils. AMF-inoculated and non-inoculated plants were planted in growing media non-amended and amended with compost and irrigated with water containing 3.3 g NaCl∙dm-3, 10.5 g Na2CO3∙dm-3, or 6.3 g CaCl2∙dm-3. Electrical conductivity (EC) of each watering solution was 6.3 S∙m-1. Plants were watered with salty waters every week until some leaves were necrotic. All the investigated salts decreased the decorative value of fountain grass and the percentage of root colonization by AMF. NaCl and Na2CO3 also decreased the dry matter of plants. Mycorrhization improve growth parameters and aesthetic value of fountain grass treated with all the tested salts and cultivated without compost supply. Compost supply was beneficial for fountain grass growth and quality if plants were cultivated in substrates unpolluted with NaCl, CaCl2, and Na2CO3.
Resztki korzeniowe jabłoni trzech odmian ‘Cortland’, ‘Elstar’ i ‘Szampion’ dodane do podłoża hamowały wzrost siewek ‘Antonówki’. Zgodnie z podjętym celem w pracy przeprowadzono identyfikację związków fenolowych występujących w korzeniach jabłoni, która wykazała obecność trzech związków fenolowych - florydzyny, naringeniny i kwasu chlorogenowego.
