The aim of this study was to assess the variation in levels of glucose and selected peptide hormones (insulin, leptin and ghrelin) in blood serum of young adults, depending on their nutritional status. Investigations were conducted with the participation of 18 persons, which were divided into three groups characterised by different nutritional status – BMI: <20 kg/m2, 20–25 kg/m2 and >25 kg/m2. Blood samples were collected from each examined person before they have eaten and next blood serum levels were determined for glucose, insulin, leptin, active and total ghrelin. Significant (p<0.05) inter-group differences were shown in leptin concentration, with the highest values of this parameter shown in the group of overweight persons (31.68±23.29 ng/cm3), while the lowest for individuals with BMI<20 kg/m2 (5.81±4.57 ng/cm3). Statistically significant correlations were found between BMI and leptin level (r=0.56, p<0.05), the share of fat mass and levels of insulin (r=0.52, p<0.05) and leptin (r=0.81, p<0.001), as well as the mean skinfolds thickness and the concentration of insulin (r=0.47, p<0.05) and leptin (r=0.63, p<0.01).
Background. Bakery products are a source of bioactive compounds, such as dietary fibre (DF), whose proper supply plays an important role in prevention of civilisation diseases. Objective. The aim of the present study was to determine total dietary fibre (TDF) content in bakery products and their contribution to TDF supply. Material and Methods. The determination of TDF content was performed using enzymatic-gravimetric method in 72 samples of six types of bakery products (wholemeal rye bread, wheat-rye bread, wheat-rye bread with grains, toast bread, crispbread, rolls) included in the young adults diet. Simultaneously, frequency of bakery products consumption and their contribution to TDF supply were assessed based on dietary interview questionnaires carried out among 224 students from Poland. Index of nutritional quality (INQ) of examined bakery products was calculated. Results. Our data indicate that average TDF content depended on the type of bakery products and ranged from 2.19 g/100 g in rolls to 11.80 g/100 g in wholemeal rye bread. All of the tested types of bakery products, except rolls, were a good source of fibre (INQ≥1), but the richest were wholemeal rye and wheat-rye with grains breads. Analysis of questionnaires data showed that bakery products were regularly consumed by 80% of young adults; however, most of whom preferred rolls. Consumption of bakery products covered current recommendations for dietary fibre in 27%. Daily intake of bakery products and TDF was not correlated with student’s BMI, however, women frequently consuming bread had a lower BMI than those who rarely ate it. Conclusion. Wholemeal rye and wheat-rye with grains breads are the rich source of TDF and they should be consumed by young adults in order to achieve the recommended TDF values.
There is not a region in the world untouched by the obesity epidemic. Once just a problem of wealthy nations, obesity now impacts countries at all economic levels. The night-eating syndrome (NES) consists of evening hyperphagia or nocturnal eating. However, it is not consistently related to elevated BMI and physical activity (Nolan et al., 2012). We have evidence that the prevalence of NES is higher among overweight-related people, than in a general community. Nevertheless, the exact relationship between this syndrome, physical activity and obesity remains unclear. The reasons for the discrepancies found in the literature include varying diagnostic criteria and a wide range of study population characteristics. The aim of our cross sectional study, that is part of VEGA project “Selected risk factors of obesity and its prevention by physical activity” No.1/1343/12, was to investigate the relationship between the night-eating pattern, physical activity (PA) and BMI on a sample of university freshmen and fresh-women (774 males / 1142 females) with a mean age of 21,46 years (SD = 2.33).We found positive association between eating late, physical activity and BMI. However, we recognized some differences between sexes in physical activity and eating habits.
W badaniach uczestniczyło 35 osób w wieku 60-88 lat i 33 osoby w przedziale wiekowym 20-30 lat (grupa kontrolna).
Background. High intake of carbohydrates, especially simple sugars, by young adults is associated with the consumption of highly processed foods. This leads to the development of overweight, obesity and various somatic diseases. Identification of factors contributing to the increased consumption of this product group is a very important area of research in the field of public health. Emotional state may be one of such factors. This research aims at analyzing the relationship between consumption of selected groups of foods rich in carbohydrates and actual affective states on the one hand, and relatively constant emotional features on the other hand, in case of young adults. Material and methods. The study was conducted among 120 young adults aged between 18 and to 38 years old. The questionnaire research method, combined with prospective evaluation of diets technique, was used in the study. Two research instruments were used in the research: the scale of positive and negative feelings and food intake frequency questionnaire FQQ. Results. Our research confirmed the relationship between both affective state and relatively constant emotional features with consumption of selected products groups containing carbohydrates, especially simple sugars and glycogen, both in case of women and men. The said relationship has been demonstrated both in case of positive and negative emotions. The study did not confirm the relationship between affective state and consumption of chocolate. Conclusions. The observed relations can be used in the prevention of first degree, taking into account gender differences. It can also be used in potential therapeutic interactions, especially in the field of proper nutrition.
To determine the growth rate and element contents of fingernails in young adults, 109 apparently healthy college students were recruited for determination. As a result, the average growth rate of the left thumb was 3.14±0.63 mm/month with significantly faster rates in male and taller participants. The concentrations for Ca, Na, P, K, and Mg were 701.1±274.8 µg/g, 452.3±353.9 µg/g, 33l.6±119.7 µg/g, 241.6±142.7 µg/g, and 111.1±43.5 µg/g, respectively. In general, the nail element levels were positively associated with growth rate. In conclusion, fingernail growth rate and the distribution of elements in fingernails are useful for assessing physical development and nutritional status.
The aim of the study was to assess the effect of nutritional status of the organism on the sensory specific satiety (SSS) in young adults and to determine the relationship of blood glucose concentration and SSS. The study was carried out on a set of 18 individuals (6 persons in each group with BMI values: <20, 20-25 and >25 kg/m2, respectively), which rated the pleasantness of foodstuffs with different sensory properties (milk chocolate, crackers, grapefruit and apples) before and after ad libitum consumption of milk chocolate. The SSS was observed in all the tested individuals, irrespective of their BMI value. No statistically significant correlation was found between the change in blood glucose concentration 2 minutes after the consumption of chocolate and the occurrence of SSS. A dependence between these parameters was found 60 min after chocolate consumption.
The aim of the study was to compare the results of body fat (in % and kg) measurements, obtained from 15 young non-obese adults (4 males, 11 females) with the use of different methods: Underwater Weighing (UWW) and Air-Displacement Plethysmography (BOD POD); Dual X-ray Absorbtiometry (DXA); Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), 4 Skinfolds measurements and BMI related formula, and to assess their correlation with UWW as a reference. The most accurate and best correlated with the reference were BOD POD and DXA. BIA gave results similar to and correlated well with UWW. Results of anthropometric methods correlated less with UWW, but mean values were not significantly different from the reference.
Autoimmune myocarditis develops after the presentation of heart-specific antigens to autoaggressive CD4+ T cells and after inflammation has infiltrated the tissues. To shed light on global changes in the gene expression of autoimmune myocarditis and to gain further insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying the genesis of myocarditis, we conducted a comprehensive microarray analysis of mRNA using an experimental mouse autoimmune myocarditis model via immunization with α-myosin heavy chain-derived peptides. Of over 39,000 transcripts on a high density oligonucleotide microarray, 466 were under-expressed and 241 over-expressed by ≥ 1.5-fold compared with the controls in BALB/C mouse with autoimmune myocarditis. In this paper, we list the top 50 up-regulated genes related to the immune response. These altered genes encode for leukocyte-specific markers and receptors, the histocompatibility complex, cytokines/receptors, chemokines/receptors, adhesion molecules, components of the complement cascade, and signal transduction-related molecules. Interestingly, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) such as MMP-3 and MMP-9 were up-regulated, as further revealed by the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry assays. This indicates that MMPs may act as major regulators of the cytokine profile. Together, these findings provide new insight into the molecular events associated with the mechanism of the autoimmune genesis of myocarditis.
The three age groups of people from Warsaw: children, young adults and elderly people were examined for the prevalence of infection with Pneumocystis jirovecii. Nested PCR was used to amplify fragment of mitochondrial large subunit rRNA of the fungus in samples of oropharyngeal swabs. Nineteen (12.8%) of the 148 examined samples were positive for DNA of P. jirovecii. The samples collected from children were more often positive than the samples from young adults (p = 0.003) or from both groups of adults (p = 0.0029). Moreover, among adults (n = 99) proportion of infected women (n = 6; 12.5%) was significantly higher than men (n = 1; 2%). Results of the research confirm the high prevalence of Pneumocystis infection in children and indirectly point out to children as a possible source of infection for older people.
