In 2004–2006 an experiment was carried out to evaluate selected quality traits of yield of ten cultivars of beetroot with storage roots of different shapes (flattened, round and elongated). At the end of the vegetation season Rocket cultivar (of elongated root) was characterized by the longest root of the smallest diameter. Whereas, Egipski cultivar was characterized by the shortest root, but of the greatest diameter. Rocket cultivar was also characterized by the highest percentage of storage roots weight in the whole plants weight (83.1%). Content of macroelements was significantly dependent on evaluated cultivars (except Ca and Mg in 2005, when differences between cultivars were not significant).
A special role in improving soil fertility is ascribed to green manures. Organic manuring can also influence on the quantity and quality of vegetable yield. The secondary effect of winter catch crops (VV – hairy vetch, TR – white clover, SC – rye, LM – Italian ryegrass, BRT – turnip rape) and weed control methods on the yielding, biometric parameters of ears and selected components of nutritive value in sweet corn were examined. The effects of an application of green manures were compared to the effect of farmyard manure (FYM ) – 30 t·ha-1 – and control treatment without organic manure (NOM). Two methods of weed control were used: hand weeding and a mixture of herbicides Mustang 306 SE (florasulam + 2.4 D) + Titus 25 WG (rimsulfuron). Cultivation of sweet corn after FYM and VV most beneficially affected the crop’s yield performance, ear weight, kernel weight per ear and sugars content. Ears were the longest when harvested in FYM and VV plots and NOM whereas ear fulfillment was the best in FYM and TR plots. Ear diameter was the greatest for sweet corn cultivated after FYM, LM and BRT. The highest dry matter content was determined in kernels of corn following LM and protein content after LM, VV and TR. Ascorbic acid content increased after all the catch crops compared with FYM and NOM. When weeds had been chemically controlled, corn produced larger ears which, however, had less kernel rows compared with hand weeded plants.
In Poland nearly 40% of land under agricultural use is characterised by a progressing deficit of copper available to plants. Inventory studies revealed that 25% of rapeseed plantations are undernourished with this component. The objective of the study was to estimate the yield-forming effects of foliar and soil fertilisation of rapeseed with copper, to identify the optimum dose of Cu for the crop species, and to compare the effects of the two methods of application on the quality of the seeds. The study comprised two three-year strict field experiments, in which pre-sowing fertilisation of rapeseed with copper was applied at rates of 4, 8 and 12 kg Cu⋅ha-1, as well as foliar spraying at the optimum dose of 250 Cu g⋅ha-1 in the phase of closed bud. The experiments were set up on light soils of acid and light acid reaction and with a low or medium content of available copper. Significant increases in rapeseed yields, compared to the control treatment (without Cu), were obtained in treatments fertilised to the soil with doses of 8 and 12 kg Cu⋅ha-1 and in the treatment with foliar spraying. In plants from treatments without copper fertilisation, insufficient levels of the content of this component were found. Sufficient copper nutrition of plants caused a significant increase in yields of rape seeds. In some of the treatments, there was a tendency for the copper content in seeds to increase favourably, especially in the case of foliar application and of the higher copper doses applied to the soil. Also, some cases of increased oil content in seeds were recorded, even by several percent compared to seeds from treatments without Cu fertilisation. With the existing copper deficit in soils in Poland, fertilisation of rapeseed with this component appears to be crucial.
The paper presents the results of 3-year pot experiment, aimed at defining the impact of soil moisture on selected biometric characteristics, dry matter yield and yield quality. The research covered four orchard grass cultivars, ‘Amera’, ‘Astera’, ‘Bepro’, ‘Potomac’, different in earliness, cultivated under four field water capacities (80%, 65%, 50% and 35% FWC). Tillering, leaf blade area and dry matter yield were most considerably enhanced by moderate soil moistures, 65% and 50% FWC. However the reaction to soil moisture differed across cultivars. ‘Amera’ yielded significantly highest under 50% FWC, ‘Astera’ yielded similarly under 65% and 80% FWC, ‘Bepro’ under 65% and 50%, while the highest yield of ‘Potomac’ was obtained under 65% FWC. ‘Astera’ was most prolific, developed the greatest number of shoots and the greatest leaf blade assimilation area. The soil moistures affected the contents of crude protein and water-soluble carbohydrates; the grater the soil moisture the lower the conte.
Spaghetti squash is an interesting novelty in Poland. Popularization of spaghetti squash cultivation in our country requires development of agricultural recommendations. The size and the quality of yield is highly affected by the sowing date and plant population. The paper presents the results of a four-year study on the effect of the sowing date (5, 15 and 25 May) and plant spacing (1 × 0.6 m, 1 × 0.8 m and 1 × 1 m, ie. 16,668, 12,500 and 10,000 plants per ha) on the yield of spaghetti squash (‘Makaronowa Warszawska’ and ‘Pyza’) under the soil and climatic conditions of central-eastern Poland. The highest yield per hectare and the largest number of marketable fruits per plant was obtained while sowing on 5 May. Delaying the sowing date resulted in a decrease in the yield per hectare and of the number of marketable fruits per plant, although the average weight of a marketable fruit sown on 15 and 25 May did not significantly differ in comparison to sowing on 5 May. Increasing the spacings between plants from 1 × 0.6 m to 1 × 1 m resulted in decreasing the yield per hectare, but the number of marketable fruits per plant was larger. Plant spacing did not have a significant effect on the average weight of a marketable fruit. The yield per hectare for the ‘Pyza’ was larger in comparison to the ‘Makaronowa Warszawska’. The number of marketable fruits per plant did not significantly differ, but the weight of the ‘Pyza’ fruit was higher.
Foliar feeding of plants is an important supplementation of soil fertilization in vegetable cultivation. Foliar-fertilized plants deliver high yields of good quality at lower rates of mineral fertilization. In horticultural practice foliar fertilization is also recommended as the most effective method of supplying plants with nutrients under deficiency conditions. An experiment was established to evaluate an effect of foliar application with Florovit and combination Ekolist-Warzywa+Urea on the yield quality of six large-fruit melon cultivars (‘Pacstart’, ‘Yupi’, ‘Gattopardo’, ‘Polydor II’, ‘Seledyn’, ‘Legend’) cultivated in the climatic conditions of central-eastern Poland. The total yield was achieved from Florovit and Ekolist-fertilized plants did not differ significantly. A higher total yield was achieved from Florovit-fertilized plants compared with control object. ‘Yupi’ was characterised by higher total yields compared with the other cultivars. The greatest fruit number per 1 m2 was set by ‘Gattopardo’. On the basis of the results obtained it was found that, due to the highest share of marketable fruit, ‘Yupi’ is the cultivar recommended for cultivation under the growing conditions of central-eastern Poland. ‘Seledyn’ was gave at least unripe fruit whereas ‘Pacstart’ produced the lowest share of disease-affected fruit. An application of the foliar fertilizers reduced the total sugar and monosaccharides content in melon fruit. Regardless of the kind of foliar feeding, most dry matter in the fruit was produced by ‘Pacstart’, total sugar and monosaccharides by ‘Yupi’ and ascorbic acid by ‘Legend’.
Stem canker of brassicas, also known as blackleg is the most damaging disease of many Brassicaceae. The disease is caused by Leptosphaeria maculans (Desm.) Ces et de Not. and L. biglobosa sp. nov., Shoemaker & Brun, which coexist in plants and resulting in disease symptoms and decreased yield, quantity and quality of cultivated vegetables and oilseed rape. The paper presents taxonomic relationships between these coexisting pathogen species, describes particular stages of their life cycles, summarizes the differences between the species, and reviews methods for their identification.
Recent years have been marked with a more common use of mineral fertilizers comprising marine algal extracts in horticultural production. Seaweed extracts are reported to possess, among others, biostimmulatory potential that improves yield growth and its quality as well as promotes plant resistance to adverse environmental agents. The marine alga processing technologies facilitate the extraction of active substances valuable for plant crops as stimulants for a number of plant physiological processes. The substances can be incorporated into both, soil or foliar applied fertilizers. The present research objective was to assess the influence of N Pro technology and Seactiv complex based on marine algal extracts on apple tree ‘Szampion’ growth, yield quantity and quality. The experimental material comprised ‘Szampion’ apple trees grafted on M.26 stock, the trees were aged 10 years at the experiment onset. The study aimed at evaluation of growth, yield quantity and quality of ‘Szampion’ apple trees fertilized according to two following programs. The measurements performed showed that introduction of the fertilization programs based on marine algal extracts had significant effect on total yield, one fruit weight, firmness and sugar extract content in apple tree ‘Szampion’ fruits. It was found that the N Pro technology and Seactiv complex had significantly beneficial influence on the percentage of big fruits, i.e. above 7.5 cm diameter and marketable yield in each experimental year. Cropping efficiency coefficient (CEC) of ‘Szampion’ apple trees fertilized according to N Pro technology and Seactiv base was significantly higher compared to control solely in 2008, in the other research years the differences were insignificant. The fertilization program based on marine algal extracts had positive influence on the ‘Szampion’ apple tree`s annual increments and each year the trees under N Pro and Seactive complex fertilization technology produced higher increments as against control; the differences in the last research year were significant. The N Pro technology and Seactiv base had positive impact on ‘Szampion’ apple tree leaf surface area, significant influence was observed in the second and third research year.
Hamburg parsley is a vegetable that can overwinter in the field. One of the factors influencing surviving winter by plants is the selection of cultivar. In the experiment the relationship between winter hardiness of plants and the changes taking place in the structure of the yield obtained in spring was examined, in comparison to the crop harvested before winter, and Hamburg parsley cultivar. From among the plants of examined cultivars the winter conditions were best survived by ‘Bubka’, ‘Ołomuńcka’ and ‘Vistula’. The yield harvested in spring, as compared to that obtained in autumn, did not depend of the plants’ winter hardiness. Postponing the harvest term to spring decreased the quantities of obtained yields. From among the examined cultivars, only ‘Vistula’, ‘Eagle’ and ‘Ołomuńcka’ plants formed larger marketable yields of roots in spring. In the yield collected in spring there were more I class marketable roots (Ø30–60 mm), and less small ones (Ø< 20 mm). The participation of bifurcated and rotted roots was also greater. Overwintering of plants caused the decrease of leaf yield quantity, with simultaneous improvement of marketable quality.
W dwuletnim doświadczeniu wazonowym, w latach 2005-2006, badano wpływ trzech wzrastających dawek mączki zwierzęcej na plonowanie i skład mineralny kostrzewy łąkowej. Mączkę mięsno-kostną z udziałem hydrolizatu z pierza i krwi zastosowano jednorazowo, przedsiewnie w 2005 roku, mieszając z glebą w dawkach: 0,25, 0,5 i 1,0% w stosunku do 10 kg gleby na wazon. Działanie mączki porównywano z nawożeniem NPK (obiekt kontrolny) na wazon: azotem w ilości 1 g (w dwóch dawkach: przedsiewnie i pogłównie), fosforem 0,5 i potasem 1 g przedsiewnie.
