With regard to a high silting rate of small water reservoirs, these reservoirs are characterized by a short life time. During an operation period of 10 to 20 years their capacity is often reduced by 50 or more percent. In consequence it intensity of the silting process these reservoirs require frequent desilting. Intensity of this process may by, however, restricted or reduced by proper location of designed small reservoir. In the case of existing water reservoirs a change of operation or water fl ow conditions through the reservoir may contribute to decrease of silting rate. In consequence of desiltation works of the reservoir at Zesławice an side assistant reservoir supplied with the water of the river Dłubnia from a common water feeding point was built. After renovation of the main water reservoir the assistant side reservoir was included into operation. On the basis of measurement results of silting a decrease of silting of the main reservoir was stated. By directing a part of water to the assistant reservoir the water conditions changed and this caused reduction of load quantity entering the main reservoir. The elaborated regression relations of the change of the silting degree during operation of these reservoirs permitted to prove reduction of silting intensity. Basing upon these relations the change of silting degree of the main and assistant reservoir was determined in particular years of operation. According to Hartung’s (1959) criterion silting of a reservoir in 80% causes its exclusion from operation. It was proved that before desilting the 80% silting degree would take place after 20 years of operation.
