Aceria absinthii (Liro, 1943) and Paraphytoptus paradoxus Nalepa, 1896, are new species for the fauna of Serbia. The descriptions of both species are supplemented, with males described for the first time. A. absinthii causes galls on the lower surface of leaves, whereas P. paradoxus is vagrant on leaves of wormwood.
The chemical composition of worm wood Artemisia annua L. (Astraceae), a medicinal plant, was studied by gas chromatography and gas chromatographymass spectrometry (GC-MS). About 60 compounds were identified, from which the major compounds were erythritol (50.30%), camphore (7.25%), pinocarveol (4.13%) and diethoxyethane (2.18%). The effect of crude extract on deterrency was maximal in 1000 μL/L treatment (only 4.66 ±1.05 insects were attracted to treated food) compared to control (12.6 ±0.96) The growth regulatory effect showed that 1600 μL/L treatment variously affected the weight of larvae, pupae and adult (0.48 ±0.003, 2.17 ±0.02 and 1.31 ±0.015, respectively) and finally the ovicidal effect and the number of adults appearing in F1 were similarly affected (38.5 ±1.7 and 33.75 ±2.31), comparing to control (99.25 ±1.727 and 92.5 ±1.35). The present result and previous results on this plant species indicate that it can be a good candidate for controlling stored product insects.
Plant derived extracts and phytochemicals have long been a subject of research in an effort to develop alternatives to conventional insecticides but with reduced health and environmental impact. In the present study, the aphid settling deterrent activity of extracts obtained from garlic (Allium sativum L.), wormwood (Artemisia absinthium L.) and tansy (Tanaceum vulgare L.) against peach potato aphid (Myzus persicae [Sulz.]) was investigated. The settling of M. persicae on host plant leaves was strongly deterred by soap 1%, soap 4%, Bioczos Forte 2% + soap 1%, Bioczos 1% + tansy extract 1%. Their effect was observed after 1 hour aphid had got access to the plants and it lasted until the end of the experiment, i.e. 24 hours after application. After 24 hours, aphid settling was deterred by the following combinations of extracts: Bioczos 2%, Bioczos 2% + soap 1%, Bioczos 5%, Bioczos 5% + soap 1%, Bioczos 1% + wormwood extract 1%, Bioczos 1% + wormwood extract 1% + soap, tansy extract 1% + wormwood extract 1% and tansy extract 1% + wormwood extract 1% + soap 1%.
The aim of the study was to compare the content and composition of essential oil in wormwood herbs collected from eight natural sites in the Mrągowo administrative district. The raw material was harvested in the first ten days of August, separately from the plants being at vegetative and generative stage of development. The content of essential oil in the herb of flowering plants ranged from 0.90 to 1.45%, and in the herb of plants at the vegetative stage of development - from 0.60 to 0.94%. The main constituents of the essential oil were: sabinyl acetate (6 populations), sabinyl acetate and chrysanthenyl acetate (1 population), sabinyl acetate and β-thujone (1 population). In the essential oil of plants growing in Kol. Dluzec only some traces of β-thujone were found. All investigated essential oils were characterized by a relatively high content of cineol.
