Over 2001-2003 there was researched an effect of various tillage methods on the reduction of weed infestation of a long-term fallow. The number of germinating weeds was analysed; the weeds had been obtained from a few-time-mixed soil samples collected from the top soil layers under the conditions of direct sowing, traditional ploughing, multistage ploughing and ploughing with a skim coulter. The results were compared with the abundance of weeds per 1 m2 under field conditions. The log-linear analysis showed a considerable effect of weather conditions (years) on the abundance of germinating weeds in 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-25 cm layers. Multistage ploughing and ploughing with a skim coulter significantly decreased the number of germinating weeds in the top soil layers, as compared with the traditional plough and direct sowing. After two years of varied tillage methods considerably lower weed abundance was recorded for all the tillage variants, as compared with the results.
The research was conducted on weed infestation of potato crops in fields with different soils in several (9) municipalities in the Zamość region in 2014–2015 were compared with the results of research carried out in 1991–1995. The phytosociological photos were created by Braun-Blanquet’s method, of which 87 representative images were selected for analysis. The photos were taken on three complexes of agricultural suitability of soils: good wheat, defective wheat and good rye. Generally identified 55 species of weeds (43 annual and biennial and 12 perenial). The cultivation of potato less were infested on the complex good wheat and defective than good rye. One photo in the first research period (1991–1995) accounted from 45 to 52 species, while in the second period (2014–2015) from 41 to 49 species. In potato canopy dominated nitrophilous species: Chenopodium album, Echinochloa crus-galli, Matricaria maritima subsp. inodora, Stellaria media, Galinsoga parviflora, Elymus repens and Equisetum arvense. In general, irrespective of the soil complex, the resumption of testing after 20 years in selected locations in various municipalities of the Zamość region indicates is very limited of certain taxa, such as Galeopsis tetrahit, Veronica persica, Papaver rhoeas, Avena fatua, Sinapis arvensis, Spergula arvensis, Fallopia convolvulus and Polygonum persicaria, in addition to Galium aparine and Stellaria media on poorer soil complexes. An increase in infestation of potato was noted for Chenopodium album, Echinochloa crus-galli, Setaria pumila, Anthemis arvensis, Atriplex patula and Lamium purpreum. Among perennial taxa, crops are infested in the highest degree by Elymus repens and Equisetum arvense.
Soybean cultivation is becoming more and more popular in many countries, including Poland, due to the high nutritional value of its seeds, its resistance to diseases and pests, as well as lower propensity to lodging compared to other legumes. Under the climatic conditions of Poland, soybean yield is largely dependent on weather conditions in a particular growing season, primarily temperature and rainfall. Studies on the effect of tillage systems used for soybean cropping under the climatic conditions of Poland are scarce. This proves the need to continue such research. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) on yield, weed infestation and seed qualitative composition of the ‘Mazowia’ soybean cultivar grown under the conditions of the Lublin Upland. A field experiment was carried out in the period of 2009-2012 at the Czesławice Experimental Farm (51°18′23″N 22°16′2″E). In 2010 the soybean plantation was terminated due to adverse weather conditions and related inhibited plant emergence. The experiment was set up on loess-derived grey-brown podzolic soil as a split-block design in four replicates. The present study showed that the soybean seed yield obtained under conventional tillage conditions was higher by 14.6% compared to that obtained under no-tillage. A higher plant density after emergence and before harvest as well as a higher plant height were found in the conventional tillage treatment. The protein, oil and fibre content in soybean seed was significantly affected only by weather conditions in particular growing seasons. A higher weed weight and richer floristic composition of weeds were found under no-tillage conditions in relation to conventional tillage.
The aim of the study was to analyze segetal weeds present in spring barley against the background of changes in pluviothermal conditions observed over the last 20 years (1993–2012) at the Field Experimental Station of the Institute of Plant Protection – National Research Institute in Winna Góra, Poland. Based on the mean value of the Sielianinov hydrothermal coefficient for the three months of spring vegetation, i.e., April, May, and June, three classes of pluvio-thermal conditions (very dry, moderately dry, humid) were distinguished. The phytosociological stability of weed species analyzed during the study period was assessed and the Shannon–Wiener index of species diversity in the communities and the Simpson dominance index were calculated for segetal weeds present in spring barley. In the 20-year period analyzed, Chenopodium album and Viola arvensis exhibited the highest phytosociological stability and the highest abundance in the spring barley crop. Over the years analyzed, the dry spring vegetation periods were characterized by significant precipitation deficiency between late April and mid-June. In the years with favorable meteorological conditions, the weed species diversity measured by the Shannon–Wiener diversity index was higher than in the years with precipitation deficiency. In the very dry years, the species dominance index in the spring vegetation period was higher than in the wet years. The yield loss caused by weed infestation in the very dry years was higher by 6% as compared to moderately dry and wet years.
A field experiment was conducted in the years 2002- 2004 at the Zawady Agricultural Experimental Station (52o06’ N; 22o06’ E), belonging to the University of Podlasie in Siedlce, Poland. The investigated factors were two soil tillage systems (traditional and reduced) and seven methods of weed control in potato canopies with herbicide application. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of tillage systems and weed control methods on the weed species composition and weed density. Tillage systems, weed control methods and atmospheric conditions prevailing in the study years significantly varied weed infestation of potato canopies at the beginning of vegetation and before tuber harvest. The lowest number of weeds, compared to the control treatment, was recorded in the treatments in which chemical and mechanical weed control had been applied. The treatments with the traditional tillage system also showed lower weed infestation than those in which simplifications had been applied.
An investigation was done on the effect of different types of organic mulches that were applied in form of straw to the soil mulching process, on the weed infestation, number, and fresh mass of weeds in broccoli cv. Milady F1 (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica Plenck) and tomato cv. Polfast F1 (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) grown under polypropylene fibre as a covering, or grown without a covering. The different types of organic straw mulches were: rye (Secale cereale L.), corn (Zea mays L.), rape (Brassica napus L. subsp. napus), and buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.). All the organic mulches were applied at a dose of 10 t/ha. The effect of the mulches was compared to a control plot which had no mulch. The type of organic mulch applied to the soil mulching process influenced species composition, number, and fresh mass of weeds. This effect could be the result of the properties of the mulch (colour, structure, etc.) or the allelopathic effect on the germination and growth of individual weeds species. Irrespective of the investigated factors, 24 and 25 weeds species, respectively, were observed immediately after cover removal and before broccoli and tomato harvest. In the first date of estimation Chenopodium album L., Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv., Fallopia convolvulus (L.) Á. Löve, Stellaria media (L.) Vill., and Viola tricolor L. dominated, however, before the vegetables were harvested Ch. album, V. tricolor, Veronica arvensis L., and E. crus-galli dominated. An application of polypropylene fibre contributed to an increase in the number and fresh mass of weeds in both vegetables in the first date of estimation (after cover removal). During this period, vegetables cannot compete with weeds. It is important to note, though, that before the vegetables were harvested, a decrease was found in the number and fresh mass of weeds in the covered plots. The most efficient weed limiter, both after cover removal and also before the broccoli and tomatoes were harvested, was buckwheat and rye straw, respectively.

The object of investigations were mountain soils derived from various parent rocks which were fallowed during five and ten years, in comparison to arable soils. The aim of the research was to characterise physical properties of the fallows and adjoining arable fields. The obtained results point to higher values of porosity, bulk density as well as content of total carbon of fallows in comparison to arable soils. On the analysed fallows far higher growth of weed with high contribution of many-year species was found,
The present paper presents the results of research carried out over 1998-2001 which aimed at defining the after-effect of undersown intercrops and straw on the degree of weed infestation and yielding of winter triticale. The experiment involved two factors: I - fertilization with undersown intercrop (control, manure, birdsfoot trefoil, birdsfoot trefoil + Italian ryegrass, Italian ryegrass); II - potato fertilization with barley straw (without straw, with straw). In the first year after organic fertilization table potatoes were cultivated, and in the second year - `Tornado´ cultivar winter triticale. The lowest weed infestation was recorded in the field of winter triticale for the forecrop fertilized with a mixture of birdsfoot trefoil with Italian ryegrass. Potato fertilization with undersown intercrops and barley straw showed a positive after-effect on the grain yield, grain yield structure components, straw yield and total protein yield of winter triticale grain. The highest grain yields, of the highest grain yield structure components values, straw yield, as well as total protein yield of grain were obtained from winter triticale cultivated after potato, under which a mixture of birdsfoot trefoil with Italian ryegrass and barley straw were ploughed-in.
