Mapping and assessment of erosion risk is an important tool for planning of natural resources management, allowing researchers to propose modifi cation in land-use properly and implement more sustainable management strategies in the long-term. The Tapacurá river catchment, located in Pernambuco State, Northeastern Brazil, is one of the planning units for management of water resources of Recife Metropilitan Region (RMR), and it is divided into 12 sub-basins. The objective of this study is to evaluate the spatial variability of vegetal cover and sediment yield in this basin through remote sensing and GIS techniques. Maps of the erosivity (R), erodibility (K), topographic (LS), cover-management (C) and support practice (P) factors were derived from the digital elevation model (DEM), climate database, and soil and NDVI maps, taking into account information available in the literature. In order to validate the simulation process, Sediment Delivery Ratio (SDR) was estimated. The obtained NDVI map showed vegetation loss during the analyzed period, indicating a distinct contrast between loss and gains of vegetation index. The vegetation and sediment yield mapping showed to be a useful tool for environmental monitoring and management, which can provide satisfactory results when jointly used. The results suggest a mean SDR around 0.9 and estimate the sediment yield as 23.98 ton/ha/month.
In order to evaluate the effects of different slope lengths (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 m) and different vegetation coverage ratios (20%, 45%, 60%, and 90%) on the mechanisms of nutrient loss and runoff producing processes, we have conducted 14 simulated rainfall experiments. The results show that N and P loss are decided by the concentration and the runoff volume, but when the amounts of N and P in topsoil are small, their loss content mostly depends on runoff volume. Dissolved nitrogen is the main form in the nitrogen loss, while nitrate nitrogen is the main component in dissolved nitrogen, but the proportion in the total nitrogen gradually decreases with slope length increasing or with the increase of vegetation cover; the main form of phosphorus losses is particulate phosphorus, and the excessive sediment-bound nutrient loss released into water might cause secondary pollution of an aquatic environment.
The article presents the results of research conducted in order to create nomographs allowing assessment of slope stability. The proposed recommendations involve graphs and charts, where factor of safety (FOS) is computed in according to six different characteristics: slope height and angle, slope surface vegetation cover, applied surcharge, position of water table, soil mechanical conditions. For the purpose of the research several geotechnical models and approaches were used and became a basis for developing simplifi ed method of predicting the failure of natural and engineered slopes. The advantage of the solutions presented is their simplicity of use; as further FOS calculations are not required during the complex assessment of slope stability.
The montane glades in the Polish Carpathians were created centuries ago and have lasted mainly as a result of mowing and grazing. The observed abandonment of traditional methods of tillage in the last century led to adverse changes in vegetation cover, including a decrease in floristic diversity and the disappearance of many plant species and associations. One of a rare mountain taxa in Poland is the alpine globeflower Trollius altissimus Crantz. The investigations were carried out between June and September 2014 in the Hala Długa glade (Gorce Mts.) at two 36 m² plots: extensively grazed (P1) and unmanaged (P2). Light intensity, abundance and density of individuals and ramet clusters were significantly greater in the extensively grazed plot, whereas height of plant canopy, length of basal leaf petioles, width of leaf lamina, number and length of generative stems, number of flowers and follicles achieved higher values in the unmanaged plot. The structure of developmental stages and number of basal leaves did not differ remarkably between the studied sites. Also, the soil properties in both plots were very similar. The studies show that extensive sheep grazing has a positive influence on Trollius altissimus. In the studied locality such management contributes to the gradual spreading of this species. However, too intensive pasturage might eliminate this species as it has never been observed in any of the permanently grazed patches in the vicinity.
Vegetation structure and food availability can significantly modify the composition of farmland avifauna. In the 2006 breeding season we tested the effect of food resources (density of epigeic invertebrates) in two local habitats on foraging of farmland birds. We have been exploring how intensively the foraging birds utilise meadow and pasture habitats in an extensively used farmland area of Central Poland. Two plots were selected in adjacent meadow and pasture each of 0.18 ha where bird and invertebrate sampling was conducted in May 2006. We set five Barber traps active for two weeks at each plot to survey for the epigeic invertebrates which form the main part of farmland birds’ diet. In total, we trapped over two thousands invertebrate individuals (mainly Aranea, Coleoptera and Hymenoptera). Visual observations of foraging birds were performed from an elevated observation point located at a 25 m distance from the edge of the plots. We recorded 191 observations of foraging by 12 bird species (mainly Sturnus vulgaris L., Upupa epops L., Cuculus canorus L., Motacilla alba L., Corvus corone L., C. monedula L., Pica pica L.). We found that overall invertebrate density at the meadow was 2.5-fold higher than at the pasture. This was also the case with the invertebrate groups that were preyed upon by the birds. We recorded however a 10-fold higher frequency of foraging of birds at the pasture, as compared to the meadow. Preference of a bird species for foraging at the pasture was inversely correlated with its body mass. We discuss the importance of pastures for the preservation of farmland avifauna.
The influence of submerged macrophytes on composition, abundance and distribution of epiphytic and benthic chironomids was investigated in five lakes differing in the development of vegetation cover. Studied lakes represented three types, classified according to the concept of Alternative Stable States as: macrophyte dominated MD (dense vegetation), phytoplankton-macrophyte dominated PMD (sparse, patchy vegetation) and phytoplankton dominated PD (lack of submerged vegetation). Both zoocenosis responded differently to the changes in macrophyte cover. The density and biomass of benthic midges (density and biomass per m² of bottom surface) were visibly higher in the patchy vegetated lakes; the abundance of epiphytic chironomids did not show any regularity. The species composition of epiphytic chironomids differed visibly between particular lake types, changed with the decrease of macrophyte cover. The composition of benthic midges was similar in all lake types. The studies showed a strong dependence of the proportion of epiphytic to benthic chironomids on the cover of macrophytes. In MD lakes the phytophilous midges were more abundant than benthic; in PMD lakes we observed the opposite pattern.
Numerous environmental factors are confirmed to have significant influence on the habitat choice of invertebrates and thus on the assemblage structure. In dry, sandy grasslands the vegetation cover and height are assumed to be the most important factors in shaping the distribution of spiders and true bugs. The present study was carried out at a natural sand dune area in the Kiskunság region of the Hungarian Great Plain. Two adjacent sand dunes and the dune valley between them were sampled using a transect consisting of pitfall traps. The traps were arranged in 4 parallel transects, running from the sand dune top through the dune valley to the adjacent sand dune. Each row consisted of 40 traps, three meters apart. The effect of microhabitat parameters on the species richness and abundance of invertebrate assemblages were tested with linear regressions with forward selection procedure. A total number of 1447 spider and 1580 true-bug individuals of 58 and 55 species were collected, respectively. The mean number of spider species along the transects was 10.5 ± 3.7 and 9.8 ± 3.0 for true bugs. Although our data did not show a significant effect of the plant species number on species richness and abundance of the two studied taxa along this gradient, the results of the canonical correspondence analysis and the Mantel test emphasized the importance of the total coverage and vegetation composition on the distribution of invertebrate species. The correspondence analysis and the multivariate ANOVA revealed different spider and true-bug assemblages on the two slopes (multivariate ANOVA: Araneae: F = 3.609, P <0.001, Heteroptera: F = 5.248, P <0.001), possibly due to the more dense and diverse vegetation on the north facing slope, which is presumably brought about by the different insolation and moisture conditions of the slopes.
As a result of a bryological exploration carried out in 2009 within the Kocioł Małego Stawu glacial cirque a number of 90 moss species was recorded. Together with fragmentary notes collected in 1999, 2003 and 2007 the contemporary moss flora concerns 105 species (the list of mosses with a brief description of habitats is provided). 88% of them (92 species) were noted on no more than 25% of the plots (with 32 found exclusively once) and only 13 species were noted more frequently. The latter are widespread within the whole range of altitude and exposition as well as in the majority of plant communities what makes bryophyte vegetation in the glacial cirque rather monotonous in appearance. Species recorded showed visible substrata specialization: 80 taxa (76% including 32 sporadic species) occurred only on one type of substratum. Rocks and boulders appeared to be the richest in the number of species 34 species (with 28 occurring exclusively on this substratum) and coniferous litter and rotten leaves of grasses and ferns 24 species (17 exclusive). Three plant communities were the richest in species: high subalpine grasslands of Crepido-Calamagrostietum villosae community 48, spruce forest of Piceetum hercynicum community 41 and dwarf-pine thickets Pinetum mugo sudeticum community 40. The number of species noted in other plant communities was less than 30. The richest in species phytocoenoses occupied the most area within the glacial cirque and they showed rather high floristic similarity. The comparison of bryo-floristic data from two periods: 18691998 and 1999 2009, showed essential changes in species richness and composition the list of mosses increased by 69 taxa but 50% of the previously reported flora was not refound. The most of species reported for the first time at the beginning of the 21th century were noted in the Karkonosze Mts just in the 19th century on the natural sites. Synanthropization process manifesting in appearance of hemerophilous species, not occurring naturally in the Karkonosze Mts, is limited to the surroundings of the Schronisko Samotnia chalet and strictly associated with mortar or concrete usage. Ruderal species were not observed in other parts of the glacial cirque. It suggests that tourist usage of the area has not influenced on floristic composition of the Kocioł Małego Stawu glacial cirques moss layer.
The vegetation cover of the Głuszec stream valley was investigated. The article presents a list of 294 recorded species of vascular plants from 65 families and, also, 47 plant associations from nine classes, from three dynamic vegetation circles: Carici elongatae-Alnetum, Fraxino-Alnetum and Querco- -Ulmetum minoris. Six types of vegetation complexes were documented. Their phytocoenotic structure was shown in a table containing 􀍻􀎂 relevés made in sigmassociations. The preliminary results of research on the dynamics of Dactylorhiza incarnata population, occurring in one of meadow complexes, were presented. The Głuszec stream valley was recognised as the region of exceptional natural plant cover within the city of Poznań and proposed to be incorporated into the green network of the Poznań Agglomeration. The valley was also included in the agri-environmental program. An active protection of grassland ecosystems is achieved by adhering to the requirements of this program and additional recommendations of an expert botanist.
