Early in the 1990s the Polish government approved of the idea of sustainable development. However, at the end of this decade, a counteroffensive of opposing forces started, a kind of ecological counter-revolution. Its symptoms include dismantling of administrative structures and impairing the nature conservation law. The nature conservation bill has been altered in such a way that it threatens the existence of some protected areas, making them subject to the local authorities, the majority of which unfavourable to nature conservation. This appeal calls upon the Polish intellectual circles, especially environmentalists, to express a protest against the policy persistently downgrading the natural heritage preservation.
