Toxocariasis has been highlighted as a potentially important neglected infection of poverty in developed countries that experience substantive health disparities such as the United States. An association between Toxocara infection and lung function, in concert with a relatively high prevalence of infection, may mark an important mechanism by which this infection could contribute significantly to the differential morbidity across different socioeconomic groups and landscapes. To assess the potential relevance of this infection in a dense urban environment, we measured the association between forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and serology diagnosed Toxocara infection in a sample of US-born New York City residents. We identified a significant independent association between Toxocara infection and lung function, wherein those with previous Toxocara infection had a 236.9 mL reduced FEV1 compared to those without Toxocara infection even after adjusting for age, sex, ethnicity, level of education, smoking status, body mass index, and pet ownership. These findings from New York City corroborate similar findings in a national sample and, while the cross-sectional data preclude a direct causal relationship, this study identifies a potentially important neglected infection in a dense urban landscape.
The diversity and abundance of bumblebees (Bombus Latr.) in eight parks of Warsaw city and the impact of park size (range from 1.9 to 73 ha) as well as other selected characteristics (the percentage of the area covered by tree and the quality of park surroundings) on the bumblebee community were evaluated. In each park, bumblebees were observed along designated paths for 30 minutes. In total, 12 species of bumblebees were recorded, of which four belonged to cuckoo bumblebees (Psithyrus subgenus). We found: B. terrestris (L.), B. lapidarius, (L.), B. pascuorum (Scop.), B. hortorum (L.), B. semenoviellus (Skorikov), B. hypnorum (L.), B. ruderarius (Müller), B. pratorum (L.) and four cuckoo bumblebee species: B. (Ps.) bohemicus (Seidl.), B. (Ps.) campestris (Pz.), B. (Ps.) rupestris (F.), B. (Ps.) vestalis (Fourc.). The size of parks, percentage of area covered by trees, and characteristics of the areas surrounding the parks were found to be not significant for the diversity and abundance of bumblebees in urban parks. However, our results indicate the importance of the semi-natural areas within the parks for the species diversity.
Subject and purpose of work: The subject of the study is urban farming and examples of urban gardens built in selected cities in North America and Europe. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of urban farming on urban landscape. Materials and methods: A case study – analysis of the ecological, spatial and social aspects of selected examples. Results: The idea of urban farming is gaining popularity and every year there are more urban gardens in cities in North America and Europe. There are several dozen urban gardens in Poland. Their structure is diversified so as to meet the needs of local communities. The character and scale of urban farming is diversified. These gardens satisfy aesthetic, scenic, ecological, social and even economic needs of small communities. They enrich the urban landscape with new, seasonally changeable enclaves of utility and aesthetic greenery. Conclusions: Urban farming is an ecological, social and spatial factor and a favourable alternative to urban landscape transformations. The development of urban farming should be successively supported by local authorities.
In the reproduction period a male Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) is a centralplace forager, i.e. it transports food from hunting grounds to a central location – the nest. A centralplace forager is predicted to take larger or more prey when distance to a foraging site is longer. We studied kestrels breeding in a large Central European city (population 1.7 million), whose main prey are common voles (Microtus arvalis). Kestrel nests are located in the centre and the outskirts, although common voles are scarce in the former. The aim of our study was to analyse the body mass of common voles found in pellets under kestrel nests and relate it to the availability of common vole habitats within 1 km from the nests, controlled for vole frequency in the pellets. We assumed that the greater availability of common vole habitats, the shorter the distance to a foraging site. We found that the body mass of common voles found in pellets was significantly positively correlated with the availability of their habitats, but was not affected by their frequency in pellets. Our results may indicate that, contrary to the central-place foraging rule, and irrespectively of the amount of other prey taken, the kestrels hunted smaller voles when foraging grounds were further away. This might stem from decreased selectivity caused by competition, either in the native territory (due to the high density of kestrels in the centre) or in territories of outskirt kestrels, invaded by city centre kestrels. On the other hand, due to lack of data on the body size of common voles in our study area, the results may suggest that common voles were on average smaller in the centre than in the outskirts. Although the published data do not support the second explanation, more research is needed to verify this.
Park przyszpitalny w Abramowicach, będący kiedyś jednym z 24 zabytkowych założeń dworsko-ogrodowych w sąsiedztwie miasta Lublina, dzisiaj jest przyszpitalnym parkiem, na terenie którego rośnie 1445 drzew reprezentowanych przez 38 taksonów. Najbardziej liczne gatunki to: lipa drobnolistna, jesion wyniosły, świerk pospolity i klon pospolity. Najstarsze egzemplarze reprezentowane przez lipę drobnolistną, kasztanowca pospolitego, stanowią około 5% ogólnego drzewostanu. Z roku na rok stan zdrowotny drzew słabnie, z trudem można dostrzec pierwotne piękno, wartości dendrologiczne oraz ewolucję dawnego układu kompozycyjnego. Postępująca degradacja założenia powinna być podstawą do podjęcia właściwych działań ochronnych i rekonstrukcji założenia.
