Study of the radial growth response to climate factors at different tree ages is essential for predicting forest dynamics and formulating correct management policies. In this study, we analysed the growth responsiveness of Picea crassifolia to climate conditions, and evaluated its relationship to tree age at the individual tree scale, in the transitional zone between regions affected by the East Asian monsoon and winds blowing from the west (westerlies) in the Qilian Mountains. On three study sites, 150 cores were taken from 75 trees. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated between the standardized tree-ring series of each core (and chronology) and climatic factors which were utilized to research the climate-growth relationships. Quadratic polynomial fitting was used to test the relationships between tree age, chronological parameters, and the radial growth response to climate. Radial growth was positively influenced by total precipitation for the previous July-September and the current May-July. Additionally, radial growth was negatively correlated with the total monthly precipitation for the current September, and the mean monthly temperature for the previous July. Trees younger than 80 years old showed a stronger response to accumulative precipitation in the previous July-September, those older than 160 years old showed a stronger response to precipitation at the end of current growing season, while those of 140–160 years old showed a weaker response to precipitation in the current May-July.
In 2001–2003 on Sandomierska Upland researches were done in order to estimate the influence of the rootstock and the age on the growth and yielding of the ‘Szampion’ trees. This cultivar was grafted on P60 and M.26 rootstock. It was stated that the ‘Szampion’ had given abundant crops (73–113 t/ha on average) due to magnificent conditions of Sandomierska Upland. The height of the yield depended in a significant way on the rootstock (six-year-old trees on P60 yielded considerably better than on M.26) and the age of trees – the trees on M.26 younger by 2 years provided a significantly better yield. The growth and quality of fruits of the ‘Szampion’ depended on the age of scrutinized trees. The proportion of fruit with the diameter of more than 7.0 cm in all the studied combinations exceeded 80% and it was the highest in the trees on P60.
Hand fruit thinning was performed for four successive years on 'Gala' apple trees grafted on dwarf P 2 rootstock and planted at a density of 3333 trees/ha. Trees were 5 years old when the experiment started. Three thinning treatments were done with the assumption that apples at harvest should be medium sized (8 fruits per kg), large (7 fruits per kg), or very large (6 fruits per kg). To obtain such results, 84; 74 or 63 fruitlets were left per tree in the beginning of June. Two other treatments included thinning fruitlets with any defects, and no thinning in the control. To avoid subsequent effects of fruit load on blooming intensity, each year new trees were chosen for the experiment. The results indicated that with tree aging fruit load must be decreased to assure the same mean fruit weight.
The study is an attempt to determine share of sapwood and heartwood in stems of European larch trees from II and III class of age, grown in conditions of fresh coniferous mixed forest site (BMśw), fresh forest mixed site (LMśw), fresh forest site (Lśw). The highest hare of heartwood was observed in stems of European larch in conditions of fresh forest site Lśw, and the smallest in conditions of fresh coniferous mixed forest site (BMśw). Differences were also observed within the investigated classes of age, and higher share of heartwood observed in III class of age. The smallest share of heartwood characterized codominant trees and the highest dominant trees (from main tree stand in Kraft classification).

It is commonly known that Japanese larch, Larix kaempferi was first introduced in Europe in Great Britain in 1861. In the presence of European larches, L. decidua it was not long before the first hybrids between these species, called Dunkeld larches (Larix × marschlinsii), emerged there. It was found that there were several hybrid larch trees in Estonia that sprouted before one of their parent species was introduced in Europe. One of the oldest Dunkeld larches growing in Tallinn is about 210 years old. The radial growth of three Dunkeld larches in Estonia (in the cities of Pärnu and Tallinn and in the manor park of Suure-Kambja) and the determination of their age by cumulative growth graphs are discussed, with consideration given to the available knowledge on the introduction of Japanese larch. The conclusion is that there may have existed earlier alternative introduction routes of Japanese larch into northern Europe via Russia.
The paper presents an ecological analysis of the defoliation of Scotch pines in relation to the age of trees, and the dust fall in the immediate environment. The Bayesian modeling of empirical data was proposed here via MCMC technique – known as Gibbs sampling in the BUGS software. The usefulness of the methodology was accentuated in such ecological assessments.
