The factors that induced the creation of voluntary control system (DSK) in Poland are discussed. This system is created according to the systems existing in European Union. The aims of DSK, its structure and results of juice researches in the frames of DSK are presented. The restrictions for the not honest producers are presented. The important task of DSK is to propagate it among the producers, distributors and consumers. There are started the talks with the trade networks about the cooperation in the sphere of juice quality estimate. It's proved that the existence of DSK has the sense because in Poland doesn't exist the other more efficacious system that can to save the interests of honest producers and consumers.
In the paper reported are results of quality control of juices and nectars produced by the members of Voluntary Control System (DSK) (samples purchased on the market or taken during audits) and for the companies which are not members of DSK (samples purchased on the market). Particular attention was paid to products which share on the market is the largest. These were orange, grapefruit and apple juices. The analysis covered the most important parameters that allow qualifying products as authentic or adulterated. In particular cases, taking the advantage of cooperation with SGF/QUISEE, analysis were made in German laboratories to check authenticity of products declared as "direct juice" (analysis of stable isotopes 18O/16O) and to check presence of oligosaccharides and aroma compounds. Most products available on the Polish market already fulfil requirements of Code of Practice. However, there are evident cases of adulteration. In most cases it is dilution of juices and simultaneous addition of sugars and acids. Apple juices are good example. Retailers and official control bodies were informed in detail (including companies' names) about the situation and the proper action was requested. In all investigated black currant nectars excessive amount of sorbitol was found, which indicates addition of other fruit juices reach in sorbitol. In many cases declaration of producers on the labeling were not true. Nevertheless, it may be stated that in the last year quality improvement of investigated products was observed, compared to previous years. Taking into consideration changes in Polish legislation (withdrawal of the Polish Standards concerning juices and nectars and harmonisation of the Polish law with the requirements of the European Union) producers will be obliged to adjust to EU food law. VCS will control this adjustment This will help gaining consumer confidence to juices, nectars and fruit drinks, contributing to consumption increase of these products and will contribute to further development of the Polish fruit juice industry.

Voluntary Control System for juices; nectars and similar products (DSK) has been established in Poland in the year 2002. It has been financed by the members of DSK and also supported by the Polish Association of Juices Producers and SGF Project „Quality Initiative for South and East Europe" (QUI- SEE). In the article the author analysed the driving forces of adulteration and the control measures enforcing fair competition. The general conclusion is that only industrial self-control system allows to clear the market of falsified products. Voluntary Control System in Poland took advantage of the experience of the European Quality Control System and in particular those of Schutzgemeinschaft der Fruchtsaftindustrie e. V. Over the last 3 years great progress has been made in adjustment of the Polish processors to the requirements of the EU legislation. Most products supplied by the members of DSK are in accordance with the AIJN Code of Practice reference values. Major problems are found with nonmembers. Proper measures are taken in cooperation with state authorities and retailers to clear the market of falsified products, which in total amount to about 30% of the analyzed products. The figure may not quite reflect situation on the marked as the analyses concentrated on suspicious producers and products. To further improve the situation the list of DSK control measures has been recently extended by the negative covenant.
