Essential nutritional components are quantified in the study in addition to major antioxidants, carotenoids, phenols and flavonoids. Their antioxidant activities were also analyzed using DPPH, ABTS and hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging activities and by determining their iron reducing power. Results indicated that the highest quantity of nutritional and antioxidant components was obtained in red variety (4.63 mg/g ascorbic acid, 10.32 mg/g total carotenoid content, 61.50 mg/g total flavonoid content, 310.27 mg/g total phenolic content) followed by orange, yellow and green varieties. Similar trend was observed while analyzing their antioxidant activities by different methods. In studying correlation between components and antioxidant activity, a strong correlation was obtained for ABTS radical scavenging activity with total phenolic content (R2 = 0.722) and total carotenoid contents (R2 = 0.709), while moderate correlation was observed for ABTS radical scavenging activity with total flavonoid contents (R2 = 0.517) and ascorbic acid (R2 = 0.673).
The effect of three foliar-applied Ca-containing preparations on the anatomical features of leaves of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) was studied. The following preparations were used: Ca(NO3)2, Librel Ca and Wapnowit, applied at the respective concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 1%, which corresponded to a content of 2000 mg Ca 􀂉 dm-3. Light and scanning electron microscopy were used in the study. It was demonstrated that in amphistomatic bifacial pepper leaves numerous specialised cells occurred which accumulated calcium oxalate crystals in the form of crystalline sand. Anisocytic stomata were found with a much greater density in the abaxial epidermis. They were characterized by very well-developed outer cuticular ledges. It was found that in the leaves of the plants sprayed with the nutrient supplements with increased Ca content there was a much smaller number of epidermal cells per 1 mm2 than in the control plants. These cells were distinguished by an increased size. In the case of the application of the nutrient supplements Librel Ca and Wapnowit, the number of stomata also decreased. However, the application of the calcium supplements resulted in an increase in the value of the stomatal index compared to the control, which is attributable to a significant reduction in the number of epidermal cells not belonging to the stomata. The plants additionally supplied with Ca were marked by a larger number of colenchyma layers and an increased volume of leaf parenchyma cells. In the case of pepper leaves, the thin cuticle and the outer cell wall are not a major barrier to the Ca-containing preparations applied for spray treatment. Nevertheless, the decrease in the number of stomata may restrict the possibility of Ca uptake by this way, which compensates the increase in surface area of particular epidermal cells that will be the main way of Ca penetration into the internal leaf tissues.
W latach 1990-1995 przeprowadzono badania dotyczące uprawy odmian papryki słodkiej (Capsicum annuum L.) w nie ogrzewanym wysokim tunelu foliowym. Spośród pięciu badanych odmian najlepiej plonowały: Bryza, Monsun i Zefir. Stwierdzono, że w warunkach klimatycznych Olsztyna, można uzyskać zadowalające plony papryki w uprawie pod osłonami.
Sweet pepper belongs to vegetables with high biological value, characteristic taste and health-promoting features, which depend on the content of many elements with antioxidant capacity. Pepper fruits are an important source of mineral components for people. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different foliar feeding regimes with the use of calcium on the content of macro- and microelements in sweet pepper fruits. The experiment with the sweet pepper cultivar Caryca F1 was carried out under field conditions in 2010-2011. Various calcium preparations: Ca(NO3)2 , Insol Ca, Librel Ca, were applied in plant nutrition. The evaluated preparations were sprayed 3 and 5 times, in the concentration of 1%, until complete wetness of the plants. Control fields were sprayed with water. No significant influence of the examined factors on the dry matter content (%) was recorded in the fruits of cv. Caryca F1 sweet pepper cultivated in a field. However, the influence of the applied calcium preparations on the content of N-total, P, Ca, Fe, Zn, Cu in pepper fruits was shown to vary. After an application of Ca(NO3)2, higher concentrations of K, Zn, Cu were demonstrated; an application of Insol Ca stimulated a higher content of K and Cu; more K, Fe, Zn and Cu occurred in the fruit after feeding with Librel Ca, and the content of P was lower after an application of Insol Ca and Librel Ca, all versus the control. The different number of treatments did not have any significant effect on the chemical content of pepper fruits, except for Fe and Mn, where 5 treatments increased the content of these elements in pepper fruits. The positive influence of the applied calcium preparations and of the number of treatments on the accumulation of Ca in pepper fruits were proven. For example, 5 treatments were demonstrated to have increased the calcium content in fruits by an average 25.3%, and 3 treatments raised the above trait by 15.3% above the control.
