The aim of the study is to present the essence of the bio-economy, with particular emphasis on sustainable agricultural development. The attention focused on the prospects of development of organic farming as a supplier of raw materials for the production of green energy. The basis of this research was mainly critical analysis of national literature and data from the Central Statistical Office and Quality Inspection of Agricultural and Food. The data covered years 2010-2014.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the use of agri-environment schemes in the years 2004-2006 and 2007-2013 by farmers south-eastern Poland. In this region are more implemented these packages sciences, which are less onerous. Most of the agri- -environmental programs implemented by farmers, puts great emphasis on the conservation and preservation of the rural landscape. Agri-environmental program increased environmental awareness among farmers who implement it and helps to inhibit the development of intensive agriculture. Simplification of the documentation related to the agri-environmental program, may affect the increase in the number of new farmers willing to implement these programs. In south-eastern region of Poland, the natural packages are realized more willingly, and receiving payments is the main incentive that convinces farmers to join agri- -environment program. Implementing the agri-environmental program on farms in this region of Poland contributed both to improvement of water quality, reduction of soil erosion on a farm, and on the other hand to reduction of the livestock population. Increased employment of agri-environment advisor, especially botanists and ornithologists, would facilitate farmer participation in environmental programs.
Jak wykazały badania własne, dzięki zastosowaniu mikoryzy w uprawie kontenerowej sosny w latach 2002-2003, która będzie głównym gatunkiem przy nasadzeniach gruntów porolnych, uzyskano wyższe przyrosty wysokości roślin o 25,5— 27,9% w porównaniu do roślin nietraktowanych szczepionkami mikoryzowyi. Natomiast przy zastosowaniu nawozów powszechnie stosowanych w szkółkarstwie ozdobnym, do których zalicza się nawozy Osmocote i Basacote, uzyskano zwyżkę 30,4 - 40,2%. Rośliny mikoryzowane posiadały dłuższe igły i większą liczbę pąków szczytowych. Przy takiej różnicy we wzroście między mikoryzacją a dotychczas stosowanym nawożeniem, mikoryzacja zasługuje na większą niż dotąd uwagę W wielu doświadczeniach wegetacyjnych udowodniono, że pożądany wzrost roślin mikoryzowanych można otrzymać obniżając zalecane dawki nawozu nawet o 50%, a współczynnik wykorzystania nawozu możne wzrosnąć 4-5-krotnie. Korzystne oddziaływania grzybów mikoryzowych na wzrost roślin mogą być wykorzystane w rolnictwie i w szkółkarstwie zarówno na potrzeby szkółkarstwa ozdobnego, jak i planowanych zalesień gruntów wyłączanych z użytkowania rolniczego.
The paper reviews the concept of public goods, indicating its various dimensions. The fundamental objective of the paper is conceptualizing public goods and answering a question whether a public goods delivered by agricultural land is valorized in land prices. The aim of the study was also to identify the mechanism that makes intrinsic land utility transformed into productivity in monetary units. A conducted research consists in deriving a land rent capitalized in land prices and estimating its share in land value in comparison with the share of lease fees in the different regions of Poland in years 2000–2009. In the authors opinion since accession of Poland to the UE a market has valorized intrinsic utilities of land, whereas the new role of capital and labour is distribution of those utilities in favour of consumers. Given the fact that there is a lack of Polish scientifi c studies on agricultural areas as a provider of public goods fi ndings of foreign scientists were also used in the research. Since the beginning of human civilization, the land has been creating certain utilities which satisfy human needs. When the dangerous side effects of industrial agriculture have occurred intrinsic land utilities are being discovered anew. They have a nature of public goods and constitute a hard core of the sustainable agriculture paradigm. Despite irreversible accumulation of capital in the anthropogenic environment many new utilities of the land come into existence without additional capital and labour inputs. Since they are public goods, they are paid from taxes in great measure. This way an intrinsic land utility takes a form of a paid product and can be called “intrinsic productivity” of land.
The paper reviews the concept of sustainable development, indicating its various dimensions. Natural environment in developed countries became almost entirely anthropogenic. Under such conditions, the way of using natural resources has to change as well. It is forced by the new needs and priorities described above, i.e. a demand for an assurance concerning renewability of natural resources as well as pro-social and pro-environmental criteria of the resources allocation. The fundamental objective of the paper is an attempt at elaboration of the new land rent concept and fi nd the answer to the question: Does a land need capital stimulus to be productive in a sustainable development? Authors formulated the hypothesis: the reason for the land rent to occur are intrinsic land utilities which in the commodity money economy cause the expected productivity of capital factor in agriculture to be higher than in its market environment. Therefore, the value of land rent is determined by a positive difference between the expected productivity of capital in agriculture and in its market environment.
Intensively practices rice-wheat (R-W) cropping system (RWCS) in South-Asia is suffering from many sustainability issues such as micronutrient deficiencies, labour scarcity, production cost, declining land, declining groundwater level and water productivity along with declining soil health. Climate change further complexes the things in one or other way. Therefore, the intervention of climate smart technologies is urgent for improving water productivity in an enormous water use RWCS of South-Asia. Although, farmers are confused regarding picking of suitable climate smart technology (CST) viz., laser land leveling, un-puddled direct-seeded rice (UPDSR), soil matric potential based irrigation, double zero tillage in wheat followed by rice, raised bed planting, short duration cultivars and correct transplantation time, for enhancing their livelihoods through increasing land and water productivity on one side and mitigating global warming consequences on other. Performance of these technologies is both site and situation specific, and care must be taken in practicing them. Most of them cutting down the drainage losses, which further reduces recharging of soil profile which is not required in water stressed regions while these might be termed as energy-saving technologies; otherwise used to withdraw water from the deeper soil depths. These CST are also useful for waterlogged regions. However, CST viz. correct transplantation time and short duration cultivars partition higher fraction of ET water (evapotranspiration) from E (evaporation) to T (transpiration) component which further favour higher grain yields and thus, higher water productivity. Therefore, it is crucial for introduction of CST for improving agricultural and water productivity in the era of climate change in an enormous water use RWCS of South-Asia.
Subject and purpose of work: Community Empowerment in Sustainable Agricultural Development and CSR (Study of spice farmers in Maluku Utara). One of the duties of the nation is to facilitate prosperity for its citizens through development. Such development is pursued by the government to reach economic growth by utilizing all agriculture potentials and by organizing community development. Materials and methods: In this study, the goals are to identify, describe and analyze the empowerment of the spice farmers’ community in Maluku Utara in sustainable agricultural development and CSR. This study is descriptive in nature and uses the qualitative approach, while data analysis relies on the Creswell’s model. Maluku Utara has a resource potential that is needed for sustainable agriculture development and CSR for community welfare. Results: Through empowerment, which involves several stages, such as enlightenment, capacity building, and enforcement, it is possible to improve awareness, capacity, skill and strength of the community to exploit all potentials. The support given to the spice farmers’ community in sustainable agriculture development and CSR is not at the maximum. Despite this support, there are factors constraining community empowerment in sustainable agriculture development and CSR. Conclusions: These constraints may come from community, a very low number of agriculture counselors, natural resource inadequacy, and also weather factors at Maluku Utara, all of which hamper the empowerment process.
From the early 60's till the late 80's, in many countries - among them also in Hungary - agricultural production went through a tremendous development. In Hungary there was a 2-3-fold increase in the average yields of winter wheat, and maize - the two main crops - in comparison to those of the 50's. One of the main factors determining these developments was the increasing use of mineral fertilizers. From the turn of the century till the late 50's, nutrient balances in Hungary were strongly negative: 20 - 30 kg/ha/year less N and K₂O, and 10 kg/ha/year less P₂O₅ was given to the fields in the different forms (farmyard manure, mineral fertilizer and by-products, etc.), than was removed by the harvested yields. Nutrient balances of P became positive in the early 60's, while balances of N and K in the early 70's, resp. Then, for 20 years, N balances were positive by 10 - 20 kg/ha/year, while both P₂O₅ and K₂O balances by 30 - 50 kg/ha/year, resp. These long-term positive nutrient balances resulted in the NPK enrichment of our soils, which was also proven by the national soil test series. During the 80's, for example, the amount of yearly applied mineral fertilizer was 230 - 280 kg/ha N + P₂O₅ + K₂O/arable land. In certain regions N leaching could cause environmental damage, while, as a result of the P-Zn antagonism, on the fields poorly supplied with Zn, overfertilization with P resulted in 1 - 2 t/ha/year maize yield losses. From the early 90's, however, when political and ecological changes took place in the country, the free market was introduced, and state subsidies on mineral fertilizer were withdrawn, there was a sharp decrease in mineral fertilizer use: applied N dropped to 1/5th, P and K to 1/20th of the amount used in the 80's. This dramatic decrease resulted in the change of nutrient balances: in 1991 the balance for N was -60, for P₂O₅ -30, and for K₂O -40 kg/ha for the whole country, resp. In 1992 and 1993 the situation was similar, while in 1994 a slight increase in mineral fertilizer use was observed. According to our estimation, mineral fertilization of 150 kg/ha/year N + P₂O₅ + K₂O is sufficient for long-term sustainable plant nutrition in Hungary, if farmyard manure application and the incorporation of byproducts remains on the recent level. During intensive fertilization practice, emphasis was on the quantity, while crop and soil demands for specific or more economic fertilizers were not taken into consideration. For N, lime ammonium nitrate, for P superphosphate, and for K, potash chloride was used on almost the whole area. As a new attempt to find more economic P sources, Algerian rock phosphate was checked in field trials, set up on characteristic acidic soils in different regions of Hungary, as well as other Central European countries. The first two-year results are discussed in the presentation.
Poland represents a country with relatively low agricultural productivity but high potential, particularly for certain crops. The aim of our study was to: (i) Show the potential to increase crop yields to sustainable levels of wheat and rapeseed in Poland based on simulations in the Global Agro-Ecological Zones (GAEZ v3.0) model (ii) Show the yield gap for wheat and rapeseed for Poland (iii) Compare yield gaps in Poland with yield gaps of neighbouring counties: Germany, Czech Republic, and Slovakia (iv) Discuss the potential of agricultural productivity increase along with challenges and pragmatic requirements associated with increasing agricultural productivity in Poland To our knowledge, this is the first study that discusses spatially sustainable intensification of agriculture in Poland and critically assesses opportunities pertinent to such intensification. The results show that Polish agriculture can play an important role in contributing to sustainable agricultural productivity increase in a resource-constrained world. The results presented here also demonstrate that yields can even be doubled, yet significant investment and relevant know-how for agriculture must be provided.
It could be stated of the European Union member states that the proportion of workers in agriculture is steadily declining which in addition is coupled with a low proportion of young farmers. The issue of young farmers and sustainability is a top priority in the strategy “Europe 2020: Smart, Sustainable and Inclusive Growth”, as the importance of young people’s involvement and environmental protection is indispensable to the future of agriculture. In my research, I look at the young farmers of the Homokhátság (Sand Ridge) region of Hungary searching for answers to the challenges young farmers face today in these special areas. How do they deal with environmental protection, how does their farming influence the problem of aridification?
