Background. Numerous connections of physical activity with biological indicators and various diseases justify its place in the multifaceted theory of health, thus making it a health measure. The aim of the study was to learn about the physical activity declared by students at Belarusian universities – to determine its level and dominant areas. Material and methods. 739 people studying in Brest, Minsk, and Grodno (Belarus) were surveyed with the long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Results. The total physical activity of the surveyed students amounted to 4840.5 metabolic equivalent of task (MET) min/week (median), which proves their significant involvement in the broadly understood physical culture. The dominant area of their physical activity proved to be work-related effort (median=1700.6 MET-min/week), while the lowest activity of the respondents was related to sport and recreation. The surveyed men showed higher MET-min/week rates in total physical activity and its components compared with women except for housework. In each of the analyzed variables (gender, Body Mass Index (BMI), selfassessment of physical fitness, and declared amount of spare time), there were statistically significant differences in the physical activity level of the surveyed students. Conclusions. The surveyed men proved to be more active than women in all domains of physical activity except for housework. Respondents with a BMI indicating overweight were more active than those with a normal BMI or those who were underweight. High self-esteem and declaration of lacking spare time are associated with high values of the MET-min/week index.
Problem-based learning has been used in medical school in a number of different countries around the world for over 50 years, with both undergraduate and graduate students. Instead of the traditional lectures, laboratory practical classes and tutorial system of education, students in small groups are presented with a problem that they must try to solve. They are assisted by a 'facilitator' who helps them formulate the problem and generally advises them but does not supply information. The students have to decide what information they need to solve the problem, find it and communi­cate it to the others in the group. At this stage a solution may be apparent, but sev­eral more group discussions to reformulate the problem followed by re-iterations of the information seeking process may be needed before a solution can be found. The theory is that because information is sought and presented in a relevant context, it is valued and is more likely to be remembered. At the end of the session student reflect on how they performed. Problem-based learning has been criticised from a number of points of view, especially that it does not present a coherent curriculum, the cur­riculum is not necessarily 'covered', and that in many medical schools the implemen­tation has been less than optimal.
The paper presents the results of a pilot study on post-secondary school students' interest in geography itself and geography university studies as well as an approach to geography as a scientific discipline. The continuous drop in post-secondary students' population poses a problem to universities, including the field of geography, therefore the research findings may be the support for taking steps intended to counteract the decline in geography studies popularity.
Background. Physical activity is the primary factor in maintaining health and fitness. The minimal amount of physical activity per week is about 150 minutes of moderate activity. There are also many different motivation factors for activity, depending on various characteristics, for example, gender. The following article aims to prove how far gender can differentiate the motivation factor determining the amount of students’ physical activity. Material and methods. The study was carried out in 2016 in a group of 694 students of Warsaw University. The tool used to conduct the research was a proprietary questionnaire. Results. The study showed that there are distinct differences between women and men. Firstly, the study allows for stating that students demonstrate different attitudes towards recreational activity. The second important outcome shows that intrinsic motivation is stronger in female students, while extrinsic factors play an essential role in males. Conclusions. The obtained results on physical activity of students of Warsaw University remain partially in line with those found in other universities. Fitness improvement, weight reduction and well-being are the main motivation factors affecting the amount of physical activity. Another factor pointed out by students, and strongly emphasised by women, is taking care of own figure and physical condition. The element of pleasure concomitant with physical activity also becomes one of the most significant motivating factors for students of Warsaw University. Furthermore, male students are more likely to be driven by competition and selfexamination, while females are more into weight control.
The aim of the study was to analyze the level of physical activity of students of selected fields of study at Biała Podlaska University depending on the year of study. The study involved 450 people, studying at the first and second stages of education at the State School of Higher Education (PSW) in Biała Podlaska. In the study, a method of diagnostic survey was applied, with the use of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire IPAQ – short version. Based on the analysis it was concluded that the surveyed students were characterized by a moderate level of physical activity. The diversity of types of physical activity of students in relation to the year of study were statistically significant in terms of total activity, moderate activity and walking – in favor of students of the second year of undergraduate studies.
The most effective and the cheapest method of cardiovascular disease prevention is changing lifestyle. Cardiovascular disease is caused by many factors. They include: a diet rich in saturated fat and cholesterol, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, physical inactivity, overweight and obesity. The aim of the research was to assess the level of knowledge of the students of the Medical University about cardiovascular disease prevention. Material and methods: Research was conducted on 200 students of the Medical University of Lublin, residing in the Student House No. 4 in Lublin. Self-authorship questionnaires were used to assess the level of knowledge of the students of the Medical University about cardiovascular disease prevention. Research results: The students of the Medical University have broad knowledge about the influence of physical activity, diet, cigarettes and alcohol use on cardiovascular disease prevention. 90.5 percent of the respondents know that smoking greatly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. More than a half of the students are aware that excessive alcohol consumption has a negative impact on the cardiovascular system. 38.67 percent of the respondents recognize moderate alcohol consumption as protective for cardiovascular disease. The remaining 3.13 percent of the students have no knowledge about this issue. Almost half of the respondents (45 percent) is aware that psychosocial factors have an impact on the cardiovascular system. 86.5 percent of the students believe that there is a correlation between cardiovascular disease and factors such as: low socioeconomic status, social isolation, stress, negative emotions, depression. The remaining 13.5 percent of the respondents have incomplete knowledge about this issue. Almost the half of the respondents knows that type A personality increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, whereas the remaining 52 percent of the students have incomplete knowledge about this issue.
Background. This study aims to analyse the relationship between physical activity (PA) and body mass index (BMI) in undergraduate university students of three fields of study from the four Visegrad Group countries – Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary. Material and methods. The research was conducted in 2015 on adolescent undergraduate university student populations in three fields of study – humanities, medical, and technical sciences. The sample included 2,484 students in total. The data was collected using the extended version of the standardised International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Students completed the questionnaire via the INDARES online system. Results. The results confirmed significant differences in PA between sexes in favour of males both in its overall manifestation and in the individual levels of PA intensity (p<0.05). The comparison of the four countries revealed significant differences in PA in males and females in all PA domains (p<0.05). The evaluation of the total BMI, as well as the one measured in individual countries confirmed a significant difference between sexes in favour of males (p<0.05). The study of the relationship between PA and BMI did not reveal a statistically significant dependence in any of the tested domains. This conclusion applies both to males and females. Conclusions. Males are generally more physically active than females overall and in individual fields of study. Also, males exhibit higher BMI in all the studied categories. No significant relation between PA intensity and volume and BMI was found in either sex.
Background: The aim of the research was to find out how the process of the study course Tourism at the Latvian Academy of Sport Education affects the formation of the students’ attitude towards outdoor life education. Material/Methods: In order to find it out, first of all, we clarified the students’ previous knowledge, understanding of outdoor education, as well as their previous outdoor life experience. The total number of participants was 97 students. Both theoretical and practical classes, as well as a five-day outdoor camp with various outdoor activities were included in the study course Tourism. The method of inquiry was used in the research. Results: The results of the first inquiries showed that students have very small previous outdoor life experience. The study course Tourism helped students develop a positive attitude and at least short-time motivation for the development of further outdoor experience. Conclusions: Research shows that Latvian Academy of Sport Education students’ prior outdoor living experience compared to experiences of other country students, such as Norway, the Czech Republic, or Sweden, is very small. The study course program Tourism increased students outdoor living experience. The course comprised a positive attitude and at least a temporary motivation for further formation of an outdoor experience. However, to ensure long-term motivation, further studies are required.
