70 samples of insects caught in a Johnson suction trap were taken during the vegetative period in 2009. The trap was sited in the Experimental Station Institute of Plant Protection – National Research Institute in Winna Góra, Poland. The samples contained 2 869 beetles (Coleoptera) of which 393 (13.7%) are known as stored product pests. 63 specimens of beetle Rhizopertha dominica (F.) were caught. It is the first recorded occurrence in Poland of such an economically important stored product pest isolated outside the storage environment.
Granary weevil (Sitophilus granarius L.) belongs to primary stored-product pests and causes extensive economical losses by reducing quantity and quality of the grain and wheat products. The morphological diversity within each of three most common weevil species: S. granarius, S. oryzae and S. zeamais is high. All three species can also feed on different types of grain. The aim of our study was to check the range of molecular diversity between ten populations of S. granarius derived from different sources in Poland, Europe and USA and to compare results with those obtained for some populations of S. oryzae and S. zeamais. For phylogenetic analysis we applied the RAPD technique, which provides DNA markers dispersed throughout the whole genome and are easy to collect and analyse. The phylogenetic analysis of obtained results revealed the high similarity between all populations of granary weevil, European as well as American ones and, simultaneously, considerable diversity between granary weevil and rice and maize weevils.
The combined impact of microwave radiation and cold storage on Tribolium castaneum Herbst and Sitophilus oryzae L. adults either continuously or intermittently was evaluated. The insects were exposed to 2 450 MHz at power level of 100 W for exposure time 10 min, continuously and intermittently. In all experiments, the highest rate of mortality was achieved for exposure time 10 min intermittently and 72 h cold storage duration. Intermittent exposures were generally more effective in killing insects of both species compared with those of continuous irradiation. Combinations of microwave radiation and cold storage were found highly compatible and synergistic. The synergistic interaction indicates that microwave radiation can be used with cold storage for management of T. castaneum and S. oryzae adult developmental stage. This treatment could provide an effective and friendly environmental treatment technique in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program.
