The authors investigated carotenoids in selected body parts of pike before, during, and post-spawning period.
The comparison of out-off-season spawning of two cultured ide stock were examined. The obtained results show, that is possible to reproduced ide a few months before their natural spawning season. Generally, the percentage of spermiation and ovulation was very high, as well as spawners survival. The biological quality of the gametes was higher in stock cultured at ponds, than from fish cultured under controlled conditions. One ide females from cultured stock under controlled conditions ovulated without hormonal stimulation (control group). The quality of oocytes collected from this fish was much lower than from hormonally stimulated fish.
Striated murrel Channa striatus were injected with natural hormones (pituitary extract and human chorionic gonadotropin) and synthetic hormones (luteinizing hormone releasing hormone analogue and ovaprim). When compared to the LHRHap and ovaprim, the latency period was long in pituitary- (24 h) and HCG-injected (26 h) fish. In the pituitary-injected C. striatus the percentage of fertilisation was the lowest (60-68%) but the duration of hatching was longest (39-43 h) followed by HCG- (36-38 h), LHRHap- (34-36 h) and ovaprim-injected (21-23 h) individuals. In terms of fertilisation (95-98%) and hatching, ovaprim yielded better results. Ova reached the highest diameter (1.34-1.45 mm) in C. striatus injected with ovaprim, followed by HCG (1.22-1.30 mm) and pituitary (1.21-1.27 mm). The lowest ova diameter (1.07-1.09 mm) was observed in C. striatus injected with LHRHap.
During a five-year period, the fecundity and egg size of individual Vistula sea trout marked with PIT tags were studied. The dependencies between fish length, age and the number of times the fish had spawned and its fecundity and egg size were analyzed. Both fecundity and egg size increased as fish length increased. However, after taking into consideration fish growth, fecundity decreased slightly with age while egg size increased. These two traits were mutually inversely correlated. After taking into consideration differences in length, fish that were spawning for the first time were less fecund than their peers at a similar egg size.
Background. The usage of common carp pituitaries has been associated with very high costs, resulting from sacrificing the valuable broodstock. A close taxonomic proximity between the Common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., and Prussian carp, Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782), reflected in the presence of high levels of the homologous carp LH hormone in Prussian carp pituitaries, was recently demonstrated. This prompted the present authors to evaluate the Prussian carp pituitaries as a less expensive alternative to carp pituitaries, for inducing spawning in common carp. Materials and Methods. Prussian carp were fished in Lake Pamvotis (NW Greece) on April 4, 2007 and 204 pituitaries were extracted and processed. Accordingly, the prepared pituitary liquid extract was injected in 30 female common carp (experimental group) in the State Carp Hatchery in Psathotopi, (western Greece). Common carp pituitary extract was used for the hypophysation of female common carp in the control group (n = 30). In both groups, standard hatchery procedures were followed concerning broodstock handling during the artificial propagation of common carp. Fertilized eggs were incubated in 7-L Zugar jars after removing the sticky substrate and hatching percentage was calculated. Results. Spawning success was 73.3%, total egg yield was 5.94 kg, total relative fecundity was 112.5 g · kg-1 of body weight (150.0 g · kg-1 of body weight based on fertile broodstock), and hatching percentage reached 85.2%. Statistically, all the above performance values were not significantly different compared to the controls. Conclusion. Taking advantage of a natural resource practically unexploited, the use of Prussian carp pituitaries in the artificial propagation of common carp was equally effective to common carp pituitaries, contributing to lower running costs in the hatchery.
Large areas of the Łeba River catchment are inaccessible for fish because of barriers, and this reduces significantly their spawning possibilities. The sea trout Salmo trutta L. population in the Łeba River is sustained through compensatory stocking with smolts. In the autumn of 2007 and 2008, seventy two sea trout were caught in a lake, through which the river flows, several kilometers upstream from its mouth. These individuals were tagged with radio transmitters that were recorded by two automatic stations in the river. They were also monitored with active telemetry. Only 26 of these fish moved upstream (41% in 2007 and 33% in 2008), and five reached the spawning grounds. Neither the release location in the lake nor the size of the fish influenced the timing of the fish entering the river or the extent of their migration. Among the fish originated from smolt stocked in the river segment below the lake, 24% continued to migrate and entered the river after approximately 5.7 days, as compared to 45% of the wild fish entering the river after approximately 2.3 days. Most of the stocked fish remained in the lower reaches of the river, upstream from the lake.
