Anthropometric chest structure of Polish centenarians

100%
The aim of the study was to analyze somatometric chest structure in persons aged over 100 years. The study group included 83 women and 13 men, aged 100-108 yr (median age -100.8 yr), who participated in the scientific project: 'Genetic and Environmental Factors of Longevity of Polish Centenarians' in 2002-2004. The Rohrer index of chest structure using acromion-acromion length and body height were compared with the results of pulse oximetry, spirometry, and the level of general physical activity. The majority of the centenarians had a pyknic structure of the chest, most likely as a result of a progressive reduction of body height and chest stooping. In comparison with the women who had marked alterations of chest structure, females with less profound changes had a lower respiratory rate, better tolerance of exercise, higher forced vital capacity, and a higher physical activity. A small number of male subjects studied made it impossible to analyze statistical correlations in this group. We conclude that there is a need to redefine anthropometric indices for a reliable assessment of chest structure in senescent subjects.
We report data on the somatometry of the white-toothed shrew Crocidura russula (Hermann, 1780), based on 302 specimens (153 males, 149 females) captured between 1980 and 1982 in the Ebro Delta (northeastern Spain). Variations in body size and weight were analysed according to sex, relative age (estimated by tooth wear) and month of capture. Relative and seasonal growth were also studied. No statistical difference in body size was detected between sexes. The specimens showed highest growth rate up to about fourteen weeks of age. Afterwards, most of the variations detected in body length and especially in weight were basically related to sexual stage. Specimens born in the first litters of the year grew faster than those born at the end.
Dokonano przeglądu piśmiennictwa z zakresu somatometrii stosowanej do pomiaru stanu odżywienia. Omówiono pomiary wysokości i masy ciała, grubości fałdów skórno-tłuszczowych, obwodów ramienia, talii i bioder, szczególnie osób starszych i niepełnosprawnych. Przedstawiono sposoby wyliczania najczęściej stosowanych wskaźników antropometrycznych oraz ich interpretację.
This study analyses, using selected somatometric features, secular trend changes which have occurred over a quarter of a century in female and male students of the Medical University of Łódź. The study is based on the results of an anthropometric survey carried out among first-year students who commenced their studies in the academic years 1978/79 (240 females and 193 males), 1982/83 (347 females and 188 males), 1988/89 (178 females and 165 males) and 2003/04 (188 females and 77 males). The following features were examined in all participants in the survey: body height (B-v), the height of the lower body segment measured from a floor base to the crista iliaca at the point on the mid-axillary line (B-ic), shoulder width (a-a), intertrochanteric distance (tro-tro) and resting chest circumference. To compare average values Student’s t-test was used with assumptions of equal and unequal variances. To gauge the magnitude of changes in specific features in the course of a quarter of a century a percentage difference in results was calculated for the years 2003/2004 and 1978/1979. The basis for the calculations was the initial value of a feature at the beginning of the period analysed. It was determined that in the 25-year period analysed (1978–2003) the young people commencing studies at the Medical University of Łódź exhibited an acceleration in the height of the lower body segment (B-ic) and of the intertrochanteric distance (tro-tro) and a deceleration in resting chest circumference. Additionally, an increase in shoulder width has been noted in female students; no significant intergenerational changes were noted in body height, although the last 15 years display certain symptoms of deceleration; there is an emerging tendency towards a blurring of the differences in body proportions between the sexes in the environment of the young people studying at the Medical University of Łódź.
