An investigation was done on the effect of different types of organic mulches that were applied in form of straw to the soil mulching process, on the weed infestation, number, and fresh mass of weeds in broccoli cv. Milady F1 (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica Plenck) and tomato cv. Polfast F1 (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) grown under polypropylene fibre as a covering, or grown without a covering. The different types of organic straw mulches were: rye (Secale cereale L.), corn (Zea mays L.), rape (Brassica napus L. subsp. napus), and buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.). All the organic mulches were applied at a dose of 10 t/ha. The effect of the mulches was compared to a control plot which had no mulch. The type of organic mulch applied to the soil mulching process influenced species composition, number, and fresh mass of weeds. This effect could be the result of the properties of the mulch (colour, structure, etc.) or the allelopathic effect on the germination and growth of individual weeds species. Irrespective of the investigated factors, 24 and 25 weeds species, respectively, were observed immediately after cover removal and before broccoli and tomato harvest. In the first date of estimation Chenopodium album L., Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv., Fallopia convolvulus (L.) Á. Löve, Stellaria media (L.) Vill., and Viola tricolor L. dominated, however, before the vegetables were harvested Ch. album, V. tricolor, Veronica arvensis L., and E. crus-galli dominated. An application of polypropylene fibre contributed to an increase in the number and fresh mass of weeds in both vegetables in the first date of estimation (after cover removal). During this period, vegetables cannot compete with weeds. It is important to note, though, that before the vegetables were harvested, a decrease was found in the number and fresh mass of weeds in the covered plots. The most efficient weed limiter, both after cover removal and also before the broccoli and tomatoes were harvested, was buckwheat and rye straw, respectively.

Analysis of soil compaction at potato cultivation

63%
The effect of soil mulching with green manure at potato cultivation on the growth, quality and yielding of tubers were investigated on the light loamy soil in 1998/1999. The sowing rate of oil radish used as green manure was 15 kg·ha⁻¹. Compaction of soil in the ridges - the space of tubers’ growth, by wheels of tractor-implement set, is a negative factor at potato cultivation. It results in increased fuel consumption, rising weed infestation, disturbing of water conditions in soil down to the depth of 50-60 cm. Passing of tractor wheels along the furrow compacts the ridge profile. Half of the ridge profile pressed by tractor wheel, decreases by 20.6 cm² in comparison to the other half. There occur asymmetrical curves illustrating soil compactness on the width of interrow surface. At harvesting of potato tubers the positive effect of mulching on crushing of soil clods was observed. The amount of soil aggregates of size below 10 mm were much higher and aggregates exceeding 30 mm much less, as compared with control field. Mulching of the soil positively affected also the size of potato tubers and consequently-their yield. On experimental object effects of factors such as increased volume and reduction of soil compaction in the ridges, were also observed.
This study was carried out during the winter seasons of 2016 and 2017 at private farm in Beni Suief Governorate, Egypt to investigate the integrative use of potassium levels (24, 48, 72 and 96 kg K₂O fed⁻¹) and soil mulching (rice straw and bare soil) on growth and productivity of garlic under three levels of surface irrigation (60, 80 and 100 % of crop evapotranspiration (ETC)). The experimental layout was a spit-spilt plot system based on Randomized Complete Blocks Design. Irrigation levels, potassium rates and mulch types were randomly allocated in the main, sub and sub-sub plots, orderly. The obtained results showed that, the amount of irrigation at 80 and/or 100 % ETC was accompanied increases by plant height, leaves number, leaf area and dry weight plant⁻¹, total bulbs yield, individual bulb weight, cloves weight and number bulb-1 compared to irrigation 60 % ETC. The application of potassium from 24 to 48 and further to 72 and 96 kg K₂O fed⁻¹ gave gradual increments in the aforementioned growth and productivity of traits. The rice straw mulch augmented all previous growth, total bulbs yield and its components compared to bare soil. Generally, the 1st order interaction between irrigation percent at 100 and/or 80 % ETC × potassium rate at 96 and/or 72 kg K2O fed⁻¹, irrigation percent at 80 and/or 100 % ETC × rice straw, potassium rate at 96 kg K2O fed⁻¹ × rice straw and the 2nd interaction of irrigation percent at 100 % ETC × potassium rate at 96 kg K₂O fed-1 × rice straw mulch had pronounced effects on morphological characters and bulbs yield and its components compared to other combined treatments.
A comparison between the crop water supply at 6 agrometeorological stations in the former Soviet Union, over 20 years, under natural water supply condition and under soil mulching, has shown a rather low natural crop water supply in the forest-steppe and steppe zones, and that soil mulching tends to increase the crop water supply by about 1.7 times.
A three-year research study (2000–2002) was carried out in a young apple orchard originally founded on typical podzolic soil in 1997. The following methods for treating the soil among the rows of trees were considered: herbicide fallow maintained with glifosat; mulching with black polyethylene foil; mulching with a layer of wheat straw with a thickness of about 15 cm and mechanical fallow maintained by means of mechanical hoeing. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of the various methods applied in treating the soil in the young apple orchard on the content of the mineral nitrogen forms, i.e. N-NH₄⁺ and N-NO₃⁻ within the soil various methods of soil treatment applied in the young apple orchard on the content of mineral nitrogen forms, i.e. N-NH₄⁺ and N-NO₃⁻ in the soil. It was shown that the method of treating the soil was a decisive factor in influencing the content of the mineral nitrogen forms in the soil. The soil maintained as herbicidal or mechanical fallow contained significantly more N-NH₄⁺ and N-NO₃⁻ than did the soil covered with the mulch. The biochemical reactions catalysed by enzymes were, to a high extent, decisive for the content of the mineral nitrogen forms in the soil.
A number of research studies investigating melon production technologies in various macroregions of Poland characterized by different climate conditions have been initiated to investigate the effect of perforated PE film and non-woven PP fabric covers as well as soil mulching with organic and mineral material on the melon growing process. A two-factorial field experiment was conducted in the years 2004–2008, in the Garden of the Research and Experimental Station of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. The first experimental factor were four Polish melon cultivars, Malaga F1, Melba, Oliwin and Seledyn F1, recommended for open ground and forced cultivation. The second factor were types of soil cover and plant cover. Apart from the control treatment (without protective cover), the effect of the following types of cover on the growth rate and yield of melon plants was determined in a five-year cycle: perforated PE film with 100 holes per m2, non-woven PP fabric with surface density of 17 g·m-2, black PE film for soil mulching; black PE film for soil mulching + perforated PE film with 100 holes per m2, black PE film for soil mulching + non-woven PP fabric. An analysis of the chemical composition of melon fruit showed that the concentrations of dry matter, L-ascorbic acid and total carbohydrates were higher in the edible parts of heterotic cultivars. The type of plant cover and soil cover had a significant effect on the dry matter content of the edible parts of melon, but it caused no considerable changes in the levels of the remaining organic compounds. In the majority of cases, the nitrate content of melon fruit was below the allowable standards. The lowest quantities of nitrates were accumulated by melon fruit of cv. Oliwin in the control treatment.
Badania przeprowadzone w latach 2007-2008 objęły pięć taksonów bylin okrywowych: bodziszka Renarda, dąbrówkę Tenora ʻValfredda’, dziurawca rogownicowatego, krwawnika baldaszkowego i lebiodkę gładką ʻRosenkuppel’. Dąbrówka Tenora ʻValfredda’ w pierwszym roku uprawy lepiej rosła w podłożu bez ściółki, a w następnym roku w glebie okrytej korą sosnową.
The use of synthetic materials for mulching is a very common practice for vegetable crops. Soil mulching influences the microclimate around plants and soil environmental conditions. Mulching with black materials is particularly recommended for thermophilic species, especially those requiring high soil temperature. An experimet was established to evaluate an effect of soil mulching with synthetic materials (black polyethylene film, black polypropylene nonwoven 50 g∙m, black fabric 94 g∙m-2) on the fruit quality and nutritive value of two melon cultivars (‘Seledyn’, ‘Yupi’) cultivated in the field under the climatic conditions of central-eastern Poland. The greatest numbers of fruit per 1 m2 and marketable fruit were harvested in the year 2007 which was most favourable for melon growing compared with the remaining study years. The number of the fruits which were either unripe or showed symptoms of decay did not differ significantly in individual study years. ‘Yupi’ was characterised by a significantly higher total number of fruit and number of marketable fruit than ‘Seledyn’. ‘Yupi’ fruits were less affected by decay than ‘Seledyn’ which, however, produced significant less unripe fruit. ‘Yupi’ fruits had significantly more dry matter, total sugars, monosaccharides and vitamin C as compared to ‘Seledyn’. In both the cultivars examined, higher nutrient contents were determined in the fruit grown using black film mulching.
Przeprowadzono badania na 11 odmianach krótkiego ogórka grubobrodawkowego uprawianego w gruncie otwartym w latach 2007-2008. Założono doświadczenie dwuczynnikowe, w którym jednym czynnikiem był mikroklimat, a drugim odmiany. Użyto następujących odmian: Karat F1, Bursztyn F1, Lazuryt F1 i Ametyst F1 hodowli „SPÓJNIA” HiNO w Nochowie, Pold F1 - wzorzec, Pold 86/06 F1, Pold 99/06 F1 i Pold 120/06 F1 hodowli „POLAN” KHiNO w Krakowie oraz GOF 111 F1 i GOF 1405 F1 hodowli „PLANTICO” HiNO w Gołębiewie. Odmianą kontrolną była Pasamonte F1 firmy Syngenta Seeds B.V. Drugim czynnikiem był mikroklimat zmodyfikowany przez agrowłókninę. Użyte odmiany charakteryzowały się dobrym plonowaniem. Zdecydowanie najwyższy średni plon ogólny, handlowy i kl. I uzyskano z odmiany Bursztyn F1, który wynosił odpowiednio: 4,79, 4,06 i 2,89 kg∙m-2. Natomiast najsłabiej plonowały ogórki odmiany Pasamonte F1 i Karat F1, uzyskując średni plon ogólny odpowiednio: 3,34 i 3,33 kg∙m-2.
