During our study we examined 19 most popular Polish potato cultivars. Susceptibility of tubers to bacterial infection was assessed by two methods: direct injection of bacterial suspension into tuber tissue and clay-inoculation method. The cultivars were divided into three groups: tolerant, relatively susceptible and susceptible. Elida, Bila and Vistula proved to be the most susceptible potato cultivars whereas Ekra and Mila the most resistant. Some of the cultivars such as Oda had resistant peel and susceptible tissue. Therefore during storage of Oda-like cultivars healthy and undamaged tubers are so important.
The efficacy of solar heat in the control of bacterial soft rot of potato tubers was investigated in Maiduguri, semi-arid region of Northeastern Nigeria. Artificially contaminated tubers were exposed to solar heat for duration of 0, 30, 60,120 and 180 minutes. The results showed that exposures for 120 and 180 minutes gave the highest control of the disease, although during the hot dry season (mean temperature at exposure was 54.6°C) exposure even for 30 minutes gave satisfactory control of the disease. Solar heat can therefore be used to control of bacterial soft rot of potato tubers.
In the years 2003-2004 the resistance of 40 cultivars potato cultivated under different conditions to late blight, black leg and soft rot was compared. The experiment was performed on 7-week old plants cultivated in the field or from pathogen-free in vitro cultures. The deteched leaves, stem sections and tuber slices were artificially inoculated under laboratory conditions. A significance of differences in sporulation density of Ph. infestans and bacteria Erwinia was observed between groups of potato cultivars. A higher susceptibility of plant tissues and tubers was observed in the material obtained from the field. A significantly lower susceptibility to those pathogens was noted in late potato cultivars and early and mid-early genotypes proved their higher susceptibility.
The occurrence of storage diseases on fruit of seven scab resistant apple cultivars (Freedom, Rajka, Topaz, Rubinola, Enterprise, Goldstar, GoldRush) grafted on M.9 was investigated in 2001-2005. The trees were planted in 1995. It was found that after storage (4 and 6 months at 2°C, 85-90% RH) the most severe appeared to be bull's eye rot (Pezicula spp.). The most sensitive cultivars to this disease were: Topaz, Freedom, Goldstar, the least sensitive were Rubinola, Enterprise, Rajka. Other postharvest diseases like gray mold (Botrytis cinerea), blue mold (Penicillium expansum) and brown rot (Monilinia fructigena) were not common. ‘Rajka’ and ‘Goldstar’ were susceptible to bitter pit, and ‘Freedom’ to superficial scald.
