This study investigated the awareness of and demand for private agricultural extension services among smallscale farmers in Nigeria, using farmers in Oyo state as a case study. Specifically, the study examined the availability and operations of private agricultural extension services and factors that determine farmers’ willingness to pay for such services. The results showed that a considerable number of farmers are willing to pay for private agricultural extension services. The number of plots cultivated by the farmers was found to influence farmers’ willingness to pay for private agricultural extension services at one percent level of significance. Income, awareness, family size and total number of plots were identified as the major factors influencing the use of private agricultural extension services in the study area. The study recommended the need for the government to mobilize farm households to avail themselves of benefits of private extension services. Efforts should also be stepped up by all development stake-holders to provide additional sources of income for farm households, in order to raise their income and demand capabilities.
In Hungary the small farms play an especially important role in the horticultural sector, among others due to the formerly established market garden-farms, their part taken in the employment as well as the high production value per field unit. The main barrier to the development of small farms, enhancement of their size, updating their farming is the marketing difficulties, the lack of a steady absorbing market. In the European Union the vegetable growers are not supported as individuals but through producing and marketing organizations (PMO). In order to exploit the subsidies such organisations turned out in force in the past years, however the wholesaler concentration and the urge of expanding because of the change of marketing channels presents a further challenge for the farmers. In my study I am going to examine the changes having occurred in the product line, the extent of vertical coordination, the further opportunities for integration of farmers and their organisations on the basis of Hungarian experiences, own questionnaire surveys and personal consultations.
There is an increasing consensus that diversifying into the cultivation of ‘Neglected and Underutilized Species’ (NUS), in addition to growing conventional crops, offers a plethora of livelihood-enhancing benefi ts to small-scale agricultural households. Therefore this study examined the factors that influence small-scale farmers’ diversifi cation into the cultivation of the cashew nut plant (Anarcadium occidentale, Moringa oleifera and Jatropha curcas) in the guinea savannah region of Nigeria. We employed farm household-level survey data of the phenomenon in Kwara State. The data were analyzed using the Simson Index of Diversity (SID) and Tobit censored regression. Findings indicate that respondents diversified most into the cultivation of cashews (70.9%), followed by moringa (38.4%), and jatropha (11.3%). The extent of diversifi cation was positively infl uenced by the farm size (p < 0.01), household head’s education level (p < 0.01), membership in a cooperative (p < 0.01), and farm income (p < 0.1). It was negatively infl uenced by the land tenure system practiced (p < 0.05). Findings imply, inter alia, that small-scale farmers may avoid diversifi cation into these crops if they have a limited access to cultivated land. This study therefore advocates ensuring equitable access to farmland through a structural and legislative land tenure reform policy.
