Propagation of juniper from cuttings is the primary method used in the nursery. Process of rhizogenesis in these plants is long and not always allows to obtain a good quality of rooted cuttings. In the experiment there was investigated the effect of laser light doses (semiconductor laser, model CTL 1106MX, power 200 mW, wave length 670 μm) and the footing agent AB on percentage of rooted cuttings, plants height, length and the number of roots. The examined juniper taxa proved diverse response to the variants applied (combination of laser radiation and the rooting agent AB). The increase in the number of rooted cuttings after application of the rooting agent AB, as well as three times introduced irradiation in Eastern redcedar ‘Blue Arrow’. This form also produced longer roots for the variant combining twelve times applied irradiation and the effect of rooting agent. In the cuttings of Chinese juniper ‘Stricta’, exposed to laser radiation in six – (D6) and twelve times applied doses (D12), there was observed significant stimulation of root length. Introduced treatment variants of shoot cuttings of Common juniper ‘Schneverdinger Goldmachangel’ brought about considerable root elongation (except for D3 dose). The dose providing for significant increase in the percentage of rooted cuttings in all the examined juniper varieties proved to be D3 dose.
This paper presents the structure of developmental stages and the age structure of Convallaria majalis L. populations. The investigation material consisted of individuals and modules from populations in Betulo-Quercetum, Fago-Quercetum, Melico-Fagetum and Tilio-Carpinetum, in which the leaves and inflorescence of C. majalis were cut annually over a period of three years. Fifty percent of the C. majalis regional population consisted of mature modules, 20% of juvenile modules, 25% of senile modules and a very small percentage of generative modules. In populations of Fago-Quercetum there are four times more senile modules than juvenile modules, while in Melico-Fagetum the percentage of juvenile modules is four times more numerous than the percentage of senile modules. The average age of modules is 4.7±3.8 years. Three year old individuals dominate in the population, while 10 year or older individuals are very rare. In the population disturbed by the three raw material collections, the percentage of juvenile modules was decreased by 50% and the percentage of generative modules was nonexistent. As a result, the average module age is higher than in the undisturbed population. Cutting leaves and inflorescence is an important factor in limiting the recruitment of juvenile modules. The growth of individuals in the disturbed population occurs among older modules, which were able to reproduce before the disturbance occurred. Young individuals (three to four years old) are less numerous in the disturbed population, and the majority of individuals are three to six years old.
This study examined the effects of different exogenous auxins and cytokinins at 0.1-5.0 mg·l-1 concentration on shoot cuttings of two H. perforatum clones transformed with a wild agropine strain of A. rhizogenes and one untransformed clone. Their sensitivity to the auxins varied and showed concentration-dependent behavior, and the response to auxins differed between the transgenic clones. The number of cuttings of transgenic clones capable of root formation, and the onset of rooting on most of the media with auxins lagged behind the control. The number of differentiated shoots of the transgenic clones on hormone-free medium was two to three times higher than that of the untransformed control. Regenerated shoots of the transgenic clones on basal medium branched much less than the nontransgenic clone. The transgenic and control clones differed in their ability to form shoots on media supplemented with cytokinins. Increased cytokinins led to differentiation of shorter shoots with fewer leaf pairs. Because gene expression studies have shown integration of rolABC genes, their possible impact on the type of morphogenetic response is discussed.
Flowering and fruit setting was analyzed in specimens of Chamedaphne calyculata (L.) Moench growing in a natural stand in the “Sicienko” reserve in the Drawa National Park. Seed production, seed viability and shoot rooting was investigated. It was shown that Chamaedaphne calyculata has abundant flowers but sets few fruits. Numerous seeds (even up to 87) were found in fruits; however, the percentage of developed seeds was low and ranged from 17% to 45%. The viability of developed seeds was similarly low (maximum 29%). The performed germination test showed a positive effect of stratification on the breaking of seed dormancy. Obtaining seedlings from seeds sown in vitro on agar medium was a considerable success. Shoots cut perpendicularly to the shoot axis, with a 1-cm incision on the side and treated with a rooting agent, rooted 100%. Shoots which were not treated with a rooting agent, irrespective of their having been incised or not, rooted 78%.
