The assessment of black cherry seedlings root system was carried out at the Didactic-Experimental Establishment of the UWM in Olsztyn in September 2002. The seeds from which the examined seedlings were obtained had been sown into the ground on 2 October 2001. The following seeds were used for the experiment: fresh, sown into the ground immediately after obtaining them from fruit, partly dried seeds and seed sown a month later than in the preceding case as well as physiologically immature seeds and whole fresh fruit. The root systems of seedlings obtained from seeds stored for 1 year and 2 years in open and closed “Twist” type jars at room temperature and in a freezer were also assessed. The largest proportions of seedlings were obtained from seeds stored for 1 year and 2 years in a freezer. The lowest proportions of seedlings were obtained from seeds sown a month later and from whole fresh fruit. In this experiment the most favorable development of the root system was observed in case of seedlings from seeds stored for 2 years in an open jar. The time from picking to sowing of seeds was of little importance. The seedlings from partly dried seeds and later sowing were characterized by the lowest mass of the root system.
Soybean cultivation is becoming more and more popular in many countries, including Poland, due to the high nutritional value of its seeds, its resistance to diseases and pests, as well as lower propensity to lodging compared to other legumes. Under the climatic conditions of Poland, soybean yield is largely dependent on weather conditions in a particular growing season, primarily temperature and rainfall. Studies on the effect of tillage systems used for soybean cropping under the climatic conditions of Poland are scarce. This proves the need to continue such research. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) on yield, weed infestation and seed qualitative composition of the ‘Mazowia’ soybean cultivar grown under the conditions of the Lublin Upland. A field experiment was carried out in the period of 2009-2012 at the Czesławice Experimental Farm (51°18′23″N 22°16′2″E). In 2010 the soybean plantation was terminated due to adverse weather conditions and related inhibited plant emergence. The experiment was set up on loess-derived grey-brown podzolic soil as a split-block design in four replicates. The present study showed that the soybean seed yield obtained under conventional tillage conditions was higher by 14.6% compared to that obtained under no-tillage. A higher plant density after emergence and before harvest as well as a higher plant height were found in the conventional tillage treatment. The protein, oil and fibre content in soybean seed was significantly affected only by weather conditions in particular growing seasons. A higher weed weight and richer floristic composition of weeds were found under no-tillage conditions in relation to conventional tillage.
Rice seeds collected from Sarocladium oryzae inoculated plants produced more discoloured grain, chaffiness and recorded much lower seed germination than seeds collected from healthy plants in all the three cultivars tested. The germination, chaffiness and discolouration in healthy plants were found to be in the range of 70.50 to 93.50 per cent, 5.5 to 17.75 per cent and 4 to 18 per cent respectively. There was a progressive and significant reduction in total sugar, reducing sugar and non reducing sugar content of rice seeds with varying degree of seed infection caused by S. oryzae The increase in phenol content due to S. oryzae infection ranged from 15.74 to 70.78 per cent and increase being proportional to the per cent S. oryzae seed infection.
This study was carried out to determine the effects of packaging materials and storage periods on seed quality and longevity dynamics of an endangered tropical tree species, Pericopsis elata. The experimental period was December, 2015 to June, 2016. Seed collection was done at the Bobiri Forest Reserve. The seed storage experiment was set up using 3 x 6 factorial arrangements in Completely Randomized Design with three replications. Six packaging materials (jute, nylon, paper, ziplock bag, airtight bottle and no packaging) and three storage periods (no storage, three months storage and six months storage) were used. Germination percentage, seed vigour, 1000 seed weight, moisture content, carbohydrate, protein and oil contents were assessed before storage, three months and six months after storage. P. elata seeds with initial moisture content of 7.5% and packaged in airtight bottle and ziplock bags maintained their moisture contents even as storage periods increased. The initial amounts of seed carbohydrates (1.9%), proteins (37.4%) and oil (31.3%) were maintained in the airtight packaging materials (bottle and ziplock bag) thereby improving seed storability. The seed viability equation predicted that P. elata seeds could be stored for 243 years after six months of storage. Seed viability dropped to 164 days after the accelerated aging test was performed on the six-months old stored seeds. The study concluded that the seeds of this important endangered tree can be stored in airtight containers before the next planting season without any loss in seed quality.

The use of high quality sowing material is the fundamental condition for good yielding of crop plants. One of new, unconventional methods of seed quality improvement is low-frequency variable magnetic field. It has been found that this physical factor has a favourable effect on seed germination, emergence and growth of many crop plants. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of low-frequency magnetic field (LFMF) on the germination of radish seeds, with particular emphasis on old seeds. The experimental material were seeds of 7 lots of radish cv. ‘Mila’, with germination capacity of 66.5–92.5%. The age of the seeds was from 1 to 8 years. Seeds from all the lots were treated with variable magnetic field with frequency of 50 Hz, at 3 doses of magnetic induction as follows: 0 (control), 30 and 60 mT for 30 seconds. Then, the seed germination energy and capacity were determined, as well as the length of the hypocotyl and of the radicle of the seedling, dry weight of seedling, and emergence and mean time of emergence. The low frequency magnetic field exposure (30 and 60 mT) improved radish seed germination energy and capacity of every old seed lot. The increase of germination energy of old seeds amounted to 12.3–19.2%, and the increase of germination capacity was 5.8–10%. Magnetic field stimulation caused the increase of germination energy for 3 out of 4 seed lots of high quality but did not affect the improvement of germination capacity of those lots. No significant effect of magnetic field of seeds on the hypocotyl and radicle elongation was observed with the exception of 1 out of the 7 seed lots. For the 2 old seed lots out of the 3 total, magnetic field treatment caused the increase of emergence by 4.4–13.0%.

Proposal for a seed certification scheme

Identity of reproductive material is essential in artificial forest regeneration. Legal regulations cannot guarantee proof of identity. State and private organizations have been cooperating to develop a seed certification scheme in forestry. Representative samples of forest reproductive material are taken at any production stage starting at the time of seed collection through to plant delivery as well as at time of changing ownership. The first sample at the time of seed harvest is used to determine the maximum potential yield of living germinants from the total collection. Furhtermore this and the other samples are tested randomly at a determined level of intensity or in case of doubt by Isozyme/DNA methods. Sampling techniques have been tested and described in a handbook. The biochemical-genetic tests are being standardized for all major commercial species. Forest reproductive material having been sampled in the described way will be certified "of provable identity" by a neutral agency. The Scheme will be open to anyone complying with the rules laid down. Larger forest owners have confirmed to preferably purchase "forest plants of provable identity".
Among seed-transmitted cereal viruses the most important is Barley stripe mosaic virus (BSMV), infecting barley. Investigations on the occurrence of BSMV in Poland have been carried out in the Institute of Plant Protection in Poznań since 2000. The studies aimed at the evaluation of the BSMV distribution in plant material, the rate of its seed transmission in different barley cultivars and the assessment of the effect of barley infection on the yield. The potential risk of BSMV occurrence for barley crops was discussed. The rate of infection by two seed-transmitted viruses, Maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV) and Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV), in Poland was investigated in view of the risk assessment.
Microelements play an important role in the production of horticultural plant seeds. A great attention was devoted to titanium, which according to the literature, accelerates germination of pollen grain, thereby increasing the yield of fruit and seeds as well as improves the health status and quality of seeds. The research was carried out to determine the effect of Tytanit containing 0.85% of titanium applied at different stages of onion plant development on the yield and quality of the obtained seeds. The research was conducted in 2003-2005 in the field of Research Institute of Vegetable Crops and Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture. The experiments were designed in three randomized blocks, in three repetitions and with three onion cultivars: Sochaczewska, Supra and Błońska. Tytanit was applied before sowing (during seed soaking) or during vegetation period as a foliar spray from the beginning of flowering till the seed harvest at the concentration of 0.04% - 600 dm3 water∙ha-1. The treatments were performed at three different stages of plant development, every 7-10 days. Independently of the stage of plant development, the application of Tytanit significantly increased the yield of onion seeds of all the examined cultivars. The highest onion seed yield was obtained after spraying plants with this chemical during full flowering. Similarly, foliar application of Tytanit during full flowering of onion plants significantly improved the quality of seeds. This chemical also significantly increased the weight of 1000 seeds as well as their germination in all the examined cultivars in comparison with the control. The onion seeds obtained after the application of Tytanit during full flowering are characterized by better health status.
The “second generation” of glyphosate-tolerant soybean (GT2 soybean) was developed through a different technique of insertion of the glyphosate-insensitive EPSPs gene, in comparison with “first generation” of glyphosate-tolerant soybean. However, there is not enough information available about glyphosate selectivity in GT2 soybean and the effects on the quality of seeds produced. The aim of this study was to evaluate tolerance to glyphosate and seed quality of soybean cultivar NS 6700 IPRO (GT2) with cp4-EPSPs and cry1Ac genes, after application at post-emergence (V4). The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with four replicates and seven treatments, or rates of glyphosate (0; 720; 1,440; 2,160; 2,880; 3,600; 4,320 g of acid equivalent − a.e. · ha−1). Assessments were performed for crop injury, SPAD index and variables related to agronomic performance and seed quality. A complementary trial with the same cultivar and treatments in a greenhouse was conducted in a completely randomized design with four replications. Data analysis indicated no significant effect of glyphosate on V4 on agronomic performance and physiological quality of seeds, for two growing seasons. The soybean cultivar NS 6700 IPRO (GT2), with cp4-EPSPs and cry1Ac genes, was tolerant to glyphosate up to the maximum rate applied (4,320 g a.e. · ha−1) at post-emergence (V4). The quality of soybean seeds was not affected by glyphosate up to the maximum rate applied (4,320 g a.e. · ha−1) at post-emergence (V4).
