Chenopodium album.
The fight against weeds in the organic cultivation of herbal plants, both raw and for seeds, is a big challenge for growers. The paper compares the chemical (bentazon, 960 g·ha–1 and fluazifop-P-butyl, 150 g·ha–1) and nonchemical (scattering mustard seed meal in two doses 1.5 and 3.0 t·ha–1) control of weeds in the cultivation of lemon balm for seeds. Additionally, the influence of these factors on the yield of fresh herb and seeds of lemon balm and the sowing value of seeds was evaluated. The best method to control the weed infestation was to use mustard seed meal in an amount of 3.0 t∙ha–1. Scattering of mustard seed meal in that dose reduced the number and weight of weeds on average from two years of research by 52.1 and 60.2% in relation to unweeded control. Following methods were slightly less effective: bentazon and application of mustard seed meal in quantity of 1.5 t·ha–1. The largest yield of fresh lemon balm herb was collected from plots where mustard seed meal was used in an amount of 3.0 t∙ha–1. Seeds harvested from plots, on which mustard seed meal was used in a larger quantity was characterized by the lowest sowing value determined by the lowest energy and capacity of germination and the highest share of nongerminated seeds. Lowering the amount of used mustard seed meal to 1.5 t·ha–1 significantly improved their sowing value. Although this method was less effective in counteracting weeds than using larger dose, it provided comparable effects of reducing the number and weight of weeds in relation to chemical protection.
Samples of plants of red clover cv. Dajana were collected from a strict field experi-ment carried out in 2005-2006. Two factors were considered: 1. Seeds originating from plantation of red clover, foliar fed with boron and molybdenum at the following rates: 0; B – 0.3; Mo – 0.01; B – 0.3 + Mo – 0.01; B – 0.45; Mo – 0.015; B – 0.45 + Mo – 0.015 kg ha-1; 2. Two cuts of red clover. A con-sequential impact of feeding the seed red clover with boron and molybdenum was observed; it consid-erably diversified the contents of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, specific protein, crude fibre, NDF, ADF, and micro-elements (B, Cu, Mn, Mo) in the plants. Better effects were most often recorded for seeds fed at the following rates: B – 0.45; Mo – 0.015, and B – 0.45 + Mo – 0.015 kg ha-1. Great variability of above components and zinc in the plants resulted from the weather during particular seasons. From the point of view of red clover as a fodder, better results were noted for plants from 2006 and from the 2nd cut.
Effects of heavy seed crop (mainly oak mast) in year 2003 and 2004 (no seed crops) on small mammal communities in three isolated stands of broad leaved lowland forests (area 60–280 ha) with different management were studied in southern Moravia in three sites: (1) close-to-nature not managed floodplain forest – Ulmeto–Fraxinetum carpineum (FF), (2) managed forest – Carpineto-Quercetum acerosum (MF), (3) pheasantry – Ulmeto-Fraxinetum carpineum, Saliceto- Alnetum and Carpineto-Quercetum acerosum, with a considerable number of biotopes including open areas (PH). We presumed the influence of seed production on mammal species, especially granivorous rodents. In the most numerous species (Apodemus flavicollis (Mel.), A. sylvaticus (L.) and Myodes glareolus (Pallas)) the demographic parameters (abundance, sex ratio), body mass, and body length were compared between populations in 2003 and 2004 in each stand. Animals were trapped in snap mousetraps laid out in lines. In 2003 reproduction of both Apodemus sp. Was extended to November in contrast to 2004, when it ceased already in the end of summer. Individual body mass of animals were significantly higher in 2004 vs. 2003 in all three species (A. flavicollis, P = 0.01; A. sylvaticus, P <0.01 and Myodes glareolus, P <0.05) but body length was higher only in case of A. sylvaticus (P <0.01). The forest stands under study in an intensively managed agroecosystem in southern Moravia play an important role as a refuge for small mammals.
