This study analysed the rearing of Black Molly Poecilia hybrids. It is a crossbreed of sailfin molly Poecilia latipinna and short-finned molly Poecilia sphenops. Black mollies are very popular aquarium fish which are frequently put into marine aquaria to speed up the maturation of such aquaria. Without being acclimatised to high salinity, the fish are put into water with a salinity of SG 1.025 or 33 ‰. The results indicate that fish which are shorter than 20 mm die in water whose salinity is higher than SG 1.020. However, fish longer than 25 mm can adapt to higher salinity. The results indicate that fish which have been reared in water of higher salinity grow faster.

Global climate changes which has been observed over the recent years affects organisms occurring in the Arctic seas and the functioning of the whole maritime ecosystems there. The research note presents and briefly analyses the biological diversity of the Arctic Ocean and the most important factors which change the relations between organisms and the environment in the Arctic.

Between May and October of 2003, mineral composition of surface (0.5 m deep) and bottom (5.0 meters) waters, at measurement stations in north-western and south-eastern parts of Great Lagoon (Szczecin Lagoon), have been studied. Total concentrations of ionic macrocomponents: Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, HCO3 - , SO4 2- have been determined. Differentiation of ionic composition and changing level of concentrations of ionic macrocomponents in waters, depending on location of measurement station, depth of water sample collection and time of examination, have been proved. Bottom waters in south-eastern part of Great Lagoon had highest salinity level, whereas surface waters in the same location had lowest degree of salinity. Taking into consideration relatively small number of measurements, authors of present paper regard outlined investigations as diagnostic and obtained conclusions as preliminary ones. Towards substantial variability in ionic composition and magnitudes of concentrations, it is practically impossible to forecast and define values of concentrations of individual ionic components and general salinity degrees, basing on chlorides concentrations, what was often pursued, until now.
In Andes Mountains (14–27°S) and Patagonian plains (45–53°S) in Chile, there are numerous shallow saline and sub-saline lakes. These water bodies have important temporal and spatial variation of their salinity caused by mineral composition of their watershed or exposition to arid weather. In this study we compared the salinity level and the occurrence of centropagid copepods (Crustacea, Copepoda, Calanoida) in water bodies of both regions. In the Andes Mts the calanoids inhabit water bodies of salinity lower than 90 g l⁻¹, and the representative species was Boeckella poopoensis (Marsh 1906), that occurs between 5.0 to 90.0 g l⁻¹. In Patagonian plains, the copepods occur at salinity level between 0.1 to 16.0 g l⁻¹, and within these values most frequent are B. popei (Mrázek 1901) and Parabroteas sarsi (Mrázek 1901). Both species can coexist with other calanoid species.

Estuaries of the Polish Baltic coastal zone

61%
Estuaries are dynamic ecosystems characterized by great and constant variability of physicochemical gradients and biological parameters. Considerable fluctuations in salinity levels, temperature, pH, concentrations of oxygen, nutrients and organic matter are quite natural in such water bodies. There are many estuarine forms at the Polish Baltic Coast, including open-sea gulfs (the Gulf of Gdansk and the Pomeranian Gulf), water bodies connected to the Baltic Sea (Lake Łebsko) and periodically closed water bodies connected to the Baltic Sea by channels or through river-mouths (Lake Jamno and Lake Gardno). The mouths of large rivers, like Odra and Vistula, also show features of estuaries. Estuaries perform a very important function of specific natural filters for a variety of chemical compounds contained in waters flowing through this area. In this way they form an effective buffer zone that prevents the penetration of toxic biological substances into seawater.
