Background. The study aimed to evaluate the scope and level of rural residents’ knowledge on the prevention of Lyme borreliosis and how this knowledge is used by residents of some selected rural areas of Lublin Province. Material and methods. A survey methodology was conducted with a sample of respondents of the Firlej and Kock communes (Lubartów County) and Borki commune (Radzyń Podlaski County). The study group involved 100 rural residents aged 18-67 years (mean 43; SD 0.14). Results. Among rural residents participating in the study, 35% are engaged in agriculture, and 61% have backyard gardens. 14% of the respondents have experienced a single tick bite, while 26% multiple bites. Out of those respondents who have experienced tick bites, only 12.5% have undergone diagnostic tests for the presence of Lyme borreliosis. The reported bite sites were found mostly in the lower limb (55%), stomach (40%), upper limb (30%), and the observed symptoms included first of all: muscle pain (50%), headache (37.5%), impaired concentration (20%), fever (17.5%), bone and joint pain (12.5%). A total of 30% farmers and rural residents consider their knowledge on the prevention of tick-borne diseases as minimal. Conclusions. It is necessary to undertake educational activities that would not only contribute to an increase in the level of knowledge of countryside residents on the prevention of tick-borne diseases but also lead to taking appropriate measures when bites occur.
In a knowledge-based economy, innovativeness is a quality desired on the labour market. It may increase young people’s employment opportunities. The article discusses the issue of young rural residents’ attitudes towards their own innovativeness. It presents the results of sociological research carried out in 2014–2015 in Łódzkie voivodeship among upper secondary school students from rural areas. Three components of the innovative attitude were analysed: cognitive, emotional/evaluative, and behavioral. The study was carried out using a case study method and an auditorium survey involving a total number of 209 people. On the basis of the study, conclusions were made referring to weak points of young rural residents’ attitude to their own innovativeness, and it was demonstrated that relatively few of them display an innovative attitude.
This article investigates factors influencing knowledge of renewable energy types among 200 residents of 13 villages in Lubelskie province using survey data collected in 2013. Survey summary responses indicate that solar and wind energy were best known and biofuels the least known among five energy types considered in the questionnaire. Factors associated with varying degrees of renewable energy sources were identified using the multivariate ordered probit approach. The largest change in probability that a respondent’s self-assessed knowledge level fell into a specific category was associated with being a farmer, viewing the subject matter of the survey as important, having high income, being from a large household and, being married.

Entrepreneurship of rural residents in Poland

The transformations that occur in rural areas are intended to increase the diversity of the countryside by extending the previously performed functions, both economic and social. This increases the importance of entrepreneurship among rural residents to cope with quite diffi cult facts, which had an undeniable impact on the quality of life. The aim of the study is to evaluate the entrepreneurship of the rural residents in comparison with living in cities. We have taken into account as the entrepreneurial attitudes as entrepreneurial actions. The important area of the analysis was the assessment of the relationship between these two aspects of entrepreneurship. The conducted studies have shown, that the entrepreneurial potential of the rural population in Poland is relatively high. In these terms, from the point of view of both the entrepreneurial attitudes and actions, residents of the rural areas are not falling behind the residents of cities. At the same time, entrepreneurial activities undertaken by them, remain in relation to their entrepreneurial attitude.
This study identifies respondent characteristics influencing the opinion of Polish residents regarding the euro. Using data collected from 200 residents of Łuków and Biała Podlaska districts in Lubelskie Province, a decision model was specified where the choice of opinion about the euro was determined by demographic and socio-economic characteristics, household size, and location. Results show that the largest change in probability of choosing the opinion that the euro would strengthen in the future resulted from an increase in income and number of children in a household, but the probability would decrease, although by a small amount, if a respondent resided in a rural area or was fully employed.
